Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • I've been hitting my treadmill here trying to take off these pounds I've gained during my recuperation. The treadmill is about the only thing available right now to do. Between 20 inches of snow, and now flooding due to the pouring rain and the melting 20 inches of snow........AUGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

The positive thing is that my arm is feeling better and better and once the weather starts cooperating, I may be able to start riding sooner then I thought. I can't wait to ride!!!!!

      • Okay... As I sit here eating an entire sleeve of Thin Mints (those Girl Scouts are evil!), I am contemplating my day tomorrow. At 8:30 a.m., I am going to take up racquetball! A friend from church told me she was looking for a partner, so I volunteered if she would help me learn. Then, at 10 a.m. I have an appointment at Curves which is some sort of exercise place where (supposedly) you go 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time and get firm and toned! So, anybody want to bet how long it will take for me to be totally crippled? The G.S. cookies are almost gone now, so that should help! OY!
P.S. This is why I ride a QH - her butt will always be bigger than mine

I always dread those phone calls from my friends that have girls....."do you want to buy some girl scout cookies?"

I just want to say, hon, have you seen my butt, does it really look like I need them????

I've got to loose more weight before I go to Florida next month. People will take one look at me in a swimsuit and start screaming that they are blind!!!!

            • Lita you're mare is beautiful!! I love paints in general, but she's really pretty!! I love the look on her face, she looks like such a sweetie! April is the princess of our barn too, not to mention the Boss Hoss!

You guys are evil bringing up the weight issue!!!

I get on the scale and I'm ready to cry! MUST bust out the rowing machine, but with this weather and other stuff, I'm not sure when I'll actually use it. I'd much rather be able to start riding regularly again!!

This snow and flooding (helped a friend strip flooded stalls yesterday) and now ice are dreadful. One of our main roads is closed this am due to ice! Blechh, where is spring?

Personally, I'm not going to worry about the weight I've gained this year. I figure when the lawn dart launcher whips me over his head, the heaviest part of my body (my butt) will land first, and be the most padded.

                      • Hey, guys, if you're looking for a little conditioning, try what the ancient Greeks/ Romans recommended...handwalk your horses around the countryside! If my memory serves me correctly (feel free to help me out here, experts!) I believe Xenophon recommended at least an hour's walk at a quick pace at least once a day.

Just think of the benefits! You'll lose weight, and condition your riding muscles in a new way. Your horse will have extra time in-hand, so those showmanship classes will be a snap! Leg injuries from lunging (and lunger dizziness) will be greatly reduced!

I had planned on starting some showmanship ground work, but with the ICE all over, and no indoor, it makes things kind of difficult. Jack wants OUT, and so do the mares..........< his little harem, he loves it !!!> but way to much ice for them to be out safely.

I wish I could do that!!! Until we get a really good thaw up here, not a chance!! Heck even when we get the thaw we will be swimming in mud up to our ears!

I dread the mud season. Miss Liz LOVES the mud! She almost never rolls, unless there is a lovely mudpuddle near by. I hate grooming off dried mud that is 2 inches thick!

                                • Okay, here's a story to brighten up your cold, winter day. It brightened up my day when it happened!
Last year in June my show mare, Scotchie, was put down after being diagnosed with lymphoma so I found myself at the beginning of show season without a horse (that, of course, is not the good part). Anyway, I went horse hunting with a vengeance and found a horse about 3 hours away. After looking twice and finally getting her vetted (and her passing), I brought Lucy home. She was much more horse than Scotchie had been, but more talented, too. So, I started riding and showing her right away - our first show was less than 2 weeks after I brought her home. We did well at the shows and I was riding at least 4 times a week and we were starting to click. One Sunday, my friend and I took Lucy up to the arena where the shows are usually held to practice. This was not a show day for me, but to my surprise there was a show (sponsored by a different organization than the ones I show in) going on. My friend and I looked at each other, checked out what show clothes I had in the trailer, and decided to show! I quick threw on a slinky and vest, my boots were in the trailer (I usually ride in sneakers ), and grabbed my hat. The only thing amiss was I had to ride the jeans I was wearing which were not nearly long enough to look good in the saddle - oh, well. So, my friend brushed (the face and body) and tacked up the horse while I was getting dressed and I loped up to the in-gate and just made it in in time. It was a small WP class (only 6) and we won! The icing on the cake was that one of the gals I beat was someone I had been in a neck-and-neck race for a year-end high point in another association a few years before. I beat her out by 2 points by year end and she went on to become a professional! When we got back to the trailer, I realized Lucy still had some dirt on her legs! Lucky she is a PBW (plain brown wrapper)! That was fun!
"She's called Lucy because she often has some 'splaining to do."

                                  • Great story Scotchdun!! You and Lucy sound like quite a team!! Thanks for the lift!!

As for the sneakers- not so shocking to me who usually rides in sneakers or hiking boots! Much more comfortable in MHO.

And as for the plain brown wrapper on Lucy- April is brown too, despite being a paint and being registered as black! She does have sort of a two-tone shading (I'll post a pic tonight or tom, she may be a black with a modifier), but that just makes it harder to tell whether she's dirty or not!

I LOVE it, it's sort of like a multi-colored brown/black chair that doesn't show up how many filthy pairs of jeans have been sitting on it!

                                    • I have a question for all of you Western riders/enthusiasts.

Would you take offense if someone told you they wouldn't sell their horse to a Western rider? As background, it's a classic-type QH mare, 15.1 hh, built very stocky and "western type". But the owner rides her dressage, where she hasn't done very well, since she's not really built for the task.

Now she's up for sale, but I was told she wouldn't sell her to anyone doing "western".

I was put off by this, to be honest with you. I guess the biases are still out there...like anyone who rides in a western saddle is some sort of "yahoo" or something. But what's funny is I rode English for years: hunters, dressage, combined training. So I haven't changed anything about ME but the style of riding.

Have you experienced that sort of response?
                                      Any thoughts?

                                      Comment

                                      • I'd probably be a bit insulted, especially considering that my dressage riding friends thought the reining clinic I went to was very interesting, useful and similar in basis to their dressage training/goals.

Not to mention that our horses are pretty darn spoiled and their welfare always comes before ours.

My reaction, however, would be "hey, your loss, good luck selling your horse to someone who's going to keep trying to make her do something she's not built for. Assuming, of course, that you can find an english rider who will buy her"

I'd feel worse for the horse who would probably be a lot happier doing western stuff, assuming of course that this is really a case where the horse is physically unable to do dressage.

Edited to say: I mention the physical aspect because I have a friend with a stocky classic QH gelding that she does dressage with. He's still learning, but he is fantastic when everything clicks! Then again, he's not built downhill, just very wide, dare I say it, more like a WB.

                                        • Saddleup,I agree with my bud sandbar on this one...why should the mare( or any horse for that matter) be unhappy, or a potential owner who would shower her with love ???
Has this person ever been to a western pleasure show??? seen a pleasure, trail, or showmanship class? Take her to one !!
My guy was an english horse before we bought him, and my daughter tried english with him ( diagnosed with mild navicular changes about 8 months after we bought him, he got xrayed, and diagnosed < I wore the leather apron, oh joy !!>, got put on some drugs and corrective shoeing) we dropped him down to the slower pace of western pleasure < my daughters favorite riding style> and he LOVES it, light contact, no pounding over jumps, and he's still going strong at 22. I put english tack on him last year and you could see him saying to himself " WHAT IS THIS?? YOU HAVE THE WRONG HORSE HERE, I'M A COWGIRL HORSE NOW !!!"
