Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I've worn mine. They're as high quality as any other nice button down shirt, lord knows we certainly SPEND enough on them.

I've also worn dry cleaned show coats. I mean, it's a $400 jacket.

So do it, wear them! Only one other girl in my office is horsey, she is actually a barrel racer but did hunters as a kid. She noticed it was a TS, but asked to borrow it.
see, the problem is that i work in a horsey office, and everyone would KNOW it's a show shirt. and then i'd just feel silly.

I was in a shoe store once wearing my old scuffed up paddock boots because we just come from the barn. A lady comes to me and says that she really likes my boots and how did I get them to look so authentic and natural? Haha...apparently they sell riding boots that look scuffed up so you can pretend you horse back ride?

Many years ago when I worked in an office in Manhattan, I'd wear my white ratcatcher with plain, velcro stock (unembroidered, but the kind the hunter princess wear, not the dressage queens) and a gorgeous old cameo I inherited from my grandmother. I always thought it looked lovely. No idea what anyone else ever thought.

Back in the 80's when I was a barn rat and only wore LL Bean boots, torn sweat shirts and what ever else was not falling apart I saw an add of a model wearing the same thing. Camp Beverly Hills made tons of money on the non-show wardrobe

It was high fashion to look like we do on the days when we are not showing and covered in whatever is most functional and worn for at least a decade.

All my suit coats are actually riding coats. Much nicer then real suit coats and warm and tough. If you don't look for the foxes on the buttons they are mistaken for custom made

Actually, I do wear my ratcatcher all the time, as casual wear. (I have an old one that I've had since I was 12, so it's smaller and I never show anymore, so why let it just hang in the closet?) Roll up the sleeves a bit, layer a tank top under it, and it looks really cute.

BOut 10 maybe 11 yrs ago I somehow managed to schedule myself to be in '2 places at the same time' or one place with just enough time if the first goes off as scheduled to make it to 2nd with bout 30 seconds to spare. One was in court to testify for someone and hte other on the back of a horse bout 45 mile from the court house.

Because I really didnt want to be at hte court house I figured id just dress for hte horse thing. I walk in with my boots( schooling non custom ones) really old britches, and a ratchatcher I had worn with I was a jr several ( like 6 or 7) yrs prior. The atty's on both sides, the clerk, and the lady who sits up front and does the notes( honestly can not recal hte title of hte person at this moment) before and after as I was trying to get out of the building stopped and asked where i got my outfit... imaigne their shock when I said shirt from 80-81 sometime, boots of rack at tack store, and only thing missing was green slime up back..

I must admit, I don't change after riding and sport my knee patch insulated Tuffriders on my way home to do errends. I suppose slobber and hair tell people I'm no fashion plate.

But I have this friend, a male model (not gay!); tall, gorgeous, long curly black hair, dark skinned hunk named DAVE (should be Romeo!) who spotted my horse catalogues stacked up in the bathroom. He came running out asking to borrow them because he wanted to order tall boots, breeches and shadbelly just because he likes the "look". I told him he could save a buck by buying used and he'd probably like them better anyway.
I was amazed at his reaction to "equestrian chic".

*Read this story with the knowledge that I'm not a minor.

At the end of the summer, I was gently persuaded by my family to join them in a pirate-themed LARP (Live Action Role Playing game) for a few days before returning to college. I therefore had about a day to come up with several days' worth of pirate outfits - these folks are HARD CORE about costuming - and I wasn't motivated enough to go out and buy anything.

So I packed some breeches, boots, blouses, and a funny hat. I got assigned the character of "Will", a young, effeminate lad making his way for the first time on a pirate ship. I sashayed around the event (think small-scale renaissance faire atmosphere - except pirates), making conversation and meeting new people. I thought my TS breeches and Ariats made for good pirate attire, especially on short notice.

Most of the other women involved were swanning about in tight corsets and the like, so I thought I was relatively safe from wandering eyes. Apparently not:

Male Scurvy Cur: "My, look at young Will's [physical features] in those tight pants! I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to [speak with him about life and buy him a drink]."

Female Swashbuckler: "Well, I certainly wouldn't."

                      MSC: "Why not?"

                      FS deadpans: "I'm her mother."

MSC (I'm told) turned beet-red and slunk away swiftly. Who knew riding dress was so provocative?

So it's not OK to wear my old ratcatchers (sans choker) to work?
Under a vest or blazer who knows they were last worn at a barn?

FWIW, I've also worn my huntcoats as blazers - very flattering, that little nipped-in waistline...

I've also worn my riding jeans to work on Casual Friday - along with paddock boots.

And my dress boots work just as well for Fall - under a long skirt they look positively fashionable!

Until I win the lottery, my formal (and not so) riding wear will just have to double as work clothes.

I must admit here that I got so distracted wondering why this character, who has never previously been noted as a rider, was wandering through the episode in breeches and boots that I missed a lot of what was going on

I've worn ratcatchers into work before. We're pretty business casual, so in the winter I mostly wear sweaters or button downs. I've put ratcatchers under sweaters, without the collars done up, and gotten plenty of compliments on them. Actually, I had a conversation at the tack store last weekend with the saleswoman about people who came in to buy show shirts specifically to wear to work!

DD and I were at the mall earlier this week.

We saw some anorexic looking mid 40ish female who thought she looked good in her "english riding apparel" OMG the boots looked terrible. There must have been a 3 inch gap around her knees...

and her walking ....well lets say she walked like they wer new boots and giving her blisters...

I have actually thought about wearing my show shirt and jacket for presentations (unfortunately for me, my presentations in college have to be fully "dressed up" business-type of presentations) because they look absolutely gorgeous together. Now, I might actually do this!

The barn that I ride at is only about 5 minutes from the mall, which is an hour from my house. Needless to say, I do a lot of shopping in my riding clothes!

I was at the perfume counter in Macy's the other day, wearing Ariat field boots, side-zip breeches, and a hoodie. The woman behind the counter, an older lady dressed in head-to-toe designer wear, approaches me:

Her: "Wow, I LOVE your outfit!"
Me: "Oh thanks, I was just out riding."
Her: (and I still can't believe she needed this clarification) "Riding what?"
                                          Me: (definitely confused) "A horse?"
                                          Her: "Oh!"

I was making a valiant effort not to laugh at this point.
