Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • RRB,
I'm afraid not. Your colleague probably does work with our department head, Dr. Moore. My focus is materials for tissue engineering of bone and cartilage both in the body and to regenerate limbs out side of the body and to understand bone tissue from a materials/biologic perspective. I know Northwestern has a Biomaterials group out there and I would love to meet with them. Perhaps when I go to the Wayne DuPage Horse Trials? :-)

    • I just told everyone to dress in age inappropriate clothing and head for their nearest frozen food aisle.

On a serious note, women, and men for that matter, who don't have any outside interests in their lives other than finding the perfect mate are such desperate bores. Although I don't have much free time to spend with the girls, I have to say I am thankful that when I do have the time, I'd rather be spending it out at the barn pulling a mane or two than searching through classified ads on the internet in search of someone who matches my criteria for a potential perfect mate. I figure, if their out there, we'll find eachother. If not, the spawn of satan really doesn't need to come into existence within our lifetime anyway

A "good day" for Reed being any day that Suzy isn't holding the step stool over her head and out of Reed's reach saying, "nyah, nyah."

Oh heck, I'll loan the darned stool to you for your trip to meet Velvet... Oh, and the frying pan, too. PLEASE DO TAKE the frying pan with you. You'll be needing it.

NU does have some biomaterials people, but I always was more of a metal head. Still, I can certainly hook you up with some people to turn the Wayne DuPage Horse Trials into a business trip for you -- or we can talk shop for 5 minutes and call it time well spent!

                • Having separated/divorced over three years ago and NOT ONE DATE since I find this thread fascinating. I think I'm finally ready to meet some new people but don't see how they would fit into my new life. Feed/turnout at 6:00 am, work 7:00 to 4:00, bring in/feed at 5:00pm, stalls and bedtime snack at 10:00pm. Try to ride in between and skip cleaning the house and still not enough time to be social. My best guy friend thinks I have so much to offer some lucky guy that I should make an effort to get out there and find him. HOWEVER, Reed you have to drive right by here to get to Wayne DuPage and I've ALWAYS wanted to live in Golden. I'll make time for YOU babe :-).

Don't hurt me Velvet, please. Suzy, help, help!

He's 6'5", brown hair, green eyes. he's a captain in the Air Force currently station in Idaho, but will be up for Major sometime next spring. Not sure on teh whole horse thing, but he does have 2 dogs. Kind of a geek (materials engineer by degree, space program by a.f. training), but nice enough, athletic, and extremely loyal. Any takers? • First of all, thank you Velvet for posting another note in this thread. I was starting to have visions of having to tell my brother that I tried to set him up off the BB, on a thread that was probably one of the longest in the history of the BB... but that as soon as I posted his picture, the thread died! Talk about giving a guy a complex!!

Second, Velvet... I still don't recall seeing your name in lights as any kind of winner... ok, other than figuring out the phone number thingy. If that's what you're talking about, fine. otherwise, until I see something to the contrary, you ain't won nothing yet, girlfriend.

Third, Reed, you are talking about the September Wayne event, right? I was actually thinking about making my Intermediate debut there this year, but since Char's been off for the last several weeks with a sprained suspensory, I won't be there. Bummer. good luck! (but hey, at least I know where and when the event is... points for me! neener, neener, Velvet!)

                                • tle, I can not go to Wayne in September. I actually have to teach my class this Fall. What, I let my job interfere with my horses!? Sacrilege! I need to save vacation and dinero so I can go to Camino in November. I have several collaborators in TX so I can even get the university to pay part of my hauling expenses. :-) Too bad about Char. How about we go against each other next June? ;-)

Velvet, as you do not call or show up at my door with a detailed list of where and what I have been doing for the past month, it isn't stalking. Actually, if anybody ever stalked me, I'd be surprised they could stay awake, my life is that boring. Come to think of it, if you ever came up with a detailed list of my activities, I'd have to give you credit for actually taking the time to fill out a 3x5 card about my life. ;-)

As for meeting up, well, NASA is not expecting any Mars missions until 2025 and I do not think Olympus Mons is considered a landing site. I did put in for the astronaut corps in 1997 but gave it up since I already work for them and I have a major problem with that kind of authority. How about some sort of low earth orbit rendezvous? Our next shuttle payload flys in December.

xcjumper, Nicole Kidman, huh. We will definitely need to plan for Casa de los Caballos in March! ;-)

Also, side bar for a minute, I heard that Camino was bankrupt and won't be running if they don't get their sponsors back! They never paid out to the winners of the last 3 Day and I know because a couple of my friends were expecting $$$ and never got it. If that's true, you will just have to come to Galway to do your 3Day!!!

Don't worry, tle you did not kill the thread. There's no killing this one But, your brother might kill you!!!!!!

What size font are we talking about using on that 3x5 card?? Is it along the lines of the old adage, "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? As many as wants to." (Say it with a British accent and you'll see that the grammar works.) Or are we talking pica? If it's the latter instead of the former, I might take pity on you and decide to stalk you to add some spice to your life.

As for the shuttle launch, that's actually something I've been considering doing this winter or next spring (before Rolex). I'd LOVE to watch a launch and used to have a friend (he's now involved and never available) that could get the VIP tickets. *sigh* I missed that opportunity, but I do want to go and see one in person. (My favorite thing on TV is watching the Earth go by under the shuttle, the EVAs and of course the night launches.)

BTW, with all these excuses I'm beginning to think you don't want to give me my piggy back ride!! *pout*

                                        • Ah, Velvet. In my case we are talking about some fat assed angles on that pin. We are talking 72 point font on a 3x5 card.

I will stand by my commitment to give you a piggy-back ride. :-)

At the moment we have shuttle missions in December and January. I'll see what I can do about a pass. Admittedly, I may not be there. It seems I always get sent to the alternate landing site (Edwards, CA) which isn't bad since there are always experimental aircraft flying. Launches are very cool, but landings are even wilder.

To keep this on a horse related topic, I have been trying to get funding for a new treatment for equine arthritis based upon data we got from a shuttle mission (STS-77 in 1996) examining IGF-1's ability to reverse osteoporosis.

To keep this about being single. I was single back then too. :-)

xcjumper, that sucks about Camino! Being single, I went to AZ the past 2 years for Trojan Horse. I used to go down there for the show circuit in Goodyear, when I was still single. Galway would be cool, being a single. ;-)
