Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • sandbarhorse,

I would love to try reining. It looks like such a blast. Living in MD there don't seem to be trainers all over the place & I'm trying to decide on a trainer that isn't tooo far away.

Tiny is super athletic and bred for reining on her sire's side. Sire-Doc's Bubba Lou- his sire Docs Benito Bar and his sire Doc Bar.

I've trained T myself & I'd like to find a trainer that would be willing to teach both of us. It would be great if they had some made reining horses that I could take a few lessons on. Sending a horse of mine away isn't my style.

Oh Ei, You're too kind, but you so did not need my help (which was not much by the way). Don't let Ei fool you, everyone, she lives for a good battle!!!

mkbrown- I have the same problem, in a way. I'm lucky that I have a trainer who has given April all the basics, but I wonder about training with a local reining trainer and I'm not inclined to send her away to be "finished" (heck Mr. SBH and I have had her since she was a yearling and started her under saddle), I'm a little too protective.

My plan is to go watch some of the local trainers and keep getting 3rd party feedback and hopefully I'll be able to find someone suitable. I really wish my trainer focused more on reining because she is wonderful and extremely talented. Luckily, I have a little time left before I'll have to find a "reiner" to take us to the next level.

I'm kind of suprised to hear about MD not having many reining trainers. For some reason I thought there were some in MD, but maybe not near you.

Good luck finding a suitable one. I'm sure they'll have a finished horse you can ride.

The NRHA has a few good videos that you could check out. The one on penalties and plus points is really good and shows horses going from the worst to the best. It even points out the errors/bonuses! It was recommended by the reining clinician last weekend too.

      • Thanks for the input on boots. Of course, I'm now totally confused about whether Justins run large or small.

        • Okay, Eileen, what was THAT all about? I went to a Planning Committee meeting for our series of horse shows and came home in a good mood - However, I sure have been to meetings where I felt like screaming after. What was the Erica Kane reference about? or maybe it's a private joke?

In the boot department, I bought a pair of Laredo brand (??) black ropers and a pair of Justin sand ropers that I only wear for riding so I expect them to last forever. Well, that's not exactly true, now that I think of it - I put a rhinestone boot bracelet on my black ones and used to wear them for western dancing somtimes. I've had the black ones since 1996 and they look like they'll last at least that much longer. The sand ones I bought in 2000 when I bought my sand chaps and needed boots to go with them. Last year, I was distressed to see that my aluminum stirrups made marks on my sand boots - I think I'll put some duct tape on the insides of the stirrups so that doesn't happen again! I need to get all my show stuff out soon and clean it all up, etc. After the last show of the season (which for me is October), I'm usually tired and don't even want to see a saddle for a few weeks, then winter sets in, etc., etc. So, that's how I justify it

          • I find that certain types of Justins kill my feet. Others, like the original laceups, are OK. Ariats kill my feet, no matter what. I literally am in agony the second I start to walk around. I like Olathes, and have several pairs of no-name boots. Abilene is the most comfortable for me.

I don't know if the boot sizes run large or small...but I can tell you that Ariat has too low a toe box (They rub on the TOPS of my toes) and too narrow a heel in women's. Some Justins, for some reason, make the muscles in the arch/inner ankle of my foot seize up.

            • Stasha,

I LOVE Abilene boots. Haven't had any for a while, but the pair I had were my most favorite (for comfort) boots of all time! Plus, they were pretty cheap when I bought them - I remember that because I was pretty poor at the time. And, they were a real pretty palomino color - I almost cried when they died.

              • Uggghhhh, Anne, you've been on the planning committees, you know what happens...." I'm the trainer and I'm on the committee, so lets get this rule changed to benefit ME !!!!"<hears Toby singing in the back ground>...that kinda stuff, we got through most of it unscathed, but the room really came to life when she went for her third rule change and wanted it her way, again( and tyhis meeting was 2 1/2 hours long)....it was the first time I have seen all the members of a committee band together to fiercely knock down a rule change...... poor woman didn't stand a chance on that one, ofcourse 1 of her other changes is going to cause point keeper kaos, if it passes BOD approval, then member ship approval.
My referance to Erica Kane is just that, soap opera stuff .maybe I could write one of those."As The Stall Door Turns"

                • Hey, if you guys want to start a Western forum, I have plenty 'o room on foalcams.com. I can set up an advert free message board, with a format similar to this one (not the running thread format that I personally find annoying and confusing).

                  Just an idea!

                  • Has anyone purchased the newest Randy Travis CD "Rise and Shine"?? Nice CD, gospel music with the single "Three Wooden Crosses" which is so moving.

Anyway, it includes a second DVD of some of the CD recording at the studio and Randy riding his buckskin/paint gelding at I guess his ranch and then at Don Imus's kids ranch. The gelding is a STOUT horse with very neat markings. At the end of the program there is a quick shot of him riding a chestnut doing some pivots. I really enjoyed seeing him with his horses- including some minis!

I just got 2 CDs on How to Rhinestone - woohoo!! I'm going to see how difficult it is. Then, if it's not too hard, I'm going to start putting them on everything I own!! Come on, all you rhinestone cowgirls!

                      • On the DVD he mentions that his favorite place is on the back of his horse. He said he does a lot of praying from that vantage. I liked that thought. He shares the character flaws he had growing up and blames no one but himself. That's refreshing. I don't know if he competes with his horses- I know George Strait does mega roping events. It's a nice CD. I'll use it for Sunday morning horse hauling- "Prayers on wheels."

Rhinestones eh??? Makes me think of the old Glenn Cambell song!

My youngest daughter needed a "zippy" shirt for the American Royal 4-H show a year ago. I found a design we liked off a mega-buck shirt on eBay then chatted with my seamstress friend on how to reproduce it easily. She had me use the "iron on" stuff to stick the decorative fabric on the shirt we bought at Casual Corner. For the clear beading I simply glued it on. It turned out nice!

                            • I just have to share... I sent my 3 year old to a trainer at the beginning of the month for some fine tuning and drove down yesterday to look into her progress. What a difference in only 2 weeks! Apparently, she picked up the spur stop in one day (lots of work still left to do there obviously) and has developed so much more cadence and balance in her trot. Best of all, the mare seems extremely content and relaxed in her stall and when she's being ridden.

I sent the horse to this woman because I knew she has had a lot of success but she has really exceeded my expectations. I'm going down again in three weeks and can't wait to see how the mare is doing then.

Has anybody else been "wowed" by a trainer?

                              • Now that Reining is FEI and with the good number of AQHA and APHA Hunters successful in Open competition I think it might be appropriate to add a Western Forum.

I've had everything from Arabs to QHs and ridden all three seats and more is the same then is different. Good horsemanship is just that whether the saddle has a horn or knee blocks.

I notice more and more posts here from AQHA and similar types and would like to think they enjoy the exchange of information on a BB somewhat more mature then most.

                                I vote YES.

And BTW-Ropers make great Paddock boots..cheaper then the so called "hunt seat" brands but they are just about the same.

We hate winter and cold as much as anybody else but if we don't get moisture soon (and lots of it!) we will be in for another drought - which is very bad for hay prices and availability. I've never seen it so dry out here and I've lived here since 1968. There were some drought years in the mid 1970s, but I wasn't buying hay then, so I thoroughly enjoyed it - hehe.
