Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Why is it that those who supported Kerry keep thinking that bush et al ever said anything about reenstating the draft except to say no wil not happen.
    <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

First, Bush has already sneakily re-instated a draft by holding people who's contractual obligations are completed in Iraq. Also by calling up National Guard people who are in their 60s and even 70s! Apparently once you enlist for that, they own you till you're dead.

Second, as already mentioned, Bush's first generals who said they would need more people to keep the peace were fired. Their replacements -- who told Bush what he wanted to hear instead of what he needed to know -- now have changed their tunes and say they need more feet on the ground.

Third, not surprisingly, enlistments are down.

Fourth, with something like 50% of the National Guard taken off their expected jobs protecting us here, and sent overseas, has left a shortage of people to fight wildfires, help rebuild after hurricanes, etc. back here at home.

Bush hasn't come out and said they'll be a draft because he would have lost the election once parents realized that a vote for him was a vote to send their own sons and daughters to die for his greed and power-addiction.

I have no doubt the generals would like to not have to have a draft because it's been proven time and again that imprisoning young people against their will and forcing them into kill or be killed situations doesn't make a real good fighting force. No matter how much they threaten them, morale just doesn't get any better

But since Bush is so totally deaf to others and god speaks only to him, sooner or later he'll probably institute a draft just to keep the numbers up. Now will somebody please give that smirking idjit a box of q-tips. Maybe he'll hear better that way...

Imagine Teresa telling foreign dignitaries and their press what she has expressed during the campaign to the press et al?

From the usual horde of recruits who often enlist to A) be assured of a job, B) get college paid for by the government, or C) avoid incarceration.

So the draft isn't necessary why?

              • Here is an honest question-why does believing in conservative christian values make them "skewed"--why does NOT suporting same sex marriage make that a "skewed" perspective?

That is the trouble in trying to find a black/white definition of morality-there isn't one...at least if there was, there isn't anymore?

                To pro-choicers, pro-life is skewed---to pro-lifers pro-choice is skewed...that IS the whole point of a democracy isn't it?

So far the majority of the American public at the very least found the Bush administration less skewed than the possibility of a Kerry admin....the country voted...Bush won.

So why does agreeing with Bush somehow now make that group morally dimented in some way---I would lay money Bush supporters could make the very same argument for "non" Bushites....

Again it is about perceptions and personal needs and wants....non christians can argue all day long that these "values" are being pushed by Christians--well, as a Christian, I could argue there very same thing from my "perspective."

At the end of the day, unless you get that private island, you will have to live in a country somewhere---so you find one that allows you to have a voice (ours does) and you take advantage of the opportunities to let it be heard. That happened-yesterday in the polls....and it will continue to happen at every election on every level.

Heck is used to be you would be in one BIG mess by even SAYING some of the things said here today-so in that sense we have indeed slid the moral slippery slope on a less conservative slope.

                • What could we do here instead of insulting & name calling? Is there a better use of these emotions & energy? Clearly, no one is convincing the other of their view.

We've got to get on with the business of living together in this country, & after the initial upset or euphoria dies down, what constructive, useful things can we draw from this braintrust?

                        • I don't think Republicans are Bible-thumping, religious fundamentalists, blah blah blah. I am most concerned about my civil rights and those of the rest of the American populace. I would be willing to leave the country to protect those rights if need be.

I have not woken up proud to be an American since Bush went into Iraq and people started dying for a cause as yet unproven. All the unity that came from 9/11 wa shattered when he made some bad decisions and now the country is divided between those who support the war and those who do not. So much for unifying the nation.

If Bush was willing to protect civil rights and stop killing innocent Americans and CIVILIAN, non-terrorist Iraqis for his own cause, then I would have little problem with him beyond the gross mismanagement of the economy. But since he is not, I am opposed to him and his beliefs. I don't think they will do this country any good and can harm many people along the way.

I am horrified that in modern times one person can gain the power to decide for millions of Americans what they can and cannot do with their own bodies and lives. And I am further disgusted that people think that just because he won 51% of the vote, that is fair and okay. It's not.

