Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Here is my list of econo-nags...

Robbie - 800.00 back in 1986. He was older and had horrible conformation. He made up for it with his heart. He was a total babysitter. I rode that horse everywhere. We went swimming together, had ice cream and so on. He took me to my first show and won me my first blue ribbon. He had to be put down due to colic.

Joe - 3500. That was a lot for us. He was my show horse. He taught me how to ride, and gave me the good seat. I fell off him MANY times because of goofing around. Once we got past the bumps & bruises things went better.

Ashton - 4000. He was a mess. No one could ride him at all. On the ground he was a dollbaby, and anyone could handle him. Undersaddle was a whole different story. First time I did a sitting trot on him he ran like heck. SO we started slowly building up so that I could do a sitting trot and not die. I gave him away because of his issues with the canter. HE needed a rider that would just let him gallop and learn that it is ok. He is now a fox hunter and is very happy.

Red..not really a econonag. He was 6500.00 but is a peach. He is my adult-Robbie. WAY better confirmation though. He is a challenge and doesn't give me the results unless I ask correctly. Near the end of the season last year we were placing in the top 3 placings in our classes. With Ashton, if I got 6th and stayed on that was a good ride.

I might upgrade when I max out with Red, or I may keep him and let him be a pasture puff. You know being trail ridden occasionally but other than that eating.

A relative bought my current horse when she was 6 months old from the breeder for $160 (they didn't want her because she was "too small"). She sat in a pasture for a few years, was very lightly started, determined to have a good mind, and said relative sold her to me for the princely sum of $500. I made up for that, though, with the cost of shipping her halfway across the country. For some reason I just had to have that particular filly, even though there is no shortage of green breeding stock paint mares of unremarkable heritage and mostly-decent-but-not-fabulous conformation in my neck of the woods

                what a great thread.

My mare was a $600 blue light special due to lack of the required 2" white spot. Outstanding breeding and a gorgeous mare. She's my Keeper. http://themares.blogspot.com/2009/01...-holidays.html

All of mine have been Econo-Nags! they've all been low four figures, but I'm hoping to work my way down to 3 or maybe free .
                    Pony 1: $1400, resold 32 days later for $5500.
Pony 2: $1400, resold 9 months later for $9000. Went from horrible hideous ewe-necked goat-thing to kick-a** eventer and PC pony. Off winning ribbons in Louisiana.
Pony 3: $1400 (see a trend here?), sold 2 months later for $4000 to my barn owner. I got him as a basically unbroke 5 year old; he dumped me in a mud puddle when I tried him. Owners said he was "wild!!". Got him off the trailer at home and he's been half asleep ever since. Will event, puts in a decent 1st level dressage test, working on 2nd, can hunter around a course and win, and teaches enough lessons to absolute beginners every month to pay his own upkeep plus two other horses. total gem.

                    Cheaper is better

Well I got my boy b/c he was more problem nagish, making him even harder to sell in the economy .. so i guess she classifies! I paid a whopping 1100 for him which was pretty significantly cheaper than his price tag. he was my blue light special

I will have had him for a full year on the 13th! (OH MY LANTA! I cannot believe it has been a year already!)

his first day home (ignore the fact that all his hair was stolen)

then I have pony.. he was free (donation) .. he now is broke to ride and drive. and is just turning into an AWESOME little man! too bad for everyone else, b/c I am never ever gona get rid of the little bugger!

and I almost just took on a GORGEOUS TB mare from Florida. 17hh, dappled gray mare. she had an attitude, but nothing too bad. She would have been free (just shipping costs), but I had the sense knocked into me that I did not need another baby! Thankfully she found a fab home in Georgia ;]

My childhood horse was the ultimate econo-nag! 11 months after an "oops" with a neighboring ranch owner's QH stud, my mom found her in the pasture next to her mare. She was born when I was 4, I think I was about 7 or 8 in this photo, and I had her until she was 20.

I don't think I have personally ever paid more than $525 for a horse. I have paid more when going in with someone else (re-sale project) but the MAX I have ever paid with anyone was $1300.

Right now I have a pony I paid $250 for (she was my first). I bought her off a guy as she was being loaded to go for slaughter. She is broke, but not that well. I have an appaloosa gelding I got for free as a yearling, two adorable ponies for my kids I paid $400 each for! You couldn't ask for nicer kids ponies! Even I take pleasure in riding them. I also have a really cute shetland/welsh gelding who is broke to drive. I got him for $300. I also have a nice green broke mustang that someone gave me. Two foals that were born here....I bought their moms bred with foals at side for $1000 so I pretend I paid $333 for each horse. Makes sense to me.
                            My horses past and present....

