Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • My trainer loves reminding me that "only chickens and bad girls lay"... haha

    • "Well, I have enjoyed the thread and, to be honest, if I spoke to a trainer who talked to me about "confirmation" when discussing how a horse is put together, I would assume that that trainer knows less than I do about "conformation". "

      Really?

Did you mean to let the cat out of the bag; that you would have no idea whether he was right or wrong about his knowledge of conformation other than his pronunciation or the correct use of the word?

In other words, you can't tell whether his observation of a shoulder is correct or not, you can only tell that he mispronounced or used the wrong word?

      Really?

If you know the difference between good and bad confirmation, judge him on that.

      • You know, being a naturally good speller as a child, I thought that people who couldn't spell were dumb. As I got older I realized how wrong I was. I had a friend with a doctorate from Yale who was brilliant but couldn't spell even the most basic words. In retrospect, I think he was probably dyslexic, which makes his academic achievements even more remarkable, considering that dyslexia wasn't really recognized back in those days. His way around it was making his handwriting intentionally terrible so his teachers couldn't tell words were misspelled. Now, with computers and spellcheck, it may be a little easier, but even the most sophisticated computer programs aren't going to notice the difference between something like confirmation and conformation. I honestly believe that not everyone is born with the natural ability to be a good speller, and it has very little to do with intelligence. But irregardless, I do love me a good grammar police thread

        • I don't think this thread is about misspelling words, it's much more about misusing them -- either in verbal conversation or "conversation" on BBs.

On confirmation/conformation -- it's such a basic horse term, someone who is supposed to be knowledgeable about horses should really be able to get it right. As in any profession, it should make you at least wonder if a so-called expert does not use the correct term.

            • I guess I am a little bit too touchy on the subject.

I have spent 80 years in the real world.

              Short example.

I have a small machine shop left over from the days when the furniture business was king in the South and I was very active as a machinery distributor.

The shop is a shadow of its former self, but I still have two guys in it that can fix anything so long as it is not an improperly constructed sentence!

They fix items every day that have descriptions or names they can't spell.

And every day, we repair or make a part for a company run by a Harvard or Harvard lookalike, with a maintenance department run by a graduate engineer.

The point being that not everyone knows everything about everything. While you and I were getting our education and trying to find a job commensurate with our education and ambition, there were many working long hours welding, running a lathe or whatever and they have become so skilled that we are smart to rely on them.

I dare say the horse business is no different.

My definition of an educated man is: That the man is educated well enough that he does an outstanding job in his profession.

I hope we don't discourage those persons from posting here.

I doubt that my horse cares much about whether I spell his name correctly.

She would go through his papers and straighten things around for him. This fellow was brilliant, kind, funny. He is successful in his career. Spelling/pronounciation doth not maketh man, and besides, COTH has many COTHisms that are unique to this board.

cssjr, kindly re-read post 92. I think in it you will find not criticism of others but a desire to respect the power of language and the ability of clear communication to transcend barriers of class and education. Also, as I think has been exhibited throughout this whole thread, an approach that is essentially good-humoured and inclusive.

I won't reiterate my thoughts on the correlation between human/human communication and human/horse communication to justify this thread as legitimate on a horse forum, but I will say that you presume far too much when you speculate on the "advantages" in my life and education. You have absolutely no idea what my educational background or socio/economic standing is, and to make assumptions based solely on the fact that I am a fan of the English language is to reveal that you, like so many, DO base distinctions of "class" upon language.

You must be practicing to be a comedian.

As for not poking fun at others, I think you need to consider not what the persons who have posted here think, as I realize none of them meant any harm, but think about how those who do have spelling and/or writing difficulties feel when they read these posts.

I repeat that we will have done ourselves harm if we cause them to quit posting.

As for your remark about "class", I think my last post about the guys in my shop says it all. I not only respect them, I wish I could do the things they do. I might be envious that my 80 years has been wasted when I could have spent that time learning to do some of the stuff they do.

