Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

We had the threat of freezing rain yesterday so horses were in all day and then had freezing rain all last night. So my horses have been in for 2 days and they are not loving it. This morning the mini made a break for it while I was cleaning her stall. Thank goodness that I had the doors all closed. It took me 10 minutes to catch the little sh!t Who knew that it would be so hard to catch a mini in a 5 stall barn with narrow aisles? I couldn't manage to get her cornered and there was no way she was voluntarily going back in her stall Good thing she is cute

But all things considering, it hasn't been too bad. The worst problem I have had is having to carry buckets because my hose was frozen. Lucky for me the pipes were fine I really hope the ground is good tomorrow because they need to get out.

Pintopiaffe - Richmond is about 1 hr east of me, same distance south of Lex. I imagine your friend is in the same situation I am. No one is able to handle this kind of weather - ice is just too devistating. DLee's account of driving is spot on. Very eerie.

Luckily, the main st of my town had power, so we were able to get more gas. Suprisingly the fried chicken drive through was open!

It amazing how quickly one can figure out how to do things without electricity. For dinner we had pot roast, mashed potatoes, corn and fresh biscuits. The generator can run the crock pot and I can boil water really quickly over a roaring fire. Push away the wood and on a covered cast iron skillet you can make biscuits.

However, my generator CANNOT run the vacuum.

Lots of ice here, I haven't gotten out to the barn since monday. I had to work yesterday and couldn't get my car up the driveway today

My poor dog's hind end went out from under him about 5 times this morning until he got used to the ice. It tooks him about 3 minutes to go up the driveway instead of the 3 seconds it normally takes him to spint up it. And then on the way down he slid, tried to slam the brake on and slid on his butt all the way down to me. Funniest thing I have ever seen in my life!

Well, FC, I'm glad I wasn't the only one with the reaction to the hard to walk to the barn ice and trees falling all over. We have all the trees at the end of the pastures by the creek and crashes all night. And DL, some of the college kids opted to turn their horses back out tonight, but I said Dublin wasn't going out and so the lady helping with the barn - with me - while the BM is out of town agreed to leave them in. I wish we'd get some sun and warmth. I know we'll have some flooding, hopefully not much, but I'd prefer slush in the pastures that doesn't refreeze. In that respect, I don't know when the horses are getting out. The ones not used to being in are sure making messes! Well, guess they all are!

tmo--thanks for the update. I did get voicemail from her, she's hanging in so far. She lost a horse to colic during an ice storm last year, so is a little PTSD...

Up he'ah it just turned to sneet and frizzle. Teletype says it's coming down 1-2" per hour. We had a barn collapse, but thankfully just storage. We didn't know when it came in. It's slicker n' snot on a doorknob as they say up he'ah.

Mother Nature sure is pissed about something this year.

Update - day 3 of the ice storm
Somehow there are no backup generators for Mercer county water company. Other counties shipped them in overnight, but not mine! Horses have water in troughs for now. I have the bathtub filled so we can use it to wash and flush toilets. I washed my hair before we lost all water pressure - no hot water, so I would guess the water was about 40 degrees - COLD! Of course, no hairdryer, but at least I felt cleaner.

We are trying to maintain civilization - but will struggle soon if we don't get power and/or water. Supposedly Obama has granted us federal emergency funds and the National Guard is here helping.

DH inspected the fences this morning - no major damage, but lots of limbs down over fences which will need to be removed. Guess I'll learn how to use the chainsaw!

                Stay safe everyone.

Just another winter storm here in CT. We're all used to it by now. Went to work in the middle of it. By the afternoon the ice got ugly as it would normally. 2 inches of glare ice on all roads. people just dont understand that you should not be trying to go out to dinner or anything like that. many car roll overs and pile-ups.

People just needs to learn to stay off the roads when theres that much ice them and wait for crews to clear it. I drive a 4WD vehicle so im pretty good in snow and slush and pretty good on ice too as long as im in no rush to go somewheres

                    *raising hand*

Lost power on Tue. night. Still don't have it (I'm at work). Early dismissal on Tue. and no work yesterday and late arrival this AM.

Hubby and I have given up and are headed to a hotel tonight w/ dogs in tow (found the last place near us that will take pets). After 2 nights of freezing my @ss off, I said enough. It was 45 degrees in my house this AM.

Booked for 5 nights. They are saying it could be 7-10 days to restore power to everyone in our area. But thankfully, we are closer in so we are hoping it will be sooner rather than later for us. If not, we can either extend the hotel if needed and able, if that's a no-go my friend has offered her house for us to bunk up with them... dogs and all ~!!!

I just want heat, hot water and lights. That's not asking for too much, is it???

We've gotten a total of 1 inch of ice and about 6-8 inches of snow from Monday night into Wednesday morning. They say there are over 200,000 customers w/o power just in the Louisville area. *sigh* Second worse power outage in history... right behind the remnants of Ike back in Sept.

I haven't seen my horse since Monday. And probably won't get out there until tomorrow night at the earliest. But I spoke to the BM on Tuesday and she'll call if anything is wrong. So no news is good news there.

Nooooo! It's snowing AGAIN!! Stop, stop!

I'm in northern Vermont. The good news is, no freezing rain here this time. I would rather have a foot of snow than an inch of ice. At least, that's what I keep reminding myself while I'm shoveling.
"Uh, if you're going to try that, shouldn't you unplug it first?"

Hey, LSM, I'm outside of Midway, so halfway between Lexington and Frankfort. I had a couple of inches of ice on my windshield. Still do. Can't get outta here to go to work. But I've seen plenty of my horse since I live at (not in) the barn. I've seen them all! We just turned them out a bit ago. Rears and wheels and all seem to be having no problem with it. It's terribly slick around the barn, but pastures are better. This driveway, well, I'm uphill and the trees are bending over on it and the road it dead ends into. I just can't safely get to the cleared roads. I remember 2003. If you're back on a farm, you don't realize the regular world is still going on! I have washed my hair every day and washed clothes, etc., everything I'd take for granted if I didn't have power. I'm very thankful because I've seemed to always lose it before. Still might, but at least the horses are okay, had their buckets plugged in, and I saw Lost. Yay! I couldn't afford a hotel and couldn't get there anyway.

Hey, isn't it the truth that you think your horses white is looking pretty decent until you see it next to SNOW! Dah!
