Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

My "econo-nag" (I l-o-v-e that phrase!) was a freebie. Once a 45K World Champion halter horse, he hit 5 he was "over the hill". Passed around and never properly started under saddle he was destined for "Belgium roast" because he was a behavior problem, then I offered him a home. I was going to retrain him and sell him! Until I saw him in my side view mirror as I was backing my trailer up to his barn door. One look and I was g-o-n-e! He is my boy now & forever! A truer gift from God I have never known! He is a brilliant competitor and a stunning bit of eye candy. Scopey and true to boot!

My girl was in the mid 4 figures, and worth 10 times that to me. I had just begun riding again, and last November told my trainer I was going to horse shop "in the spring." A few weeks later, she asked me to ride her b/c her owner was putting her up for sale. I jumped her through a grid, put DD on her and she trotted along, so I bought her. Now, she's got a forever home.

Gee, I guess I have to confess to an entire stable of econonags. Just did the math, I've owned 9 horses dating back to 1965, total outlay 10,850. Low, two freebies, high, $4k and I turned down 5 figures for that one more than once.

Very fun to take a $200 mare and a $700 gelding and beat professionals on high priced horses in western pleasure, way back when. Or beat rich kids on pricey horses with high tone trainers.

Actually the little girl who got DD's first pony got a bargain too. She bought a $1,200 custom saddle for $400 and I threw in the pony it was made for.

Yeah... only horse I ever really hated, LOL.

I own one and have probably ridden the ULTIMATE E-N

My mare I bred myself, was given an Appendix Mare that wouldn't stay sound, and used a free breeding I had coming to produce my level 3-4 horse. BTW the Stallion was a Canadian Papered Hanno.

The Ultimate E-C I have ridden was BAO owned by Gwen Stockebrand, she paid $350 for him as an event horse, he was a Morgan Walker cross, so looked like a warmblood, was too slow in the cross country, went pure Dressage and went to the Olympics in 1980 and got 17th IIRC.

I'm not sure if my guys qualify- around here they definitely do Anyway, the big guy has proven his worth many times over, with his heart and his attitude. The little guy- well, let's just say that I paid by the pound for ponytude, and he's not even a pony! But he's still much loved

My econo-nag is a 5-year old OTTB that cost me all of $300 for the adoption fee. He was a rack of bones and handlebars for hips the first day I met him, and we didn't know anything about him except that he was supposedly broke. He had a super-kind eye though, and it was love at first sight for me.

Six months and lots of groceries later, he's proven to be worth his weight in gold as far as I'm concerned... he's a total pocket pony, sensible far beyond his years, and he just loves everything and everyone he meets. We trail-ride at least once a week, and we're schooling 2" courses in the ring. So far we've entered 3 schooling shows (W/T, W/T/C, and O/F 12-18" classes) and he hasn't placed lower than third; our last show, we got 2 firsts and a second.

He's just a gem, no two ways about it; I can't believe how lucky I am to be his "Mom."

here he is the first day I met him, 6 months ago: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

Here he is about 3 months later: http://lh6.ggpht.com/__IeXPR0qt0E/SP...0/DSC01649.JPG

He looks even better now, but I'm waiting until he's done blowing his hair before I get more photos... but here's one of my favorite pics of him: http://lh3.ggpht.com/__IeXPR0qt0E/SP...2/DSC01647.JPG

My econo-nag was in the low 4-figures, skinny, out of shape, and a horrible cribber. Now, a year and a half later, she's still a cribber, has added plenty of groceries, is back in training and in shape, winning blue ribbons, and to me she's worth a million bucks.

all 4 of my current horses are econo-nags. 3 were three figure horses the other was four figures.

the four figure horse is my QH gelding and i don't know if i overpayed or not but i think he was worth it...he's my everything and i love to pieces! he's very smart and kind and gentle and does whatever i ask and goes where ever i point his nose without hesitation. he is a lifer. he was $1,200 but worth more then anyone could ever spend now

the mare was bought for $200 and she was in foal she a good girl and she may be started under saddle this year even though she's 15 this year. she was half wild when i got her but now shes pretty good.

the TB was $800 and he tries soo hard to do what you want him to do it just pulls at you. he is a big beast though stands 17hh and weighs somewhere around 1300lbs but is very gentle and aware of where he puts his body

the little filly was $100 and wilder then the mare was when we got her but now almost 3 months later shes alot better nd will turn out good now that she has constant human interaction

My family has owned dozens of horses in my lifetime, and the absolute top price we have ever paid is $6000. There have been many 3 figures, in fact, right now there is one of those, and a freebie in the barn. We have much much more invested in our facilities than we have ever invested in all the horses combined.

But, as we know, a free horse is only free until it becomes yours, then the bills start piling up

                                  ahhh, the crazies

My boy had such a bad reputation for being crazy that his owner just ended up giving him to us, and we were warned by several people not to take him. From the minute he stepped off the trailer he has never put a foot out of place. My friends make fun of him because he comes off XC and within 5 minutes is asleep.
Here is a picture of the "crazy OTTB" that everyone was afraid of:

The most I've ever paid for a horse is just barely has four digits. Other than that:
Belle- Morgan mare, free, best horse ever, been there, done that and won it
                                    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2027/...76cb33.jpg?v=0
Esme- Morgan mare with incredible Morgan sporthorse breeding and gorgeous confirmation and personality, I shelled out a very, very small adoption fee
                                    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3152/...b18d0b.jpg?v=0
Sienna- Anglo/ Arab gelding, totally endurance bred, has siblings with tons of international miles on them, free because as a 6 month old he was dumped at the vet where I worked
                                    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3275/...d335dd.jpg?v=0
Rossi- Imported Westfalen gelding, free because he's much happier carrying my non-horsey DH around on the trails than he was in the show ring

                                    Charisma- Belle's daughter, free

Also have had Miata- Arab mare, free because she was "crazy", worked with her but she was way too small for me, passed her to a good friend for the cost of gas to haul her there and now she's carting kids in endurance rides

Gibson- Welsh/ TB cross free because he cribbed and owner lacked space, sold him as a riding pony

All mine except for one have been econo-nags. 2 free, the other 2 under $2000. 3 of the 4 turned out to be fabulous horses.

pics of 3 of the econo-nags:

Given to me as a yearling, 2 in the pic

My first horse (I was 12 in this pic, don't laugh) we bought for 2k

Current econo-nag, before and afters. Free, aside from the $$ I've put in vet/shoeing/feed thus far.

(Though I will admit the one non-econo nag I had was definitely worth his pricetag and I would have paid it 100 times over for him.)
We couldn't all be cowboys, so some of us are clowns.

my econo horse "came with the barn" that my dad bought. I was only 12 and my Dad told me that he had a surprise for me. I had wished for a horse on my birthday cake candles since I was five and there he was...complete with all the stuff.saddle, bridle, stalls, pasture.HEAVEN!! My Dad bought the farm for the land and it happened to also have this "extra" He jumped everything, picnic tables, coops, the gates in and out of the pasture when he was bored. He was my car. The farrier had to put borium and pads on his shoes because we went so many miles that I would wear everything completely off in 6 weeks. I paid for everything and that was as often as i could afford to get him shod. Nothing spooked him, and he learned to play polo when he was 16. I had to put him down when he was 29 but I have not had a horse teach me as much as he did since then.