With that, I am done. I do have things that interest me more.

are you taking the piss out of others

sometimes people mis spell words when theres not a thing they can help or do to change something
when people have deslextic it comes in varies froms from slight to severe and if people were diagnoise late in life as i was myself as in them days you was classed as dumb so either were instiutionalised or they didnt bother to teach you i was lucky to have stayed at home where my mum helped all she could but her back ground wasnt the best as she was born and brought up in a work house
unlike my father whom came for avery good and wealthy background that went pear shaped in my tot years
but its ok to say spell check but when one has it severe its not that easy common words used like the majority you use daily you learn the word to be used but there no placement or facility to understand the word used or the menaing behind the word for the word to be used

for exsample lets use a simple word --- pig

in a farmers world the word pig is an animal
in london slang the word pig - means a policeman which can also be called a copper and copper is a penny yet copper is also a mineral

another meaning for the word pig-- in uk is you are a git in horse terms we would say perhaps he was a git of a horse-- you would say hes a pita of a horse

in uk as with yourselves we have counties you have states each county prenonces the words differently with there own accent
and londoners are slipt in to four north south east and west southeast londoners are the cockney
types for exmsaple to so the pronouncations are slightly different again

ie - dog and bone -- phone
                                apple and stairs-- pairs
                                2 and 8 -- you in a state etc

if you have seen fools and horses with david jason as del boy and rodney
then its spot on -- as lovely jubbly
                                thats my language

and depends with the grammer side if again you had the proper education and that it was picked up early in like one would then learn to perhaps where to put the full stops or comma

for i wirte a good letter so iam told but i ahve to ask my other half to read it for me so he can putthe spaces and dots and cross the t's so to speak as i dont breath i just write

and on here i try to make it easier for people to read wha i write by moving the space back and dwon key so putting a gap between each sentence
but that doesnt mean to say that they are thick or that they lack a certian class type as all people in my book are equal be abled bodied or disabled bodied we are all humans and should be treated with respect for one another regardless if one can spell or not
plus those people that write books and those people that poke fun at them it might be becuase they have a different langage to ourselves so they to might not understand to use the correct word in the correct formate becuase they are from a different country

then one should read for content and not context therfore one would gain more information and not discriminate others for lack off of something because they think they are more superior than the person that wrote the book

but then the person that wrote the book is more superior than the one that reads the books or others with written difficulites becuase they taken every one as equal and not discriminated between class or those that read the book or not or words of another

in other words no one better than i am --nor are they a higher class than me if they were they wouldnt be on here on a bb there by jetting off doing something positive to help other less than fortunate than themselves perhaps i know i would be as i do that now with horses and poines
giving them that stepping stone into a new life and a perminant one

and one last thing some have said that posters go away becuase they have been ridiculed
do people know that when they pick up on others so called spelling mistakes and grammer for those that have problems etc how much it can knock ones confidence or how in society you limited at times
or how so many times you get called thick or a moron chip chip at your confidence over the years or over every post you post self esteem can go right oon the floor for somelse thoughtlessness and lack of tack or prospective in how to understand each person is different and we human and
bulling comes in many terms be vindicted for lack of spelling and grammer is a form of bulling so people get up set and never come back as we type have that all our lives people think its not
a disablity becuase your able bodied but its is a disiblity when one cant put the right letter or word or understand the words used in the right context due to lack of the educational system that let you down

so next time befoer you grouch have a bit of compassion and understanding before you start thread like these

                                  • I can't speak for anyone else, but I can generally tell the difference between someone who is dyslexic (or has a similar issue), someone who is speaking/writing English as a second language, and someone who just hasn't bothered to learn his/her native tongue. The former two don't bother me at all; it's the latter that drives me batty.

look in any old photo album of grandaprents and you find here in uk its ends in sam and I

and not me and sam but nowadays the improtance of how one speaks is taken out of prospective in how they were brought up
old school as in perhaps private education systems would say I as one would not be
seen to class themsleves as me its how you been brought up plays an important part
in how one speaks and how society has change the way one speaks
