I've visited the emergency room more than a few times with horse-related injuries and never been asked where/how the accident occured. Once I said anything remotely non-car related, they seemed pretty disinterested in the details?! I guess your mileage may vary!

Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I had similar trouble w/ my ins company after I broke my arm. It was an accident. But they were looking for someone to go after.
Happened after my CT surgery as well. I continued to get calls and letters trying to determine who they could go after. It was just a problem...no one's fault.A good horseman doesn't have to tell anyone...the horse already knows.
Might be a reason, never an excuse...

Not always -- I dreaded calling my insurance co. and having to explain how it was that the horse I owned spooked inside the barn and finished with crashing into the SUV I owned, causing literally thousands in damage to the car (definitely one of those times you didn't know whether to laugh or cryOriginally posted by Guin View PostInsurance companies suck.

When I finished explaining the situation, my State Farm agent said "were you or the horse hurt", and when I said no, they burst out laughing and said "good because that was the funniest thing we've heard in the office in a long time and I didn't want to laugh if anyone was hurt!" They paid my claim without any further questions and no hassle at all!

When I had owned my now retired horse only a week, I put on one of my old horse's blankets to check for size. When I fastened the surcingle, he lunged backwards at great speed, SAT on the trunk of a friend's Honda in the parking lot, then rolled off it and onto his back under the rear of the car. Despite such an over-reaction to the blanket, he lay there quietly, and we pulled his legs over and rolled him from under the car and he got up and just stood there. No damage to him, but a HUGE dent in the Honda. It turned out to be covered under my renter's policy, no questions asked. But when she took the car into the body shop to be fixed, they wondered how she had gotten such a big dent (entire trunk lid crushed) without a single actual SCRATCH on it. They did indeed fall over laughing when she told them a horse SAT on it.Originally posted by Madison View PostNot always -- I dreaded calling my insurance co. and having to explain how it was that the horse I owned spooked inside the barn and finished with crashing into the SUV I owned, causing literally thousands in damage to the car (definitely one of those times you didn't know whether to laugh or cry

I'm guessing it has never crossed mom's mind that you would get fed up and terminate the contract, your abusive relationship with her, nor the poor kids relationship with the horse...
She sounds like a narcissist, who never thinks of anyone or anybody but herself. It's time for her to grow up and learn her actions have consequences (but true narcissists never do, actually).

Definitely talk to a lawyer first. I am not in the "fire her" category as that could look like guilt. If she doesn't terminate the contract on her own, then that could be her admitting that there is not a problem with the horse, might work out in your favor.Every man has a right to his opinion, but no man has a right to be wrong in his facts.

needs someone to blame crowd
Does this parent think that like Johnny is the best rider since sliced bread and that the accident could not possibly be his fault??? - as accidents never happen... I am willing to bet that the tirades of this parent came after a show or some event that Johnny did not place as well as they think he should have and it is your fault or the horse's. I am a parent of a soccer and softball player as well as an "A" circuit rider. Weird people come to all hobbies and sports. I have seen this over and over with different people that don't want to trust the person they are paying, for their expertise and have a different opinion.
I don't think it is coming to a lawsuit perse, but best to cya with lawyer and fire the client as they are a major pain in the bum. Life is too short.

