Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    • J. Turner, I don't think I've heard a boy nicknamed "Allie", though it's a common girl's name. I have known 2 Alastair's in the past (one was spelled Alasdair) and never heard them called anything but. It's such a British, regal name, tho - I really do like it.

And who brought up the topic of shortbread?? Gads, I love that stuff! Makes my coronary arteries clog up just thinking about it.

            • I'm trying to find something worthwhile on on demand (post-bath).

I did get the kitchen clean. was starting toworry about the three days of coffee stains (I'm really bad at making it). And the last of the gifts wrapped, including the nasty one that ate my toes last night.

Quinn - I always go for the "ah gawd that's gotta be corny" movies. Those are the ones that are a step above teenage movies. I am, however, embarassed to rent them unless they're on on demand. Example: "Ever After" is on TNT right now, and it's adorable. "First Kiss" is another one of those. No trend though, just made me think of it. You don't have to think, just watch them, suspend disbelief, groan at the stupid girls and enjoy

              • I simply can't watch a sad animal movie. I just can't. "The Yearling" was on last week and I stumbled upon it. Changed the channel immediately. My Vet advised me NOT to watch "Dancing with wolves" many years ago.

Just had a soak in the tub with some of the bath oil I received from my Secret Santa, crazyhorse. Felt great after all those stalls today.

                • "My Dog Skip" is right up there with the movie which had the Golden R, Siamese cat and a big dog- it may have been called "Homeward Bound" and "Black Beauty". When I watch those movies I keep telling myself "it's only a movie, it's not like that in life" but I still sob like a complete goober.

Quinn- you made me giggle "I cry during Onstar Commericials". Your too sweet.

                      • I am a total sap...have been all my life...

My sister, who is 19 years older than I am, said that when I was a little kid-in the 1960's, the rest of the family ( I also have 4 older brothers) was forbidden to watch the "Lassie" show because I was always in tears about the stuff that happened to Lassie and Timmy...

Ditto My friend Flicka, the Yearling, Old Yeller, and most of the Disney Wildlife movies...animal stuff in the movies still brings me to tears...

Which is pretty funny because in my "real" life as an adult, I am seen as pretty much of a hard ass...

                        • Hi greyhndz and J. Turner -

thank you both so much for all that info - have been browsing thru both the whippet and greyhounds rescue sites - there is just something about those hounds which I miss so much !
However, I just ran thru the house to make sure that the other canines and felines are all inside, as it has started to rain/snow here in South Carolina - it seems, that all 12 are somewhere in the house -

Enjoy the rest of your holidays and stay away from those tear jerkers - they just make you want to eat even more cookies, etc

                            • I'm home alone today. My son (16 yo)was with me this morning, but went to visit his father this afternoon and night.

Right now, my big dilemma is do I watch Scent of a Woman or It's a Wonderful Life.

Had an enjoyable dinner at my brother's house, with his wife, daughter, and all of his wife's family, early this afternoon. Went home to my dog and some peace and quiet.

Too wet to go out and play with horses. Raining and expecting it to continue all weekend.

Hope everyone had a wonderful day. Mine was lovely. Good food, good family, good friends, good dog. Contented soul.

                                • Dacinglite - I just have to ask, how does all your do good crap tie in with you putting your stallion down (or pretending you put your stallion down) from last week. Nursing homes and Siamese kitties sounds so sweet...do you REALLY think any of us have forgotten this post: http://chronicleforums.com/groupee/f...11&m=748205484

You know, the thread in which you post about killing your stallion because you can't afford to keep him anymore and refuse to find him another home

In case you forget here's a reminder. Here in November you stated that you had arranged for him to be put down on November 13th
                                  http://www.horsegroomingsupplies.com...9&page=4&pp=10

Then you were prevented from doing it then, but posted right here http://chronicleforums.com/groupee/f...748205484&p=11 that he was "no longer available" and added the signature line of "DL--1992-2004".

So - sorry to jump in the middle of this Christmas cheer but dancinglite doesn't deserve to be cheery. She deserves to be shuned and disliked. She's a horse killer. At the very least she's pretended that she killed her horse.

As for your grandmother, she sounds like a woman of remarkably good taste.

Galileo - I didn't participate in or see those threads, but she wasn't doing any harm here. It's not that I'm so concerned about her, but that I want no conflict on Xmas day. Start a new thread if you want to bash or run her out.

BTW - I finished all the appendices in ROTK. I cried several times. I want to meet Ian McKellan and Viggo Mortensen even more than ever now. I'm still waiting for Tim to come home. He called about 15 minutes ago and said he'd be leaving soon. I have heartburn but may eat sushi anyhow.

I too am home alone after driving back from "beautiful" Bakersfield.....the rest of the family is there and my son here is out with his friends...no pets at home so I am REALLY home alone

I was soooooooooooooooooooooo enjoying all the cheer, fun, friendly conversation that all of you have been having for so many pages here.........

AND I was sooooooooo saddened to see the grinch come out and pop the Christmas balloon.....

IMHO...The entire nature of Christmas is all of us getting what we DON'T deserve...love, peace, forgiveness and grace. I am sad to see this WONDERFUL thread take a nasty hit or two.....

Not to get too religious here but it is CHRISTmas, the day Christ was born......remember HE is the guy who hung on the cross and gave his life so we may be FORGIVEN!! Including you and me!

Enough of that for now...BUT could your guys PLEASE grace the rest of us and forgive whoever it is that you want to bash........or at least take the unforgiveness to another thread and let those of us having a GREAT Christmas alone together continue with our thread....

JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION....but I was SO SO SO enjoying this thread and all the friendly exchange............

                                        • khobstetter - I was enjoying the thread as well - I was alone a lot of last night too BUT this woman killed her horse. For no valid reason. She's not asking for forgivness, she thinks it was just fine behaviour, in fact she seemed to get pleasure out of announcing it to us. It makes me sick. I realize she wasn't causing any harm here but just because she can be friendly does not take away from, change or improve the fact that she KILLED HER HORSE. Christmas or not, how can anyone here be ok with that? It amazes me.