I have had several Econo-Nags ranging in price from negative $500 to less then $2000. None of them went on to beat out their more expensive cousins, but who all are great horses in their own way.

Loved the thread so much I changed my signature line!

Our first Econo-nag was a wormy, skinny, almost hairless 10 year old OTTB mare. I bought her for $1200 because she looked me in the eye and begged me to take her home. She didn't have the best conformation and was not a fancy mover but she was honest and kind and loved her kid. 3 years after we bought her I had someone wanting to buy her for their kid for $15k. Didn't sell and she's currently fat, happy and retired in our pasture. Love that horse!

Our current Econo-nag is an extremely talented but mercurial girl. Got her in trade for a dead broke trail gelding when she was 10 months old. Considering she tried to kill herself multiple times until age 3, I think she went from Econo-nag to gigantic investment!
A horse may be coaxed to drink, but a pencil must be lead.

No Super Discount Econo-Nags in my life
But I did bar-gain for them all

                                    In 1989 Vern was $4500 -asking price $6K - 2 years after I bought him I was offered $45K
Probably should have taken it, today I could maybe get $450 for him
Not to worry - he has a Forever Home here

Buddy - aka Steppin' Out - was $1800
Same price previous owner paid plus $200 for her travel expenses to get him from Alabama (she showed me receipts for gas)
What he gave my husband in their 8 years together was truly priceless

Cash was listed for about 4 times what I paid - still very low 4 figures
Owner wanted him to have a good home
                                    He does

The most expensive econo nag I every had was 1200$ the cheapest one was a freebie that cost 300$ to haul home.

Im currently looking at a 'nice' econo nag who the sellers have mentioned that if they could get 75$ for him as long as he goes to a good home that is all that counts.

                                        In love with my econo-nag

                                        LOVE this thread!!!
I paid $3000 for mine... could have paid $500 without papers but Ms. Maya is Irish bred and I figured we could make a nice broodmare out of her if all else failed. Bought her horrible looking... grew from 15.3 hands as a 3 year old to 16.2 as a 5 year old and is the love of my life...
Has attempted to kill herself quite TOO many times... but has been "sane" (in that aspect) for the last two years..
Considering the fact that she requires to shod all around (every 4-5 weeks max as her feet grow faster than weeds) and has to see the chiropractor twice a month... if I was to do the math... Probably would be close to $80,000 in the whole... if not more really (over the past 6 years)
Was offered $45,000 when she was 6 but decided against it... she's my forever long project and has taught me more than I could ask for!!!
                                        Love that horse
Proudly living in my "let's save the world bubble"!

I've pretty much always had econo-nags...

First horse -- Dolly -- grey OTTB mare, paid a huge $5000 for her. She was amazing. Won a ton on her, trusted her with my life, retired to be a broodmare and make beautiful hunter babies.

Sha Samour, aka Sam, the little Arab pleasure horse that could do anything -- had him on a free lease for 5 years before I finally was able to buy him, for pennies. Had him until he was 30, and I miss him every day. I think it's safe to say he was the winningest hunter pleasure horse on the regular show circuit in NJ ever.

Paladin, Appendix QH gelding, who I had on loan from some friends for many years, so he was a freebie. Won a ton on him, and could trust him to cart my husband around on the trails safely.

Then about a year and a half ago, I spent a "fortune" on my horse of a lifetime. Low 4-figures... for a 15-year-old Oldenburg schoolmaster. Been-there-done-that hunter, with miles in Florida and the big A circuit. His name was Kadanz. He was a very special boy. And unfortunately, he died suddenly in October.

Which brings me to Miss Dimples, my current econo-nag, who my trainer gave to me as a "warranty replacement" for Kadanz. She's a lovely 16-year-old Oldenburg mare who had spent the last 11 or so years just hanging out in the pasture. So she was basically green-broke. After 5 months of starting-from-scratch work, we're now going great on the flat and jumping 2'-2'3" single jumps, and starting to canter lines. She's awesome. And she has the sweetest disposition and is so happy to have a job and a person to call her own.

I now need to change my signature line...
Why do I like most horses better than most people?
