Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Potential buyers are making me crazy (Formerly: Crazy guy from Ohio thread)

Reading through the posts and arriving at what I think is the subtext of this exchange, I feel like this guy feels his schedule should somehow pre-empt the seller. Not that there can't be a middle ground somewhere, but the feeling I get is that this man only values his own time and has no consideration at all for the seller. I don't know if he treats everyone that way or he's striving for some perceived upper hand because she is a woman, but I don't know if anyone has tried to get a horse sale to ride on "giving my word". That * might * work if said person was someone I knew well, but otherwise it applies an intimacy of sorts that simply does not exist and/or a reliance on a standard that is unfortunately pretty dead in this day and age. I'd be uncomfortable with both. This guy seems like a real nut...does he feel like a cowboy from the Old West because he wants to buy this horse? Because if so, I think if you can't dodge his figurative bullet you might take one, speaking metaphorically.
Give us an update when he shows up!

Hi! Yes, the tryout went well! They have tried out a few different horses so are thinking it over and will let me know. But he went well, the girl rode him quite well, and they loved his personality.

So just because I was curious how many times I told this dude that meeting on Saturday wouldn't work, I went back to see just how many times...
2/28
ME: March 20th would work for me. The 19th (which is a Saturday) will not work because I will be driving back to VT from PA with a friend.
3/1
HIM: I’ll make March 20th work early in the morning. Thanks
A few text messages back and forth for me to get info for the CVI that the horse will need to leave VT/enter other states. I was trying to get everything lined up so when he did come on the 20th, all that would be left was signing the registration papers over and completing a bill of sale, and exchange of money.
Since some time had gone by, I sent a message on Thursday, 3/10
ME: Are we still on for March 20th?
HIM: Can’t wait to try him. In your 2/28 text you said you will be driving from PA. Can I pay you extra to carry him to PA?
ME: No, we are driving to PA to meet up with other people and do not have time to have horse dealings. I am meeting a friend with two young kids and there is no wiggle room.
HIM: Can we at least meet Saturday afternoon/evening?
ME: No, sorry, I won’t be back until really late on Saturday. We are leaving PA Saturday morning. I can meet early morning Sunday the 20th which was our original date.
HIM: Surely it’s a lot closer for you driving back from PA. It will be late afternoon/early evening when you get back to VT.
ME: No. We will be stopping several times because of the baby. It’s going to be a 9 hour drive. It needs to be Sunday, that’s why I originally proposed the 20th.
HIM: Can your parents meet me at the school on Saturday?
ME: No. The 20th was the plan back on 3/1 that is what works for me. I can be at the barn early Sunday morning.
These messages were then followed by his persistence for me to guarantee my horse sound which I posted about earlier in the thread.
So, Friday I told him “I’ve thought this over and this sale is not going to work for me. Good luck in your search”
That is where I left you all off without any more updates…
His response: I’m just trying to make sure about soundness all typical questions by watching his videos. It appears we both are busy that weekend (YA THINK!?), babies are involved, and then it’s Easter. I’m just trying to be reasonable flexible, hoping you can do the same.
ME: It’s not going to happen. Best of luck finding your next horse.
HIM: Why?
HIM: What is wrong, I’m just getting ready to make a trip is all
HIM: I know this is hard for you
HIM: I’m only doing what you wanted which was to come try him. You said you didn’t want him to stay local to you. You also said you would like to see him doing something he was bred to do. Now you are making it hard on me.
That was all Friday afternoon/evening.
Saturday morning,
HIM: Please let me come try him on the 20th [now he wants to come on the date that works for me!]
HIM: Here is [his breeder’s] phone number, please call him
He wants me to call the breeder because they know each other so the breeder can serve as a reference for him.
So, the point of this was to count how many times I told him I couldn’t meet on Saturday.
Counting the original time, it looks like I had to tell him 5 times.
What a tool. At the very least, he can't read for comprehension, and at the most, he's a bully."If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple payments..."

Hey OP - a tip for future sales dealings: You are being too nice. You do not need to explain to anyone WHY a particular day/time/location will not work for you. Just say no, sorry, not available on Saturday, I am only available on X days in the morning/evening/whatever. You don't need to tell them why, it's not their business.
If they push for a reason, you can say personal business or something of that nature but giving personal info about your schedule (going on a trip, meeting friends, etc) might lead buyers to think you are "friends" that will "give their word" the horse is sound and make handshake deals. He sounds like a tool and I would bet you money he was planning to take your horse roping that next weekend!

Oh yes! There are people out there that want to talk you to death. By your 4th post I thought that is what you might have. Too many friggin communications, I'd ask him "geezus, are you buying the horse or not"? "If not lose my number."Originally posted by toady123 View PostYou need to be actively seeking other buyers for this horse. Bingo. Whenever you offer reasons for your "No,", in any situation, what you are actually saying is These are the problems I am asking you to solve, in order to change my "No" to a "YES". It's an invitation to negotiate. So always be clear in your own mind: "Do I want to open up a negotiation on this point or not?" If not, then the reasons for your response are completely irrelevant and should not be offered. The answer is simply No.Originally posted by Heinz 57 View PostHey OP - a tip for future sales dealings: You are being too nice. You might want to let the BO know that he still might try to show up, and that he is NOT to ride your horse. I once had a guy go to my trainer's barn UNANNOUNCED and UNACCOMPANIED to try out a horse I had for sale, with NO appointment on the table! It CAN happen! It's a worst case scenario but when you have a real pill kind of a buyer, you have to prepare for these sorts of things. It would not surprise me in the least.America dialed 911.
