Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    One time

When my homebred was a weanling, my Dad and his wife came for a visit. He's not horsey but was around mine when I was a kid. She's not horsie. I asked Dad to walk into the pasture with me to look at some work I needed to do and make suggestions. Wife comes along. The weanling stuck right by the wife the entire time through the pasture. Wife was obviously not sure how to handle this but stayed nice and calm. Finally she asked why the weanling was doing that and not bothering Dad and I. I told her that she was the only one that had not yet petted the weanling. So, she stopped and patted her on the neck. Weanling wandered off and began grazing.

I actually thought of another good one that I get.
"So he's a pony..." Yes, he's a pony. "Is he a baby?" No, he's a full grown adult pony. "So he won't get any bigger?" No, he's full grown at 14h. "So what are you going to do with him?" Anything I damn well please ...at least thats what I'm thinking. My usual response is something like, well, I got him because I wanted a smaller horse that would be good at everything, like trail riding, jumping, eventing, etc.

I really don't mind answering questions about the breed since most people don't know a whole lot about them. I was in the same boat until I bought one and did a bunch of research.

"Why do you make those horses wear bags over their heads?" (Flymasks)

"I didn't know they made clothes for horses!" (Turnout blankets and/or flysheets)

"How come those babies aren't with their mothers?" (Pointing at my two miniature horses.)

The biggest and most consistent misconception I run into is that ponies are baby horses. It's hard for people to comprehend that they're full grown and won't get any bigger. And yes, they were bred that way on purpose.

I am always amazed at those who exclaim how BIG my horses are. . . yeah, sure the tallest is 15/3 . . .

I have found the perfect solution to those who follow along behind me asking twenty thousand questions : hey, as long as you're here, grab a fork and help me muck out these stalls. . . it's amazing how fast they find that they have to be somewhere else. . .

Anecdotal, my neighbor who is an old guy from up north and has Belgians that he uses to pull couldn't get over my " city slicker " ways of fly masks for all my horses. Got ribbed about that over and over. One day I look out in his pasture and there were all eight of his big guys sporting brand new fly masks!

I also get asked "so do you have a race this weekend?"

I'm NOT a jockey, well a racing one anyways. There are other things to do with your horse!
So I get the racing question all the time as well...Nevermind the fact that I am just over 6' and 170#, now where have you ever seen a jockey that size? Pretty sure the race horse would lie down in the gates in protest.

I have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing out loud when these kids come up to the barn in their nikes and earrings (which do come off by the way ), telling me about their horse experience.

me- Ok what is your horse experience?
kid 1- I rode a horse here last year. I'm pretty sure we galloped.
me- Umm I doubt that. Maybe you galloped somewhere else.
kid 1- No it was here. You guys held on to their leashes and ran in front of them, and they galloped.
                me- Oh. Yeah... you trotted.

And I LOVE the first day when we get the kids grooming and leading the horses. We always sit down and I explain to them that when they hold onto the lead rope, the horse is going to follow them. That's what they're trained to do.
Without fail, there is always at least one kid who gets out there, unties the horse, starts walking, SCREAMS when the horse turns to walk behind her, and tries to run away, still holding the lead rope! Usually the kid is walking backward at full speed, holding the lead rope out in front of them going "IT'S CHASING ME!"
Of course the fantastic, patient horse is looking at me like "what the heck is this kid doing?"
Most of the time I actually do start laughing at that point, and tell the camper to stop walking. As soon as she does, the horse stops right next to her.

Definitely good for a laugh or two

this was SO cute! i miss teaching summer camp, it's great when you get a kid who on the first day is TERRIFIED of the horses, and by the end of the week is madly in love with them and has got the bug for life.

we've also had a few kids asking, upon seeing our massive TWH/draft cross and 10hh pony in the field together (they were both black and white, both GELDINGS) if they were "mommy and baby" nope kids, they're both boys, and not at all related! and NO oreo is not going to get any bigger than that!

I get the whole 'are they puppies' with my Jack Russells

But where i used to work we used to ask people for their riding ability. The best one that came back was one that said she was upper level dressage and could ride walk, trot and canter pirouettes.

Really??? A trot pirouette?? Right, that'll be the beginners class then....

A guy in my art class last year asked me if I had ridden Smarty Jones! This is after the disscussion of how I DO NOT race, I jump and all that stuff. Then he tried to tell me how he went to Chincoteauge and pretended his scooter was a horse. I was so confused.

I always get the "Oh, how was your race?" at work on Monday after a show.

And "Can he see out of that thing?" (flymask) or "Is your horse blind?"

One time someone was like "Wow, your horse is really unique looking. I never seen a horse 2 colors like that before." So I explained what a trace clip is (he's a chestnut).

This was kinda funny. I got pulled over on the way to the barn. It was like 6pm, dark, cold.
Cop: "You were going about 10 over. Where are you headed?"
'To the barn to ride my horse.' (I'm wearing boots/breeches and have my saddle in the back.)
Cop:"Right. You're going to ride your horse now. In the dark. In the cold."
                      'Yup, indoor arena.'
Cop: "Oooh. So where is that? What kind of horse do you have..."
I got off with a warning!

My dad told some people that the insides of fly masks were painted green, so that the horse would eat briars and weeds to clean up the pastures. If only!

                          "where'd you buy him?"
                          "germany."
".....what? You went to germany? for a horse?"
                          "yeah?"

when asked how big my horse was by a "horse person," I was immediately contradicted with "18.2? you must have not measured him correctly, the biggest horse on record is only 17 hands."

once I was in a grocery store with my half chaps and ginormous spurs on and a little kid came up to me with these big awestruck eyes and goes, "are you in the rodeo?"

I used to get the "Why are your horses blindfolded?" by the neighbors. They finally understand, although I did have to take a fly mask off once and put it over one neighbor's head to reassure him that they really could see.

Also, "Ooooh, so your mare (big horse) had a little pony yesterday. Congratulations". I just say 'thanks'.

I also get asked if I would let them know when they will race at Charles Town so they can go to watch them. All broodmares and sometimes foals!

I've also been asked why I don't "do" anything with them (the broodies and foals) and why I don't get rid of them since I don't "do" anything with them.

Re the lady eating her Cheerios with her back to the horses. It's absolutely amazing how something (or 3 somethings) so big can 'sneak up' on you so quietly that you wouldn't know they were there until they put their chin on your shoulder, isn't it?

I'm now officially calling my boys "Pintosaurasses" LOL.

I read that term on here someplace but I don't remember who wrote it.

He/she said "I hope he doesn't get any taller because I don't want a Pintosauras."

That made me laugh so hard.

                                          So cute!
