Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • My horse is registered as Protege, and her barn name is Pro (but she also gets called lazy, slowpoke, cow, big girl, etc.). I show her under Silver Dream, but she's becoming whiter, so maybe I'll have to think of a different name.

    • Gracie is JC registered as Skip With Grace, I'll probably show her as Pure Carbon, but I am not sure. I have a few other names in mind but when the time comes to show, we'll see! I have a feeling Pure Carbon will stick though, because carbon in it's purest form is a high quality diamond...

      • Well, my horse's show name and regestered name is the same. He raced under it, and I kept it b/c I'm sure that there is no other horse by this name. Besides, it describes his personality wonderfully:
        Studs Hooligan
His barn name used to be "Studs" or "Studsey", but I thought that was a bit cruel since he is a gelding. I changed it to "Strider" after the character in LOTR, and it fits b/c of his very large trot stride. (This was done long before the movies.)

The other horse's regestered name is:
        Madame Flutterby
Barn name is "Flutter". Fits her attitude of the taunting princess, and her trot is off the ground, as though she is fluttering over it daintily. The ex-owners (same as Strider, and good friends now) wanted to have Madam Butterfly, but that was already taken, so they switched the B and the F to make flutterby. (Also were hoping she would just flutter by the other horses on the track, but she prefered to be out way behind the dust- wouldn't want to get dirty, now...)

        • guess I'm lucky...My horse's barn name is "Coal" and his papered name is "Shades of Black Gold" which I think is nice....He's a black from a black sire and palomina dam...and his name is from both of their names combined.

          • OK, I'll play.
Bailey- Show name= Perrier Blues. It's a rather obscure Jimmy Buffet song. Fits nicely since he is a grey. SIL (when she was a teenager) renamed him after the "cute guy on Party of Five". He came with the name Sidekick... That had to go. I will not ride a horse whose name includes "kick".
Iago- Show name= Havanna Daydreamin. Another Buffet song. Fits since he is dark brown/black and very laid back. He came with the name Spook. OK, he's black and his name was Spook. Changed it very quickly to a cool Shakespeare name, NOT the parrot in Alladin!
Skipper- Show name Pascagoula Run, yet another Buffet song. Fits him well as he is very quick! His registered name is Skipper's Cochise; it wasn't too horrible, so we kept it.

            • Not sure yet what my horses real name is yet, something like Been a Dancin' or something stupid.

I named him Dan the Man, call him "Danny" for his barn name.

              • Well, mine don't show (yet) but they do have registered names!

Liseter Star Jasper - "Jasper", retired old stud teaching my 6-year old son to ride!

Fox Lair Star Legacy - "Mickey" - cute small grey pony, son of Jasper, still unbroken because I'm afraid to get on and can't afford someone else to do it!!

Fox Lair Fantasia - "Minnie" - a 4-year old small pony mare who spent her whole life (except for the last 2 months) in a large beautiful field. She's not enjoying the "human" thing too much and gets called everything under the sun EXCEPT for Minnie!

And then the cutest of all is the stick horse that my son rode at the Del Mar Horse show last year (they have a stick horse class for little kids) - he named it Red Light-Up!

                I love this country!!

                • Great thread to bump, HH!

                  I have 4 horses:

High Flight (Banjo): Came to me with the show/registered name Distinctly Trouble, which I thought was cute. However, my dad passed away in March of this year and made it possible for me to buy this horse, so I decided that in his memory I would give whatever horse I ended up with a show name that meant something. High Flight was the name of a poem that my dad had framed on his desk for years and years - it was written by a pilot in WWII just before he died. My dad was a pilot and loved to fly.. I figured it was a good name for a horse. His barn name was Banjo when I got him.

Country Grammar (Cisco): My paint horse... he came with the name Cisco's Quixote Kid which I just didnt like enough to keep. I wanted to give him some kind of westerny type name because hes a paint.. and I didnt want to do something super predictable like Cowboy or whatever, so I did Country Grammar, because hes "country" and I got him as a 2 year old so he started in "grammar school" lol. Its also a rap song. He came with the barn name Cisco, its just part of his registered name.

Marengo (Elvis): Marengo is a way of preparing veal. Dont know.. I just liked the word. Its also a town in Italy. He came with the name Saucy Marine (you might remember him from CANTER WV) and they called him Saucy I believe.. however he tended to be a handful at the track and I didnt want to encourage his "saucy" behavior, so we renamed him Elvis. It absolutely fits him- he is SUCH a character.

Make It Count (Allie): I just liked the name Make It Count, I absolutely fell in love with her at the track and wanted so badly for her to work out. And she did Shes awesome. Her registered name is Roses For Fara. She "didnt have a barn name" when I got her. Rosie is way overused for a gray horse's barn name, and I hated the name Fara. Allie is actually named for the COTH BB's FairWeather.. also known as the ED of CANTER WV. After all, without Allie, I never would have found Allie!

                  • Since I show AQHA, my horses have to show under their registered names. When I do go to the occasional hunter show, we usually just stick to their barn names since it doesn't really matter.

My gelding's registered name is Shuda Been One More. He has three socks, so I'm assuming that's where it came from. His barn name is Newt. The woman I bought him from called him Newt because he was just broke and "wiggly like a lizard" when she bought him. He has such a goofy personality, it fits him to a T. He's a red roan and we often joked that if we showed him at hunter shows, we would call him "Unwrapped" as a tribute to the great Wrapped in Red. My roan occasionally comes unglued, so Unwrapped would have been very fitting.

My yearling filly's registered name is A Chanceof Blueskies (Sky Blue Walker - QH x One Day By Chance - TB). Her barn name is Lucy. She'll probably just use her registered name if and when she shows at hunter shows... but I think she'll mostly be sticking to the AQHA circuit.

Riley is his barn name. He came with that and I like it. His registered name is Reckless Dozen and I will be showing him under Suncoast.

                      • Betsy's show name is Forever South. I didn't make that up, it's her named she's reg. with the jockey club. My old trainer named her Betsy after Betsy Ross. Don't ask! lol

Bama's show name is Bama's Blues. His barn name is actually his daddy's barn name too.

I used 'Colourful Image' as her show name for a while, which I like. But I've been using 'True Colours' lately. I also really like 'A Moment In Colour'.

Our new two year old (my moms horse) is registered (Hungarian WB part bred) as 'Magyar Lacey'. She came with the barn name Lacey, and we kept that. We'll probably show her under her registered name.
