Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> if you take everything anyone says against your opinions and feelings personally, then perhaps you should prevent yourself from even logging on and reading what goes on here.

If I may respectfully point out that most of what happened that resulted in the banishment of said members happened the day before yesterday, maybe you don't realize what really went on? There were a few really offensive threads that were deleted very quickly, and few people saw them. I'm not referring to anything that may have happened in the past between you and Erin... I really have nothing to do with that. But, I did see what was written the other day, and I agree with the decision of the moderators. I may have felt differently if I had not read the deleted threads.

            • I have completely been a lurker throughout this ordeal.

Let me please say that this is a great place, I have met people through it, I've had some laughs, shared tears, cheered Aiden on, etc. etc.

That said: With all due respect, please, all of you, get a life. This is an internet bulletin board. Think of how much time and energy and frustration you are wasting that involves an issue that exists in cyberspace. Let it go, enjoy the BB for what it is worth-- a bulletin board. As much emotion and drama and real-life situations that come about here, when it comes down to it, it is just a BB. Go ride your horse, clean a stall, spend time with family, hang out with friends that are actually there, enjoy your real life that is right in front of you. Sheesh.

                • is 8 pages enough, or do you all want to keep arguing?

I repeat ... the decisions that have been made have been made, and are not going to change.

Those of you who believe the decisions were made on the basis of one or two things are most likely incorrect. You see only the tip of the iceberg.

Since the Moderators and the Administrator have lives, we don't see every last post on the BB as soon as it happens. We don't even read every post on the BB, nor even every thread on the BB. If you see something potentially offensive, it is considered polite to send an email, or click the 'notify' button, NOT start a thread asking your friends to help you bash the Mods or Admin for missing something. My email is listed. The listed address is one I can check when I am at work, and when I am at home. Using it will work better than insulting people

                      • Original Poster

Let go of Miniwelsh and Rockstarr. They were standing up for a principle that they chose to crusade.

This goes back to basic s**t stirring and deliberate actions.

Colin had been banned once before for reprehensible remarks on these forums, specifically singling out one particular moderator. I never saw the post that finally did her in but an earlier post by her on that topic was "We hate it, hit it with a stick" referring to a moderator. Apparently, further banter along these lines along with foul language was the final straw.

She had been warned repeatedly for her behavior back when the membership was under 2,000! Why is she a BB legend? Notoriety.

Colin is a pot stirrer. I have met her several times and, like Moesha and many others, very much admire her for her horsemanship and wit but she has been, more often than not, a very self indulgent member of these forums with a tendancy to post awful things and then reply with phrases meant to say that her meaning was taken incorrectly.

As I stated in my original post upon beginning this topic, had she been more concerned with how her words would be taken, she would have thought hard about how to get her message across.

I understood, as did many of you along with Miniwelsh and Rockstarr (not to list our other, boycotting but favorite BBers), but for Miniwelsh and Rockstarr to hold Colin up as a BB champion and defender of all that is follow the rules is ridiculous.

Far better they had done as I did and brought up the subject in a kind and diplomatic way so as to get a message across without hurting feelings or giving Colin a martyr's halo.

Colin is a very interesting person. Coreene can attest to that, having met her last year at Indio. Think of an Irish Setter in a one bedroom condo. Imagine a Greyhound on a yacht. Just as you choose your house pets for the particular conditions you have in your home, you can't say Colin is bad or good, just not in the most ideal situation.

She has made her own situation re: the COTH BB and moderators untenable. I adore Miniwelsh and hope to get to know Rockstarr. They made a poor choice of standard bearers when they could have accomplished their purpose very well on their own without discord.

Someone has a gripe with the BB or the moderating, let them email the Chronicle. That is where the check for providing the BB comes from.

                        Lets please move on.

                            • Okay, I'm going to add my two cents.

There are 7,142 registered members on this BB, and I bet there are probably 7,142 different opinions as to how this situation should have been handled and how the board should be moderated in general.

Now I'm going to say something that might take you by surprise. I liked Colin- when she was behaving herself. I liked Miniwelsh. I liked Rockstarr. I thought they were fun, interesting members of the BB. But I vehemently disagreed with the way they voiced their opinions on the day before Thanksgiving, and lost some respect for all of them as a result.

I believe that their opinions would have been better received had they emailed Erin, or another moderator, privately, rather than posting about it on the BB. Apparently they had been emailing about the Aiden threads with BB friends for quite some time, and had they put together a little survey, petition, etc., they could have had their voices heard in a much less offensive manner.

And here's another shocker for you. Erin is a really nice person- and works her ass off making this board an enjoyable place for us. Commodore, I like you, you know that, but I can't believe that anyone would be afraid to ask where to buy a saddle for fear of Erin! (And that's not to say that I don't believe you, just that I don't understand why someone would feel that way). Erin is a good person, a good moderator, and a good friend. And the way that people have been bashing her lately is just awful.

Do I always like the direction the boards are headed? No- and during those times, I'll hang out here less frequently. But that direction isn't due to the moderation, in my opinion- it's due to the topics and replies posted by all the BB members.

I really like RolexH. I feel privileged to call her a friend. And Aiden has made this completely non-religious person begin to believe in the power of prayer- and curb chains.

It's been made quite clear that the Aiden threads are allowed to stay- within reason. I'm not sure how many are up right now- maybe 3?- but that seems reasonable to me. And that's the end of the discussion. Don't keep bringing up the subject, don't IM Lisa to ask her to take her story elsewhere.

Are there some borderline OT threads that shouldn't be here? Yes, absolutely. While we are a community, and share in each others ups and downs, there is a limit. Like ETBW said in her original post, if you have to justify the topic with, "This is really OT, but please let me talk about xyz because..." then you know better. Take it to email or private topics. And in my opinion, it's not necessary to post a new topic each time something horse related happens in your life "Ooh, they're taking a horse-and-carriage ride on this TV show!" Posting for posting's sake gets really old really quickly.

And yes, I posted on the OT thread earlier this week. I think I stayed in the PG-13 area, though perhaps others didn't. Did I read every post? No. Should I have? Maybe. But, in my defense, I've been finishing my graduate school applications and haven't spent much time doing anything but that lately. So, if anyone took offense to my words or actions, I'm sorry.

I'm also sorry to hear that some other BB members have left because of these incidents. That's unfortunate.

Finally, I would like to challenge every member of this BB to make this a better, more enjoyable place for us all. Post the (horse-related) topics that will inspire us, bring us together, make us think, make us laugh. Then we'll all have a BB we can be proud of.

                                        • I too have quite a reputation as being a thread killer. I'll try this again.

                                          People, let it go!

Commodore and others: You all obviously think that the BB has been unfairly moderated and that you've been singled out. I haven't read the emails that Erin sent you nor do I care to. I don't know your side of the story but I do know this. You continue to post your displeasure over Miniwelsh and Rockstarr's being banned from the BB. Fine, you don't like it. If you choose not to make the effort to continue a relationship with the people on this BB, then that's your choice. If you choose not to post here anymore or even lurk, then fine, that's your choice too. But please, lay off.

This thread has gone on long enough. I'm suprised it hasn't been locked yet and truthfully I'm looking forward to when it is (although I'm guilty for posting on it once again).
