Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Thanks for the corrections, Sing Mia Song. We're most often doing these listings without papers and I'm sure that there are a few out there that are not quite right. I'll email and make sure that these two are fixed tonight.

Let me check on Hay Mr. Brassman. I haven't seen that trainer in a while, and the information may be outdated. I do remember that he was one of those nice, kind and people oriented geldings that everyone love.

Louise, that would be great. I'm sending you a PT as well.

Louise and other Canter ppl from NE:

Here's a question I'm not sure how to ask.... It seems as though whenever a poster asks about a horse, we are told it is really nice.... are they ALL nice, or are we just picking the good ones... in otherwords, would you tell us if we were looking at a snarky one, or one w/poor conformation? I assume yes, but was just wondering.....

Good question, Regent. I think I can speak for the Finger Lakes crew, as well as CANTER NE and the other CANTER folks, in saying we will NOT *ever* lie or misrepresent anything we know about a horse. They all have their good points, and we'll obviously be thrilled to share those with you, because we love these horses!

"Poor conformation" can sometimes be in the eye of the beholder. (and a horse can look a heck of a lot different with some weight and muscle development, too - heck, a horse can look a lot different in person than in the picture taken in the rain, with flies bothering the horse, with a groom not really paying attention...you get the idea). So can degrees of "hotness," optimal movement, and so on. What's ugly to someone can be beautiful to someone else; what's "bratty" to one buyer can be desirably "on his toes" to another, etc.

We are not vets (insert standard CANTER reminder: we always recommend a vet check!) and we are not official representatives for these horses, so we won't tell you what you SHOULD be looking for and what you SHOULD be buying. Our purpose is to introduce these horses to potential buyers. We are not involved in the actual decision-making process about which horse you should buy, and we try to stay impartial and let *you* make that crucial decision. We all have our favorite horses, sure, but we're not the ones buying, and we always strive never to push one horse over another.

However, if we know something particular about a soundness issue, temperament problem, etc., we absolutely will tell you about it. That's why we ask people to please PT us if you have questions about a specific horse.

(Not that you should assume a response of "PT me" means the horse has anything wrong with him or her! I like to answer questions about individual horses, whether I have good or not so good things to report about them, in PTs, so I don't feel like I'm monopolizing an entire thread discussing a single horse.)

That's a good question, RegentLion. I can only give you an answer from a "me" point of view.

Since I started this, I have been amazed at the quality of horse I am seeing at Finger Lakes. Most of them are handsome animals, with more than a few being drop dead gorgeous. That being said, I am the first to admit that I am not a conformation expert. I tend to look a horse as a whole, not as a sum of its parts. Ask me about the slope of a shoulder, length of pastern or angle of hip, and I'm not likely to be able to give you a technically correct answer. My answer is usally that the horse "looks" right. And, sometimes looks don't even tell the story. In my personal experience, one of the most plug ugly horses I ever saw in my life had three good gaits and a total "I can do this attitude."

Temperment is a trickier thing. We see these horses for maybe five minutes. It is often very hard to get a really good idea of a horse's temperment in that short a time. We get a feel for how easy they are to lead, and how well they stand still for a picture. That is another area where I, as a newby around the track, have been really surprised at how mannerly most of these horses are. They are young, they are incredibly fit and they are fed large amounts of high energy foods, yet you see very little in the way of misbehaving.

So, as far as my impression goes, I'm telling the truth when I say that I think that the horse is nice. Its the way that I honestly feel, but I'm alway willing to admit that a more experienced horseperson than myself might find many more faults with a horse than I do. I hope that answers your questions.

**edited to say that I like 17handtb's answer better.

I think most racehorses have pretty decent behavior, for the most part better than a home-raised horse who has been doted on and spoiled.

Thanks 17handtb and Louise. I was very afraid that the question would come off wrong or inflamatory.

I'm the same way as you, Louise, about conformation. I think a horse "looks right" or doesn't look right.... Although I can see glaring faults. People can, of course, point out a too sloping shoulder, neck tied in wrong, etc., and then i'll see it, but I hardly ever see the finer points myself.

I'm glad to hear that you guys do give honest opinions, although truthfully I didn't doubt it... I figured that if there was some big issue you'd disclose it, while highlighting the good points!

And of course, temperment/willingness can compensate for many "faults," and beauty is DEFINATELY in the eye of the beholder.

I'd like to add too, a note of thanks to you guys and the CANTER people who helped me last October around this time make the decision to travel out to Boston to pick up an OTTB mare who I just Love! I need to get some pics of her to share!

I can tell you that Louise has a better eye than she's admitting to! The FL horse that my friend bought and that was briefly in my barn before moving on to begin her life as a broodmare was nicely put together and had nice manners -- she was everything that the trainer and Louise had said/thought she would be.

I, too, have been a bit surprised at the overall niceness of the horses that I've seen on the FL Exceller Fund site. There must be a good track farrier in the area, because while some have feet that aren't perfect, I've been surprised at how good many of their feet look.

Something that Twisty's trainer told me upfront and very willingly -- the track at FL can be really hard. If they have been racing there and have stayed sound, there is a good chance that they'll stay sound for what we would want to use them for -- on the other side of that, I would think that the fact that one of them had a problem crop up wouldn't mean that they couldn't stay sound as a sporthorse. The trainer was very definite about how tough the track was on the horses. Interesting.

In any event -- good for you guys that are shopping!! I've not gone and looked since I'm full now, but it is hard not to . . .

Just to add to what Bensmom brought up, today I was told that the track had been added to and somewhat reconditioned this summer, so that it is not so hard. I have acquired four older geldings from FL over the years who all had many starts, and I second the notion that if they have held up to a racing career, then they are some tough horseys. There will be about 8 new listings in the next day or two. Thanks for your support of the Finger Lakes horses.

After looking at the latest listings I feel the need to give this a bump.
There are several good looking beasties listed for really low prices. It's a good thing I'm not closer or I would be divorced and in the poor house with lots of OTTB's.
Now, in addition to hoping Go See Michelle (what a kind eye!) finds a good home, I have to watch Miners Road, Kingsboro Sword, Sage Field, and my new fav. guy - Hide Song.
                                  Y'all ain't right!

Beastie Slave - I am right there with you in watching Hide Song, and especially Kingsboro Sword and Miners Road. The last two really need to move fast as the trainer didn't even know if he would still be at FL for the sale on the 12th and 13th of November. He is very negotiable because his racing season has about wrapped up for this year.
