Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • NO - I don't think Kerry was the "people's president." In fact, I thought Kerry was only marginally better than W. But his policies alligned more with my beliefs. I am not a Democrate - I am an ISSUES FOCUSED INDEPENDENT.

I will support Bush again - there's no sense fighting against the establishment in this case. But I can still be saddened by what I believe this means for our country. I do hope I am wrong. It's been known to happen

    • mmagnolia - i agree with you there - you can find something in any religion or read into anything - and I agree that the true muslim religion (and I don't know much about it) is NOT what the radicals believe. the "kill americans get a virgin" BUT I think our screners should:

      1. be more well trained in reading people - whchich involves profiling.

      2. Be free of worrying about the consequences of stopping someone who looks suspicious and is muslim. If mid-20 curly haired females were killling americans, I would understand the need to do this.

      • Flycather - I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I didn't really pay much attention back then.

And I apologize, I was referring to the terrorists who were on the planes that flew into the WTC and Pentagon.
I would like to think I will die an heroic death...

But it's more likely I'll trip over my dog and choke on a spoonful of frosting.

Oh, give me a break! You have not lost any civil liberties in the last four years and you know it. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Wow. I don't know where to start.

Have you travelled by air in the past 4 years? I frequently travel for business and nearly always in 1st class. My last name is Perez. Due to profiling of Phillipino terrorists, on 90% of my flights, I am pulled for additional search going through security and IN EVERY INSTANCE when we have had "random" luggage searches and pat-downs prior to boarding the plane, I have been selected. My boarding passes frequently have coded with yellow or orange strips that alert security and airline personnel that I am in a "high risk" category. Before you start point the "paranoid" finger, my business colleagues with whom I travel have pointed this out to me without my mentioning it to them and my children, who have a different last name, have also pointed out to me that I get pulled every time and they never do. Erosion of civil liberties...as in freedom to travel wherever and whenever I wish with out hassle...hell yes.

Don't even get me started in Guantanamo Bay and the scores of prisoners who have been held there for years without legal representation because they are "terrorist suspects."

Under the U.S. Patriot act, U.S. librarians and book store owners are required to turn over lists of borrowers and purchasers of certain books when asked. No, this has not been used to my knowledge, but the implication is truly frightening.

Also under the U.S. Patriot act guidelines, my bank frequently holds my consulting checks for over 15 business days to ensure I am not laundering money for foreign regimes or terrorists. I absolutely consider denying access TO MY OWN MONEY for up to three weeks an erosion of civil liberties.

What rock have you been hiding under?

                <span class="ev_code_PURPLE">Yup. </span>

Profile others who look shifty. Who look uncomfortable. Keep doing the random stuff because an 80 y/o grandmother could very well have a bomb strapped to her - or a small child. I'm all for it. But at least be allowed to profile some, use some of your judgment. There was a statement during the 9/11 commission (yes, I read the report) that the hijacker that got sent back almost was allowed to continue, because a co-worker told the customs inspector "you can't hold him. he's muslim. we'll get in trouble." and the customs inspector hell and high water said the guy was suspicious. Perhaps because he didn't get through the passengers on the united flight were able to stop the hijackers before they did who-knows-what

<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">Thank God for people who stand up for themselves at the risk of "getting into trouble". </span>

As for Cat Stevens, perform for a group known to sympathize, don't come back to the states or at least receive heavy scrutiny for doing so. I told my cousin just as much (she's in turkey on a federal grant, sending us e-mails about how much she hates Americans. Hate Americans? fine. Stay there. And give back your federal money while you're at it) <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">So nice to hear that someone sucking on the federal teat is so grateful. And kudos to you for your response to her. </span>

                    • Okay Simkie and Vandy, If the Patriot Act iin your eyes is such a horrible thing, explain this.

Taken directly from the Patriot Act.

"(b) SENSE OF CONGRESS- It is the sense of Congress that--
                      (1) the civil rights and civil liberties of all Americans, including Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, and Americans from South Asia, must be protected, and that every effort must be taken to preserve their safety;
                      (2) any acts of violence or discrimination against any Americans be condemned; and
                      (3) the Nation is called upon to recognize the patriotism of fellow citizens from all ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds."

                      Or this...
"`(6) LIMITATION ON INDEFINITE DETENTION- An alien detained solely under paragraph (1) who has not been removed under section 241(a)(1)(A), and whose removal is unlikely in the reasonably foreseeable future, may be detained for additional periods of up to six months only if the release of the alien will threaten the national security of the United States or the safety of the community or any person."

                                    • You know what? the fact that Bush MAY be our leader for the next four years positively sickens me.

But, I would like to point out to everybody on this board, that none of this outcome is official. There are million of absentee ballots and provisional ballots that remain uncounted and can remain uncounter for up to 10 more days.

I am horrified that the people of the nation were willing to reelect an individual who has ruined our economy, and is sacrificing thousands of American lives (and those of Iraqis) for the sake of avenging Daddy's cause.

It's disgusing to me that Americans would stand up for the civil rights violations that have already occured and the multitude more that stand to occur in the years to come. And to think what damage will be done when Bush gets to chose 4 new Supreme Court Justices.

I am appalled that it is very possible that my rights to my body and my way of life may be in jeopardy from this outcome. To know that any of that is in the hands of someone like Bush, and that the majority of this country believes that is right and just...well, it's beyond words. As of today, women's rights for every woman, nationwide, stand to disappear completely. And for what? "Moral Values?" what about MY moral values? I can see they no longer matter with this pseudo-religious Republican presidency again in place.

I am just wholeheartedly sick about the whole thing.

You are welcome to your beliefs, as I am to mine, so dirty attacks on this are unappreciated and fall on deaf ears.

I am 17 years old and I can see what destruction Bush is bringing to this country- so why can't you, grown women (and men, and in most cases) see that not everything Bush does is golden, and you yourself stand to lose rights you shuld always have a right to? To believe that someone else should have the right to your body is shameful.

Now, if Bush can see that, and leaves the rights to birth control and abortion alone, I might be able to back down on my standing on gay marriage and leave the rest of his policies well enough alone. Until then, I believe he is in the wrong and I will remain that way.

But of course, this is all moot, since the "winner" won't be official until all the other votes are counted, much to the dismay of the Republicans who won't be able to cheat so easily this time...
