Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

        Let's see, I have a bunch:

        * To own a horse someday. A horse who I enjoy and who I look forward to seeing every day as much as I do my lease horse.
        * To be able to consistently ride my lease horse in the desired frame.
        * To live closer to the barn.
        * To be good enough to compete competently in a recognized HT (I don't even have to place, I just want to feel up to par).
        * To make lots & lots of great horsey friends so I'll always have people to ride with (when I want to) and people to exchange stories with.
        * To find a pair of tall boots that comfortably fit horrible calves.
        * To lose about 40 lbs so that I don't have to constantly think about how my big butt looks in a pair of breeches.
        * To be able to canter or gallop for whatever stretch of time without getting winded.
        * To be able to ride bareback again.
        * To foxhunt
        * To ride in some more hunter paces.
        * To at least reach the level of competence in jumping that I had when I was younger (I actually think that I will accomplish this).
        * To reach a state where my trainers look at me and say, "wow, you really have come a long, long way since you started riding with us."

I'm sure that I have many more -- as a newish re-rider I'm still really enthusiastic and excited about my riding and the progress that I'm making. But these are the things that come immediately to mind.

These are great! I'm not usually a gaited fan but those keg shod speed rackers got me a little choked up!!

I've got a few more that I call "plans" - but my husband calls them "fantasies":
            • To build a 24x28 foot addition to our goat shed (a two horse run-in, a feed room, a tack room and an aisle).
            • To spend about 10 grand and make a really good all-weather outdoor arena in our field. I've got the space staked out and everything!
            • To buy my neighbor's mule. (It's not that wild - he's willing to sell at a good price and with generous terms, but I JUST.DONT.HAVE.ANY.MONEY.)
            • To have a nice horse van in great mechanical condition.
            • To teach my ACD to trail ride without constantly whining underfoot and trying to rescue me from the hoof beast. A good ten feet of space would be GREAT.
            • 75 yards of 1/4" minus plus fines. See arena, above, plus some to spare for the sacrifice paddocks and goat pen.
            • Buying another 20-40 acres in Skagit or Whatcom County and growing my own hay.
            • Spending all of my summer weekends at my mom's Cowboy Campsite, a trailhead property where we own space to corral our horses and establish a base camp. It's twenty minutes from my home and should be within reach as the kids grow older, provided we can find and support a couple of good trail horses (and mules).
            • Making it as a freelance writer - kind of tough when I never actually get my ass off COTH and send out my writing! I need to get on the ball with this. Nothing ventured, nothing gained - and without trying, I'll never know what open doors I might be passing. (Maybe I could be financing that mule right now!)

Oh wait, you wanted horsey fantasies.

Well, if we're talking fantasies as opposed to something I actually have an ice cube's chance in Hades at accomplishing, it would be to take a performance championship at the U.S./Canadian Arabian Nationals.

Which Cowboy Campsite spot is your mom's? We have space 5 in the first section. Right across from where the office used to be. Can't wait to get up there this spring/summer.

My fantasy used to be to go on a pack trip but since I moved to the west coast and my DH is heavily into packing, that fantasy has been satisfied.

Earlier fantasy was to adopt a BLM mustang. Which I did.

Newest fantasy is that said mustang is going to be the eventer I want her to be. I know, it's a fantasy and I can dream.

                        Fantasy

Mine is to be the exacting, firm but fair, mistress of an english riding school, with about 10 various beautifully-cared for school horses and a beautifully organized tack room - teaching the next generation of riders, giving lots of lunge lessons, and so on. Including a facility with a galloping track all around the perimeter. Sigh.

Sigh...My 30th wedding anniversery present was getting to keep my home bred three year old stallion. I love this horse, and I have grand dreams of working him in versatility...The truth is that unless I geld him, he will be my husband's horse 150%. My husband, he is well suited to this horse's (stallion) temperament.

Being a (slightly) oveweight, middle aged fat chick...SUCKS!!!

I will stick to my mares to ride and drive, thank you. But, but, but...

                          I dream.

The good news? The best horse I have ever bred, is staying here (even if I won't train him by myself)! YES!!!

                            Horse fantasy?
                            1) horses that need to see the vet ONLY for routine stuff...shots and floating, etc.
                            2) horses that poop on one corner of the stall ALL the time and never ever tap dance in it. They also wouldn't think sleeping with their head in the pee spot was a good idea.
                            3) Teflon coated horses...no mud, dirt, grass stains, pee stains etc.
                            Barn fantasty?
                            1) cobweb proof barn
                            2) horse proof barn
                            3) finish the stuff on the property like the ring, fencing and rest of the drainage.
                            Riding fantasy?
                            1) chase cows
                            2) try sidesaddle
                            3) ride something gaited...I never have except for a shuffling app once
                            4) foxhunt
                            5) drive something
                            6) pretty much any discipline I haven't tried yet...it's always fun to cross the discipline barriers. Except for vaulting...not interested in that. Probably because I'm not coordinated to try that stuff on the ground...forget on a moving horse, LOL!
                            You jump in the saddle,
                            Hold onto the bridle!
                            Jump in the line!

Draco we sold last fall (I know, all my silly names -it is easy to mix them) but Corbeau...I didn't take him to auction. Corbeau is the "huma huma" boy, as I like to call him.

I convinced Rob that he was too good and here he is! Very happy dance.

My (not so secret) other fantasy is to go the Morgado Lusitano in Lisbon, for a week for lessons and ride their school master stallions. I go to their website occassionally and dream.

Ach, yes, I meant Corbeau... darn menopause. Definitely the Hubba Hubba Horse! I am glad he's staying where he belongs. You'll need a successor to Charles one day (hopefully NOT soon) and he's da man.

Maybe you could connect with Qualice from PHN in Italy. It's not quite Lisbon but close!

Mine would be to gallop from start to finish the entire length of a top notch golf course. I giggle to my self everytime I pass one because I think of this everytime.

Also to work at a real cattle ranch.

This would be my horse Bucket List.
Drive a 6 up of my home bred shire mares at a major show. This is a ways off because I only have one home bred shire mare and her perchased mother at the present.

Brightwhites - Do you have an MGA near you? Mounted Games Association? There is no upper age limit and they compete up to international level. Fun all the way.