Fire them as clients and say NO if they beg to come back; no need for whackos like that.Originally posted by trainer Xalter View PostLooking for advice.
Client is very well off. They lease one of my horses. They have been leasing this horse for 2 and 1/2 years for their pre-teen son to lesson and horse show on.They have always been delighted with the horse and the arrangement.
Periodically, say every 4 months of so, the mrs. will get a bee in her bonnet about something and fly into a tantrum tirade, screaming, yelling, swearing, name calling, accusations, the works. I, being ever the professional, have always tried to talk her down off the ceiling, jump through 1000 hoops, get an ulcer, and "fix" it. 24-48hrs later she is done and acts like nothing happened.
They usually discuss matters with me via email, being fairly absent clients. They only come to the barn for lessons even though they lease. In their emails, they will ask about doing x,y,z and when I say "sure we can do x,y,z they say "we want to know why you haven't addressed this in the past if you think it's a good idea?" If I say no I think x,y,z is not something I want to impliment they will invariably push back and then demand x,y,z. Everytime I get an email from them my stomach sinks thinking what now??
Things have come to a head. Son and lease horse took a tumble. Lease horse tripped and fell during a lesson, son fell off and broke his collar bone. At first it was a routine situation, everyone agreeing it was a freak accident. Two days later they email me and request that the lease horse get a full vet work up before son ever rides it again. I say I believe this to be a freak accident and the horse is fine but if you'd like to pay for the vet check it's fine with me. I understand just being sure for piece of mind. Suddenly, seemingly because I agree they want to know why I haven't ordered this horse looked at prior. Now suddenly they insist this horse has always had a tripping problem and I haven't addressed it. I am perplexed and push back saying, in my opinion, this has never been an issue in the past.
Now, this horse has never had a tripping problem and they've never even questioned me about a "tripping problem" in the past and yet they insist he has had a long history of tripping. Again, they have leased him and the son lessoned on him for 2 and 1/2 years. I cannot recall any history of tripping or them asking about tripping or mentioning tripping or even refering to the horse with the nickname they now insist "everyone" knows him as "____ the tripper". I am baffled as to where this is coming from.
Fast forward, vet does a full work up including flexions and finds nothing wrong with the horse. They are not satisfied and request his printed records, which I agree to be released, why not? I have nothing to hide and if it will ease their minds so be it. In the process of reviewing records, vet finds out he has not given the horse his adequan in 5 months. Vet does automatic adequan injections on a list of horses ordered by me and billed direct to clients. Why this is not included in his records is beyond me. I order it monthly, I should say as a preventative.
Clients are now leaping on this and saying this caused the horse to fall and moreso, they blame ME for the horse not getting adequan. The mrs. SCREAMED at me for 30 minutes (litterally), hung up on me twice, never allowed me to speak, called me every name in the book, swearing cursing, F-bombing, spoke of me in such vile language I may never forget it. I sat there and let her do it, waiting for a chance to get a word in. I did call her back everytime she hung up. She never allowed me to speak past saying "I'm sorry you feel this way".
I should mention the horse is ridden by me regularily and showed no indication of any soreness anywhere ever that would have made me suspect something was wrong. Again, he passed his vet check with flying colors.
My husband calls these people emotional terrorists and says they are scapegoating me.
Now they want to watch me ride the horse, I said fine. And they want to vet check the horse again after I ride it.
At this point I think they are looking for more amunition to point fingers.
What would you do?

I don't think the whacko mama has any ulterior motive here. Based on what she does REGULARLY with NO provocation, the injuring of her son caused sadly predictable results.Periodically, say every 4 months of so, the mrs. will get a bee in her bonnet about something and fly into a tantrum tirade, screaming, yelling, swearing, name calling, accusations, the works

I had to undergo a rather intense interview with a health insurance company rep when a friend of mine was critically hurt. They were trying desperately to find a way that they could sue the barn owner or SOMEONE to recover her costs. It was lucky for everyone that she was kicked by her own horse - if it had been a different owner, the insurance company definitely would have sued and dragged us all into it.Originally posted by vxf111 View PostI've visited the emergency room more than a few times with horse-related injuries and never been asked where/how the accident occured. CYOA!
OP, please shut them down NOW, they sound exactly like the type of people who will smile at your face while they hire someone else to stab you in the back.
If they "forgive" you for this incident, there is no doubt in my mind they will find another to pin on you. People like this aren't always only looking for money - they enjoy being able to upset someone else's peace & happiness, it's a power trip for them.
Smile & say noncommittal polite thing whenever you cross them in person, deal with them in the future only in writing, and after having lawyers & friends review anything you send before you send it, and count your blessings for having them out of your life.
Good luck!
