Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

My new showmanship outfit is styled after a tunic I saw at On The Rail but has my own ideas for finishing. Quote

If you meant that it was a tunic you saw at the On The Rail website, since I find it highly unlikely that you made the trek to St. Petersburg from Ontario, then let me tell you, that is one of the owner's pet peeves. I buy all my clothes from them and she has told me many times that it is very discouraging for her to know that people are stealing her designs off her website. And by the way, that is why she doesn't post her very best designs there.

    • For some of you former horse show moms and western riders:
If you get the Quarter Horse Journal, look in the last issue for an add for the new "Select" class. This is an age division for people 50 and older. The AQHA is having a World Show for select riders. And guess who the poster girl is for this new class - ME!! Yep, I'm the one in the green outfit opening the gate! I didn't know this picture was being taken, and I was very suprised to see myself in the magazine. It has been in the Journal three times now, and they tell me it has appeared in two other publications.

      • Wow In2Lopen.... very cool! I don't get the QHJournal, only the AppJournal and the buckskin pubs for both registries, but my trainer does, and I'm going to scroll through it this very afternoon at the barn so I can see you in person! And as for the age division... won't be that long until I'm in that catagory. I hope App does some 50+ by then since I don't have a QH... hmm... unless we end up with a buckskin QH for previously mentioned teen daughter..... then maybe it's payback time! Of course, it may not be an issue since we are very small timers just moving out of open shows and venturing into our ApHC/IBHA/ABRA breed shows this year-- we could be back in the open ring with our pretty fake tail between our legs to learn alot more!

        • in2lopen, what a coincidence! I was just reading the Journal, took a break to check the bb, and saw your message. Went back and there you are on page 298! Great picture! I'm adding trail and western riding to my classes this year, and am anxious for show season to start----it's a bit less year round here than in California. I love the idea of a Select championship, and will go watch, but even though I qualify age-wise, I want to use up all my novice points before I head off into Amateur-land. I know I'll need a new horse for that, and am having too much fun right now with my Novice guy Have a great year, and I will cheer you on in Amarillo!

          • lol about the fake tail between the legs. I don't have any fake tails on my horses because (luckily) they have really nice tails. But I'd love to add a bit of blond to my sorrel's tail...
About open shows. I did the trail classes at the Pacific Coast Horse Show Assoc. Those classes were harder than the AQHA trail classes because they allowed 2 foot jumps! They usually weren't 2 feet high, but we did have in and outs and tripple combinations! Try that in a western saddle and no hard hat... I did it for years, and I never ever saw anyone fall off or a horse stop! At AQHA shows it's harder to get a ribbon because there are so many more competitors and so many more quality horses. However, don't put down your efforts at open shows 'cause you still have to do the class, and it can be even more difficult.

No, my new outfit's not a rip-off of an On The Rail design. The basis for the undecorated tunic is similar but the finish work is all mine and nothing like anything I saw in the On The Rail trailer at the Congress, on their website or on any other website.

I'm not advocating stealing other people's designs. I do think that there is nothing wrong with looking at as many options as possible and then combining your own ideas with the best of what you've seen to come up with something unique. Even better if you can have it made for less than the outrageous prices some of the better known show clothes companies are demanding.

                • I am eligible for the AQ Select classes now, but the gals around here who show Select are coming right out of Amateur, having shown there for many years, and I don't feel up to their level, considering I'm still a Novice Amateur.

Hear, hear! Who can afford upwards of $300 for a vest? And the showmanship outfits! forget about it. Heck, some people think I spend a lot of money on my show clothes (my husband - hehe), but I don't spend NEARLY as much as a lot of people do. And, if you can find a cheaper alternative (without infringing on any copyrighted designs, etc.), I say go for it.

                        • Speaking of western show clothes......this week my 14 year old daughter was asked to carry sponsors flags on her mare in between events at our county fair rodeo this summer. She's on cloud 9- the very idea of hanging out in the pen area w/ "real rodeo queens" then galloping around the arena carrying a flag and chasing the steer back into pens- has her mind going a mile a minute!! Of course she immediately started looking at something VERY FLASHY, colorful and shiney to wear! Its' so much fun to see the grin on her face!

Her mare was Miss Rodeo Iowas Grand Entry mare a couple years ago so she's a "been there, done that" rodeo event horse. Can't wait!

                            • This is great-- I've been gone for a week and have new posts to read.. I'll check out the other western bb right away. And do I ever hear you on the rising $$$$ of western pleasure show clothes. Sigh. That's another reason that two memebers of this family will not be doing WP at the same time. That, and the fact that we have only one western show saddle, and at the prices I've seen lately, that's the only one we are likely to have! Sure hope it fits my daughter's next horse.. hmm, could that be another qualifier to add to the search list, like must load and trailer well, must utilize one of the "buffet of bits" we already own?

                                  • Speaking of boring english attire, I have a problem.
As I have become too big for my jacket and have yet to sell it, (size 12 hunter green awesome condition btw).
I have a black jacket that belong to a friend, its a size 16- 1 size too big for me- Im thinking of having it altered to fit me (grandmother is a pro. seamstress), and pair it with rust breeches!!
Now before I go ahead and buy a new pair of rust breeches, are they even accepted in the stock breed english classes??
Now I really would prefer a new jacket in either a gray of navy, but if I cant sell mine I cant buy a new one!!
                                    What do you all think??

I admit I've put a little wear and tear on the computer keyboard looking at the shirt options! Yup, fringe is a requirement, along with LIHS Western Chair's sparkle! Our mare is a palomino and my daughter has solid teal and solid purple saddle blankets so we'll focus on colors that will work with those! It will be hotter than heck in August so she'll need something that breathes a lot!

I'm watching eBay for rodeo Queens attire on auction! I guess I need to sell my tattersal hunting vest and wool hunt coat to justify spending $$ on a fro-fro outfit!

                                      • I'm glad to see people are posting again. The other boards aren't half as good as this one!
Lita, I'd stay away from the rust. I love it, but it's out of date. Go for the beige or the greenish beige they now use.
I'm again in the Quarter Horse Journal with different picture that must have been taken the same day. It's on page 298 of the April issue. I think it's really funny that they keep on using pictures of me that I never even knew were taken. I'm sort of the Lone Ranger because my face doesn't really show. Though at Sun Circuit (Phoenix) people recognized me from the photo, and I wasn't even wearing the same outfit.
I was hoping to qualify for this show, but I doubt it. I show trail in Novice Amateur and Amateur or Select. I have 3 points in Select, but I need 9, and I don't know if I'll go to enough shows to qualify. Earning points in the Select or Amateur class is hard because these ladies are so good.
