That was disgusting. I know there are some successful prison rehab. programs out there whereby the inmates work with horses...giving both a chance in life, and I am all for that, but this prison rodeo is horrible. I noticed some the banners of the sponsors of this particular rodeo...Lowe's, Super Buffet, Bishop and Jamar's BBQ. I couldn't see the rest of the banners... Although most of those sponsors are not in my area, Lowe's is...so, BYE BYE LOWE'S...it's off to HOME DEPOT I go.

Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

For those of you who stopped watching when the horse broke it legs, it was dragged hobbling out of the arena with a rope around it's neck, collapsed, was beaten back onto it's feet, dragged some more, and then shoved in a pen and left stand without care or relief of his suffering. It should have been euthanized on the spot! Sick sick sick! Those people should be charged with cruelty. Any event like that or the "wild horse race" should be banned. It is absolutely disgusting!
I refuse to watch rodeo any more. I've been to a number of them over the years, watched many on TV and note how they never show the calf hitting the end of the rope but focus on the horse/rider instead... and even at the "good" rodeos, animals are treated with a total lack of consideration and respect. I'm not opposed to using animals for sport but this is not a sport where there is a training aspect or a partnership created with the animals but it's based on fearful abusive methods of subjugating the animals into submission. They are expendable for the entertainment value of it.

I cant believe I watched that video. Sadly guys, as I found out the hard way, there is no such thing as animal cruelty in the state of Oklahoma.
This is an atrocity. This is beyond disgusting and I truly think clips of this need to be sent to the sponsors of such a sport. We are rehabilitating these people for what, further cruelty.
I am horrified. Our horses are not seen as the old and disabled they may have become, but rather as the mighty steeds they once believed themselves to be.

The state of Arkansas does... we've seized horses there under cruelty laws. In many parts of the state it is damned near impossible to get the owners prosecuted, but there are laws and sometimes they get enforced. Sometimes..Originally posted by snkstacres View Postoops sorry, its the state of Arkansas that has no cruelty laws. My mistakeVisit us at Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society - www.bluebonnetequine.org

I've always thought whoever came up with "convicts working with animals" programs needed their heads examined in the first place. Sorry, but a LOT of people are convicts BECAUSE they are violent. WHY do we want violent people with no respect for life working with LIVE ANIMALS? I'm not saying they ALL are, but SOME are and I've never thought it was safe for the animals. This video confirms it. Although surely not everybody involved is a convict, so what is their excuse?
I agree about getting this out to the major media.
And I am not anti-rodeo ... I've never seen anything like this in a normal PRCA rodeo. Rodeo, like racing, is scary as hell at the unregulated level.

I am not going to watch the video, I will take your word for it. I just wanted to say that the whole convicts working with horses thing is the backbone of TRF and is absolutely fantastic for both man and beast. The stories that come out of that program are very moving. Don't let this video turn you off against that whole concept because it can work and has worked for decades when done correctly.

So you're going to stop shopping at Lowe's instead of informing them that their sponsorship money is being used to promote something you find horrific?Originally posted by lindasp62 View PostAlthough most of those sponsors are not in my area, Lowe's is...so, BYE BYE LOWE'S...it's off to HOME DEPOT I go.
Yeah, that'll show 'em!
Most sponsors rarely, if ever, go to the events that they're sponsoring. They're probably unaware of the atrocities, and the only way to make them aware is to give them a heads up.

How many "good hearted folks" were sitting in that audience enjoying the show? Are these the small town values I am supposed to care about? Where is the common decency here? Cheering and jeering while an animal is dragged on two broken legs? And those poor calves? And, I'm sure they would go around screaming about their "rights" if anyone had the common decency to shut this god-awful thing down.
Anyone who would support such a thing or pay to attend such a spectacle (and I include that god-awful "suicide" race in this) with absolutely no regard for the abject cruelty inflicted on these animals deserves a special place in hell. I would say prison, but, of course. . .
This should be just as illegal as dog fighting.
Disgusting. Just disgusting. That ANYONE would defend this as a "sport" or "good fun" is just amazing to me in a supposedly civilized society. When life gives you lemons. . .say &%^# you lemons! And throw those lemons back in life's face so that it will be afraid of you and won't try that crap again!

Ok so what can we do to alert more people to this??
As I stated, I am not anti rodeo.. I am anti what is allowed to go on in this prison and that is supoorted and sponsored by a major retail chain for one. I haven't been able to watch past the point where the horse breaks his legs....

Did anyone not read my last post? This EXACT same event happens every year at the Calgary Stampede in Alberta. Every year. Exact same thing. Thats what I thought I was watching on the youtube video at first. Except CS doesnt use convicts, it uses cowboys. Looks EXACTLY the same and every year a few horses have to be euthenized.

Contacting their sponsors would be a good start. No money, no rodeo.
Most large retailers don't want to sponsor something extremely controversial, or anything that could be considered cruel.

Uh, no...rodeo doesn't require abuse...but then, abuse is different things to different people. To PETA, abuse is "owning" a horse and sitting on it's back. To some people, eating meat is abuse and eggs are tanamount to a modern-day Auschwitz for chickens.
Oh, ok. So please tell me then why every single picture of a bucking horse is one where the horse has his mouth wide open, eyes rolled back in fear while the rider mercilessly spurs the shit out of him? Yeah, what a nice partnership.
Calves are chased down, a lasoo thrown around their necks and they are yanked backwards so violently they flip over backwards while someone ties their legs up. Yeah, that is also not abuse hey? Just good ol fun and games.
Now we got the wild horse race here and ..yeah. those horses don't look COMPLETELY horrified.
Sure, we all have different ideas about what is and is not abuse. But something tells me if any of the above was done to your animals you would be crying abuse.
BTW..have you ever acttually seen how egg laying chickens live ( I am not comparing it to people, but really, if you think that is humane you are one sick person).
Comment

Yes ma'am I have seen it. I toured thru an operation that was the biggest around for quite some time. It was owned by a friend of a friend. I suppose if I wanted to give those chickens human thoughts I would find them to be miserable. But just looking at them in that set-up they all looked very content. They were well fed, etc.Originally posted by Donella View Post

The bronc horses I have seen look to me like they enjoy their jobs and take great pride in their work. A good bronc horse is worth more than most of our horses are. They are well taken care of beasts.

GARRHHHH
Guys, the point is not ANTI or PRO Rodeo.. it's what is going on in THIS situation.. in a prison. How can these CRIMINALS be "rehabilitated" (which I think is a load of BS anyway) when they are encouraged to be so cruel.. and this cruelty is SUPPORTED by major retail chains and obviously the Prison bosses and administrators.
This is just disgusting. I have seen so much success with the use of dog training and horse training with prisoners... it's beautiful and I really do think it has its place.. but this is just awful and so so wrong.

Someone needs to download the video and save it in case they take it down. There are tons of people who potentially have the influence to stop this- it's just going to take assuming ignorance and not idiocy to avoid alienating anyone who can help, and finding the right person. You could try the head of the states prison department, the mayor of the town, governor of the state, the public relations person and any higher up contact info at the sponsors, the local affiliates of the major tv stations, all the investigative news shows, and any state animal welfare groups.

However - that being said - what can we do, remotely, to stop this particular program? Can we get an address to write, or a phone number to call? Who made the video, we need to make sure they are reputable, and work legally to change this.