When people stop dying, Bush stops funneling money to his buddies, the economy recovers, and he learns what's really important to the American people (read: not going to war for an unnescessary cause. I'm all for protecting the country against terrorism, but there's evidence 9/11 could have been prevented...what about that?) I am a young person who stands to be harmed in many ways by the Bush regime, both with the draft and with the gross civil rights violations with the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade. I stand to be harmed by cuts in health insurance. I stand to be harmed by the current and continued status of the pharmaceutical industry. All things that Bush intends to change to my detriment.

                          Now, tell me...why shouldn't I be opposed?

"Well, CNN has just called Ohio in Bush's favor. I do not like to see Bush as president again, and the results of this election are extremely troubling for a number of reasons.

I firmly believe that Bush and his cohorts represent what will turn out to be the western Taliban, a fundamentalist Christian corporatocracy. It scares me to think that so many Americans have so skewed a sense of morality, and "morality" is one of the top reasons so many have given for supporting these devils. I do believe that it was the "moral" issues of abortion and gay marriage that brought Bush his support at the polls. But, as I'm sure I don't need to tell you, he is anything but a moral man.

My sense of morality does NOT condone lying to Congress, the American people, and our overseas allies to rationalize an unneeded war. My sense of morality does NOT condone pharmaceutical companies making huge profits on life-saving drugs while millions of Americans cannot afford them. My sense of morality does NOT include saving the "unborn" for a future of poverty and a failing education system.

The principle problem that our country will face in the years to come is not terrorism, it is not healthcare, and it is not the economy. No, the greatest problem we face today as citizens of this nation is the ideological schism among the American people. In most states throughout the Union, we see results that are quite close, even though they have been called for one side or the other. As it stands, a little over half the nation follows the Bush version of morality, a belief system the rest of us vehemently disdain. We have reached a point where we cannot reconcile the differences between one faction and the other. My friends, we are in the second American Civil War, only the shooting hasn't yet begun.

And, God willing, the shooting won't have to begin. After Bush first became president, there arose a sentiment in this country that has strongly opposed the man and the policies he stands for. Over four years that grass-roots sentiment has grown stronger and gained support, and though it has not been able to bring a clear victory over Bush and the far-right, we cannot, we must not give up. Despite the darkness of this hour, my friends, we must continue to put our energies into opposing Bush and his destructive agenda. Continue to sign petitions, continue to send messages to your representatives and senators in congress.

Now is not the time to lose heart. When America's first great naval hero, John Paul Jones, stood on the deck of his ship Bonhomme Richard against the larger 50-gun British Serapis , the picture was very grim. With his hull holed near the waterline, spars shot to pieces, rigging mangled, and masts weakened, Jones was in a precarious position. When Captain Pearson of the Serapis called across the waves, "Has your ship struck?" the defiant Jones shouted back, "I have not yet begun to fight."

My friends, the fight is just now beginning for America's future. I, for one, shall never give up on this nation, and her proper ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Democracy. I will not give up on the dream of America, that so many patriots have bled and died for on the field of battle, on the streets of the segregated South, and in the union picket lines of the industrializing North. And I ask every one of you fellow American citizens to help keep this dream alive, as I ask every fellow citizen of the world to understand that there are still those of us in this nation who will fight against the America that Bush represents.

Now is not the time to bow our heads and weep, now is not the time for American patriots to flee to foriegn lands, now is not the time to give up on America. It is the time that we the people reassert our influence, freedom, and proper place in this nation. "

I have no suggestions. I am simply pointing out that while his intent was the unify the nation, he in fact succeeded in the opposite. I am in no way qualified to govenrn this country, but I am qualified to decide what I believe in and what I think is best for me, and that does not follow the Republican line of throught.

I was pointing out that just because Bush won 51% of the vote people seem to think that it is suddenly just and proper that women's rights are in jeopardy, as are the civil rights of all Americans. I never said that it was not fair that he won with the majority. I will not imply that the election was unfair until some evidence of corruption turns up.

After all, I would like to believe that we do still live in a Democracy...
