Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Maybe I should try horsemanship. I'll have to have my trainer really get after me about my bad habits! Many years of trail riding only, due to my much loved trail sound only horse, have destroyed any semblance of proper riding position!

Actually never rode dressage, but have used some of their excercises and have the utmost respect for the responsiveness and communication levels they can accomplish, oh and I shouldn't forget to mention the physical abilities of the horse and rider as a team!!

EEK, don't tell the DQs how much I admire them, OK?

    • AAccckkkkkk sandbar, if you are showing at APHA shows, if you come to LIHS shows and do anything but colorbreed & halter classes, you'll have to show in the "open" division...<seguays into that rule change thing
Two years ago, the issue came up of someone riding in adult novice, and then going to an APHA show during the show season. Some committee members wanted to bump them up to open that same season, strip them of their current points, and in general be as unsportsmanlike as was ( IMOHO) humanely possible. Had to call out AQHA, APHA, PTHA POA and other rules, to bring to the point why would you want to stop someone from going to a breed show??? That is what local schooling shows are all about aren't they??? As opposed to some who think that the local schooling show is the beginning an end of the world, and can become very "Erica Caine-ish" in their desire to make things go their way.
Ahhhhhh sportsmanship, another hot topic on the western riding world

      • LIHS- EEEK! This is how it will be this season?! Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy...

Oh well, I guess April and I will have to suck it up and deal with it if that's the case, as my "plans" for the season include the Paintorama in NJ this year.

Well, in our area there is no fighting the: "As opposed to some who think that the local schooling show is the beginning an end of the world, and can become very "Erica Caine-ish" in their desire to make things go their way."

I think that "be all and end all attitude" must be related to how much of a PITA it is to trailer off LI and the fact that (until our paint club gets approval-hopefully in May), there are no approved breed shows on LI, that I know of. Oh and of course LIHS's beautiful prizes, I wouldn't mind having one!

For what it's worth, it's pervasive in all the local clubs. Poor Mr. SBH though, he's never shown before and has "plans" to show at both local shows and the APHA shows.

LOL at myself... reminds me of the first time I rode a real spin, except instead of crying I almost threw up! First mistake was not taking my leg off once he started spinning since he took my continued use of leg to mean spin faster, my second mistake was looking down . The dirt in the pen was just a blur below me and I thought I was going to meet it. His owner explained my mistake after I quit staggering after I got off

            • I have just stumbled upon this forum/BB and think it is wonderful. I do think that a western section of the board would be a great addition. I myself ride western pleasure along with dressage, hunter, etc.. I basically do everything I can so that when I get on a random horse I can at least get by in the way that it was trained.
And there are most certainly enough people that do ride western, or may be toying with the idea of riding western on their off season that it would be helpful to them to have an outlet

Hi Grubby, Sure do, it was actually a very good friend of mine. I doubt you would know Tanya, since she never did actually get to show her horse, and she's since sent him to Alberta to her dads to live until she can afford to bring him back. He's a son of Tuff Joe Sugar, who is owned by Rod & Carolyn Miller, formerly from the Ottawa area, now in Texas http://www.rocknberry.com/stallion.html . Eastern Ontario used to have alot of reiners than now, but their numbers have dwindled alot in the past few years, and the EORHA shut down quite a few years ago. The ones that are left have to do some hauling to go to shows.

I am always trying to think of ways to get new exhibitors to our shows. We do walk/jog JR & Sr, this year we are adding babies in hand 4 year old and under (if you show in hand, no under saddle classes for your horse that shows inhand, you can however go into model & showmanship), we added a versatility class, and fun classes (you never know what it is until after you are in the ring and the gate is closed
Any other ideas for attracting more riders to shows?

Just have to wonder why you don't allow folks that show line classes in the undersaddle classes?

What classes do you use in Versatility? The usual Versatility around here is start HUS, then switch to WP and then Barrels, though I have heard of Poles being done instead. I loved showing Versatility with my old gelding, he used to do Barrels with a grin on his face , Combination is fun too, under saddle, either Hunter or Western and Pleasure Driving, usually starting with the driving.

As for suggestions, I don't have any off the top of my head, but if anything comes to me, I'll let you know

                          • Has anybody else become a little obsessed with showmanship? After much nagging to get some expert input (apparently, it's a bad thing to be looking at your watch while you're waiting for the rest of the class to do their pattern), I started taking lessons and now I'm hooked. It's gone from pretty much being shoved into the show pen to me being the fussiest person around.

I'm loving that QH is now allowing pull turns of greater than 90 deg. (please follow along soon APHA). I teach all our guys to do 360+ pulls - even my nephew's 12 hand pony. I just couldn't resist with him. How cute is it to see a teeny little bay roan being handled by a young kid and then see the pony do all of the moves better than most horses. The little guy picked it up faster than any horse I've ever worked with too!

What are your favorite pattern elements? What would you like to see? What do you dread!

                            • Overo, Actually, there are NO rules regarding restricting pull turns in APHA, anything goes! So its good that your practicing those 360 pulls! I watched a couple patterns with 180 pulls last year.
I STINK STINK at Showmanship.. I will leave that class for those that DONT trip and fall over the cones during their patterns! (yes, I did it! *G*).

                                • Sorry, jvanrens, I should have made that clearer on the inhand classes....this year we are adding "babies in hand" ( 4 year old & under - lungeline/maybe trail). If you show your "baby" in these classes, you cannot show your "baby" in under saddle class as well. You can show your "baby" in color breed model & showmanship, and your regular division showmanship. Anyone who doesn't show in baby in lunge line class, can go into any under saddle classes they desire, as long as they follow other show rules/criteria

Just wanted to add my two cents worth. I grew up riding and showing hunters and jumpers, and I had a blast. It wasn't until I started seeing my boyfriend who rode Western that I really got a chance to try riding Western for real. We are now into Team Penning and Sorting competitively and we love it. I bought an awesome BS paint mare a couple of years ago that was shown in Working Cowhorse, so of course I had to give that a go. What a rush!

All I can say is if any of you get a chance to ride a "cowy" horse go for it. It is an incredible feeling, sort of like a clear round over four foot fences!

Last year we had 3 APHA/IBHA/PTHA judges and 1 USEQ, and some of the patterns were awesome, and quite challenging.Naturally, we had one "talker" judge (my first experience with one ), and I got so involved in the convo ( I know it's a trick they use) that I ended up being off sides. I swear it will never happen again !!! LOL !!!! We did 360's 90's 180's, BIG HUGE circles at the jog (keep clucking&lt;makes the tongue against roof of mouth sound&gt; to that mare as you go around !!!)
What colors do you guys think the ring will see this year.......I'm fascinated with the "ice blue" I'm seeing......keep watching Ebay for new stuff ....think it would look kinda nice on the BIG bay horse !!!

I STINK STINK at Showmanship.. I will leave that class for those that DONT trip and fall over the cones during their patterns! (yes, I did it! *G*).<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I checked the rule book and you're right - the words "should ... move the horse away" and "is acceptable to lead the horse toward them" don't seem to make pulls of greater than 90 illegal. Now all it takes is judges brave enough to include the tougher stuff in their patterns.

I've never tripped over the cones but I have had a gust of wind rip my hat from my head (it was glued to my forehead with extra hold hair spray) and hit the judge squarely in the face. Strangely, I didn't place that day.

I also had a gate come apart in my hand during a trail class. One minute I was closing the gate and the next it was off it's hinges. The ring steward and I just looked at each other because neither of us knew what to do. I ended up leaning way down and resting the gate against the standards. It seemed to be the correct response because we were 1st under 2 judges and placed high under the 3rd.
