Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

      Last Call!

Last Call for Gettysburg! The ride is scheduled for this Saturday. The weather forecast is looking wonderful (mid-60's...small chance of rain). We already have a group of about 10 people planning on riding.....

If you would like to join us please PM JazzRider or KlawPaws as soon as possible!

      Thanks!

Well, the COTH Gettysburg Trail Ride is now over Saturday's weather was wonderful! The temperature was in the 60's and, for the most part, cloudy. That was good since the horses still have winter coats and are just starting to shed. I even rode in a t-shirt for the first time this year!

We met at Artillary Ridge. There were a total of 10 riders in addition to 2 non-riding husbands (they went exploring in Gettysburg when we went out to ride the park). The riding group ended up splitting into 2 smaller groups.

One group of 4 left and, unfortunately, they got back and were just leaving when the second group arrived back at Artillary Ridge. I did hear that the picked up a guide somewhere and got a personalized tour but I don't know all the facts on that...

The other group of 6 got a little later start. We did the entire loop minus one trail that lead to/from the youth camp (another small camping area). We didn't have any problems with traffic or the monuments themselves. Half the horses were on their best behavior and, unfortunately the other half had issues that needed to be taken care-of.... They were just stressed a bit and needed to have their personal space. Something for us (me included) to work on. I was persoannly a bit embarrassed by my horse's non-angelic behavior. She was not her normal self. Maybe it was the ghosts?!?! But....the company was excellent and I am very glad I went and rode the trails. It is something I have wanted to do for quite awhile now.

The trails themselves were rocky in spots but otherwise were in decent shape. You can't get real close to the monuments with the horses so I couldn't get any great pictures. I did take my camera but, since my horse was acting up some, I wasn't able to take any pictures anyway. We expected a longer ride but it ended up just taking us two hours (or a tad over two hours). We kept the pace at a walk.

We ended the day by a few of us cooking hamburgers & hotdogs on the grill. We had other goodies such as fruits, veggies, chips, cookies, brownies and ice-tea. A nice way to end a ride and relax before returning home.

I do have one small group picture that I will try to post...if I have trouble I will ask JazzRider (Janet) to post it

I hope everyone had a good time!

We just really lucked out on the weather! It was a super day. It was too bad that we never managed to reconnect with farrier and farrier's daughter and their two friends -- who were fortunate enough to find someone who gave them a bit of a guided tour (maybe he'll give us a report on how things went for them).

I thought the trails were well maintained -- a few muddy spots and a few trees down, but otherwise good. The park's loop bridle trail definately wasn't the four hour ride we were told. We maintained a brisk walk for the whole time and did it in just over two hours.

In our group of six, as Klawpaws said, we had a few horses that were a little more up than the others. But surprisingly, we had no spooks at the monuments, statues, observation tower, people, or even the helicopter that buzzed low past us and landed behind a grouping of trees. So I think the group did well. My guy Rocket (my hubby's horse, the big lug) was his usual unflappable self. And Catalina's son's pony Tinker Bell was absolutely an angel (though Rocket feared her greatly ). It was her son Alex's first trail ride, believe it or now, and he did super.

It was definatly nice to park at Artillery Ridge -- easy access off of Route 15 without having to navigate through town (for those of us who went that way!). And the nice folks there let us park by the horse facilities. Here is the only semi-group shot we took, getting ready to leave Artillery Ridge. It includes, from left to right:

                JazzRider (Janet) & Rocket
                KlawPaws (Karen) & Pride
                Catalina (Lisa) & Conner
                Catalina's son (Alex) & Tinkerbell

We had so much fun yesterday! The weather was amazing and I am so proud of Alex and Tinkerbell. He has never ridden that long before and he did great. He had a couple of 6 year old moments, but they were minor and passed quickly. Tinkerbell was an angel and did her job perfectly, which was take care of her kid. What an awesome pony . And Connor, who I have never taken trail riding before, was sooooo good. Once he realized that we weren't going XC, he settled and I was able to walk him on the buckle. The trail was nice, with lots of varied terrain and a bunch to see. The best part for Alex was the stream when everyone started pawing and splashing; he thought that was too cute.

It would have been really cool to have a guide. Mr catalina was bummed that he didn't get to ride; he would have been an awesome guide. I was so nice meeting everyone and I wish we could have stayed after, but not real horsey husband and Alex were ready to go. Maybe next time (we'll have to include a 6 pack of beer in the after ride festivities ).

jazzrider's Rocket is too cute; anytime he got near tinkerbell, he kept one eye firmly glued to her convinced that she was going to do something evil. It could have been her pinned ears and swishing tail and "I am here, don't squash me" attitude . Living in a herd of 16.2 h and up geldings, she has gotten quite good at exerting herself.

Hmmmm, I'm very curious about what loop you rode. As stated before, DH and I went a few years ago and had a lovely full day ride. We also ended up riding right alongside several of the monuments, between houses and barns, etc. We were on trails the whole way (would not dream of going off trail in such a place!), but did not ride with a group or guide. Glad you had a good time - I know that we can't wait to go back with our daughters.

some ideas for you guys -- if you decide to do alot of riding up there - consider joining the Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society - for the membership fee you can park for free at Artillary Ridge.
For a nice guided ride where you get to ride your own mounts - check out their homepage ( Artillary Ridge may also have a link to it) as they sponser a guided ride 3-4 times a year with the money raised going to the Society to help repair and maintain the trails. I do know ( I was the treasurer for a few years) that they spend $3000 - $5000 a year in stone alone, not to mention man power ( which are volunteers) to maintain the trails. They also provide a snack and lunch after the ride.
As for those who had mis behaved horses - that is pretty consistant for those rides. Most horses aren't used to the monuments, canons, etc - and I do swear that there are ghosts in that first path that you take after leaving Artillery Ridge. All the guided rides I was on ( I had the pleasure of being the rear wrangler ) the guides NEVER stopped in the woods - always walked straight through. If everyone stayed on their horses and you kept some what under control, you guys had a great ride!

A huge "Thank You" to Jazzrider and Klawpaws for coordinating the ride. The weather was perfect and the food hit the spot!
Buckwheat is usually pretty level headed and was for most of the ride. He became "possessed" toward the end of the ride. The turd was throwing fits and acting like he had a burr under his tail. This, of course, inspired the other horses to do the same.
                        We made it home safely!
During the ride, I kept trying to imagine what it must have been like during the battle of Gettysburg. We were riding and talking about such trivial things on such hallowed grounds. It almost felt wrong! But seeing the cannon ball hole in the side of the barn was pretty cool!
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary...

Appaloosalady, about 2-3 years ago, the park service regroomed the trails. They eliminated some loops, and made trails that the riders have to stay on. That eliminated quite a bit. I have ridden their since 1978, and I could tell how the trails were shrinking. There was some erosion, and usually the grounds are always wet, even in the summer, so I think they went around those areas to prevent more erosion. Its hard to go thru town to get to the peace light due to traffic, people, etc. We don't do that any more.
