Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    Well, that's one...

I've been watching Abeam run. Unlike his photo, he is really lovely. Plus he goes to the post and into the gate in a calm and mannerly fashion. He just doesn't run very fast.
    Lovely, lovely...

Abeam really needs to get off the track. It's starting to take its toll on him. You're right; he's stunning. Funnily enough, that's how we ended up taking his listing in the first place. I had noticed him in the post parade, and while we were listing another horse for his trainer, I asked him about Abeam, commenting that he'd caught my eye. His trainer said, "Actually, I'd like to sell him too"...voila!

We saw Big Bonus just today, in fact - he was walking calmly (and very soundly, I might add) out on the walking machine. I am not aware of any issues, and he has a very levelheaded disposition; but feel free to PT if you have any other questions. Today his trainer said he would take $1500 for Big Bonus.

As a reminder, we will be at the track from 8 AM-12 noon tomorrow, and every Saturday through Nov. 21 after that; and you can call the trainer of any horse you're interested in if you'd like to see the horse any other time.

If you are at all thinking of buying a Suffolk Downs OTTB, please, please act fast - trainers are already shipping out for the winter! Thank you.

Is there any general rule as to which track(s) most of them ship out *to*??

Some will go to local farms, others typically go to Beulah in Ohio or Tampa Bay Downs in FL. Some, the trainers do not want to pay to ship anywhere (those are the ones we worry about).

Come to Pass is a hunk! As a matter of fact, a buyer who was at Suffolk today was really impressed by him (he's on her long list to whittle down, so he is nowhere near sold yet). He jogged out beautifully. He is really handsome and is in great physical shape: good weight, dappled out, muscle in all the right places.

He will make all sorts of nasty faces at people, pin his ears and sometimes nip, but it's all a show; he never connects on the nips, never tries to kick, etc. His trainer said he really calms down away from the track. His price now is $2000. Please feel free to PT if you have any other questions.

Heading out the door so this will be quick, but: both are very cute. Nice dispositions - Dankee is a little more spirited but she is still a good girl.

Day of the Hunt, as his name suggests, seems very much a hunter type. Dankee is a TALL young filly and will be really stunning when she fills into her frame. I have not seen either jogged out, but neither has any visible problems - trainers state both are sound and have no issues except a distinct lack of high velocity on the track

I believe Buck and Wing has a few buyers already lined up and waiting for her to finish racing, but you can call her trainer and ask! Talk Subordination is sold (Doublete, correct me if I'm wrong). Monet's Choice's trainer hasn't decided if he wants to sell him or ship him to Florida and race him over the winter.

If you have questions about any other horses, please PT me, or better yet, make an appointment to come to Suffolk next Saturday - we'll still have plenty to show you!

Update on our special sale weekend:

We had a decent turnout at Suffolk this weekend, although yesterday's rotten weather (freezing cold and SNOW in OCTOBER!) really hampered our efforts. I am happy to report that the following horses have been sold:

                                      992. Allondra (many thanks to Drew from COTH who, along with his girlfriend, made sure this mare <who has run more than 80 times> would be safe)
                                      1045. Mass Pallet
                                      1056. Suavefancynfast
                                      1080. Brief Indulgence
                                      1136. Sweetener

However, lots more are still available, and we took some new listings that are now up on the site.

I want to make a special plea for one horse on our listings who is absolutely miserable and really, really needs to find a home. His name is Ninety Second K O, and he is a very cute, 15.2 hand 4-year-old chestnut with lots of chrome. He has no evident soundness issues - he's just in, frankly, very rough shape right now. His owner stiffed the trainer on the bills; trainer can barely afford to keep feeding the horse, let alone keep him in optimal condition. Poor Ninety Second is looking pretty ribby, dirty and has an unfortunate sore on his neck from a cribbing strap pulled too tight...so he is not looking his best, in any way, shape or form.

Ninety Second K O also is a ridgling (meaning one testicle never descended, but is still in the abdominal cavity), so he can be a bit studdish when mares are nearby, but for him, "studdish" seems to mean "talking a lot to the ladies!" He is a sweet and gentle boy with very good manners otherwise.

All the CANTER volunteers wholeheartedly agree that under that TLC-starved exterior is a really flashy, attractive and promising little horse who should be able to do just about anything, be it show or pleasure. Ninety Second K O's trainer had been asking $1000 for him, but now says "the first person who makes me an offer can have him." He can probably be purchased for $500. Please, if you have room in your barn and a need for a project who will require some elbow grease, kindness and weight, but will pay you back in spades - consider buying this little guy! His trainer, David, can be reached at 508-353-4357. Must sell soon.

OTHER HORSES WHOSE TRAINERS TOLD US "MUST SELL":
(#s correspond to their listing on our site)

1011. Abeam - all reasonable offers considered

1017. Volcanic Hill - $500 - trainer (who is a very honest guy) wants to emphasize that while he has some arthritis in his knees and is not a jumping prospect, this is a great horse to ride - even goes like a dream in just a halter and lead rope!

1036. Judith's Mission - all reasonable offers considered

1054. Florida Forum - make an offer

                                      1061. I'm Listening - make an offer

1069. Outta the Blue - all reasonable offers considered

                                      1104. Uno Passer - $500 OBO

1108. Coyote Rose Bud - make a reasonable offer; must sell (can be seen on the farm south of Boston)

1113. Mystery Water - will need some time for his hoof injury

1123. Star of Colleen L - trainer emphasized she will not let anything bad happen to this mare, but wants to see her go to a good home as a broodmare/companion; will take even "a couple of hundred" as long as "it's the right kind of person"

1127. R D's Girl - this is a SWEET mare who not only has earned close to $90K herself; her mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother have all produced stakes-caliber horses. She is a beautifully bred mare with a lovely disposition. MAKE AN OFFER, must sell soon.

**Please PT me or e-mail canterne@canterusa.org if you would like more information about any of the horses on our site. Thank you so much.**

For all those that like the flaxen mane/tail on Buck & Wing, Mike Collins listed a little filly who is very cute and who has much the same coloring: Pitching the Dream

1125. Pitching the Dream, Chestnut mare, flaxen mane/tail, 15.2hH, 5 yo
The unusual coloring on this mare makes her quite the eye catcher! She needs to fill out a bit, but this girl would be striking in the show ring. Trainer says no soundness issues, just no talent. Price is $2500 negotiable. Contact Mike Collins at 508-345-4400

                                          Check out her picture: http://www.canterusa.org/newengland/sale/images-salehor...ng%20the%20Dream.jpg

She needs weight, but she would be really cute when muscled up and at her ideal weight. She also have a lovely, inquisitive expression--alert, but not spooky.
