Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Can I get your opinions on "Having a Fun Run"'s injuries? I am looking for pleasure/trail work only but don't know what kind of physical rehab/rest he needs or what possible limitations he may have for the future. Any help would be much appreciated...thanks in advance!

    • Beastie..dont be jealous of me in any way shape or form. Today its cold, rainy and windy and I had to clean 35 stalls, feed everyone and still have to run out to get grain from 2 different feed stores since I feed 9 kinds of grain. I love my "job".

Lonewolf I sent you a PT

      • Maybe we could trade for a while?
It's going to be in the 80's and beautiful here today. I'm stuck at the desk for at least another hour. Maybe the grass is always greener, but I think cleaning stalls would be a welcome break today. I'm going to the feed store when I leave (went to the other one yesterday) so I'm already with you there.

I think I'm going to give myself a half day off Thursday. I'm gonna load up the $70 blind in one eye super appy and take her to fernie fox (only 2 hours each way)! Hopefully they will have a large time following the hunt this weekend and another spot will open in my pastures

Darn old COTH was so slow today! Let's see if I can answer some questions for those who have asked.

Unfortunately, all I know about Shirl's Halo is what was written in the description. The trainer sent the picture and a little about her to us, and we posted it. I can tell you this, the trainer who has this horse is a nice person, who always has nice horses.

I also can't tell you much about Having a Fun Run. He belongs to the other organization that is co-sponsoring the sale, the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program. If you call, you can ask the vet who runs the program about his injuries.

It's hard for me to just single out a few of these horses as nice, quiet hunters. The all seem so lovely and kind to me, in the brief time I have seen them. I like Cobashack, Flag Tower, Distant Kid, Alicia's Quick Draw, for starters. But, heck, I like them all.

          • As a hunter person, I'd suggest Alicia's Quick Draw, he seemed extraordnarily quiet. Friend Rick is on the small side but should grow some. His conformation though is just stunning, his pedigree shows athleticism and his personality was adorable. I like the looks of Strausberg but I haven't met him personally. Finally, I love the look of Sultry Firm but I'd need to understand the weak hind end comment and what exactly is going on in the knee.

There's more and I could go on but those are the first I'd take a look at.

            • Tell me what you all think here...

My father manages a small upstate NY talk radio station. In talking to him today and discussing the Finger Lake sale, he expressed his want to support the No Slaughter/Rescue cause. Both my mom and I have done reporting/remotes for the station on the side so we have our press passes we'll be bring with us on Sunday. My father will sponser public awareness on the issue on air as well as produce and air "commercials" for the rescue organizations involved (no charge for any of this). We also have a talk show host in the mornings (who also does national) who would conduct interviews on air as a favor to us to further the word on the horses plight and alternatives to slaughter. Unfortunately, it is too short notice to put this together before Sunday but I will be interviewing and taking notes for anything in the future (say a month or so from now.)

My family and I want to help in any way possible and although we don't have a lot of money or own a farm, we do have other resources and contacts that may be able to help.

If anyone has ideas or know who may be interested in providing the necessary info to produce this or be interviewed on air, including volunteers, please let me know.
              Thanks!

And solidly built. I almost snatched him and then tried to get a client to buy him, but alas, I'm a mare person, and my client is having a life crisis.

                  • Does anyone have any more pics or know more about Alicias Quick Draw. I am really interested. The problem is that I am not really comfortable buying sight unseen, and I am not able to get to the sale. Any words of wisdom or advice?

I can probably dig up more pictures of Alicia's Quick Draw, that I took when I took the pictures that are up. They will be very similar, and not as good as those, but I'll be glad to send them along if you want to PT me with an email address. It won't be until tonight.

All I can say is that I know both Lexus and Silly Mommy, and that they are both very experienced horsewomen, and both are in hunters. The fact that both of them speak highly of this horse is a definite plus.

There will be a vet at the sale. If you decide to buy, he can always check the horse for you. In fact, we always strongly advise that any of these horses be vet checked. His information is on the Exceller site here. Go down the page to the red sentance about the sale and click on it. You will find much useful information.

You always are taking a risk, when you buy a horse sight unseen. But then, aren't you taking a risk when you buy any horse? You never know what is going to happen to these often delicate creatures.

Two more days until the sale! Be sure to take a good long look at all the lovely horses available. Those of you who can't come please consider buying sight unseen. There will be a vet available on Sunday for vet checks, his contact information is on the Exceller site . Just click on the red sentance in the middle of the page about the sale. Today will be the last day that you can contact him to set up an appointment for Sunday.

                          • Beastie, Louise and others. Well sitting on my hands here but I will be there on Sunday. Have my list down to 3 mares and will bring ONE home. I am looking for the most banged up, battle scarred, mean, orniest one I can find.

I would also like to offer a place for someone to layover a horse if you are buying from out of state, I can pick up your horse, bring it here and help arrange transport. I will be shuttling between the track about 5 times between now and the end of the meet.

                              • Norcrest, be careful what you offer I have put my name in as a sort of last resort buyer. Which means that I may also end up with a banged-up beastie. Of course, I have a long list of horses who have caught my eye or touched my heart, but I hope they all find loving homes and don't need me. I'll be checking the computer and my phone looking for updates from you guys.

                                • I had a dream that Big Time Flyer got adopted last night, but when I checked in this morning he was still listed. I wish I could make it work and bring this guy home - but even if I could afford board theres long waiting lists on the two local stables I could keep him at.

I really hope this weekend goes well and they find homes for many of these great horses.. there are so many!

                                  • Luvinfoofy....I think your dream will come true on Sunday when Ale sees him. She is determined to bring him home, although she has a few others on her list as well. Then I can go visit him too!
MissBri...Shirls Halo is on my short list so if noone gets her this weekend.hmmmm she could be living here shortly.
Beastie...I swear I am going to take you up on your previous offer to trade for awhile. I will happily live in 80 degree temps if you dont mind cleaning stalls in the 40's and rain! If I had someone helping me, there would be another barn up and more little girls living here!
