Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Update on Moose page 8 - Vet says Cushings :-(

Wel my vet just called, and said that the lab called her with the results as she was driving, so she didn't have her book in front of her to comoare values, but off the top of her head, they were definatly not right.
Her renal enzymes were out of wack - I think she said high??
Red and white blood cell counts were elivated - or maybe the red was low, I can't remember, just that she said the white indicated infection, and the red indicated anemia.
Her potasium was low.
Her Glucose was elivated even though she hadn;t been fed in a while.
She said that with teh lab results and the fact that she has lost weight, and guzzling water, it it looks liek she is diabetic, though this iv pretty rare in horses.
Anyway, I talked to her owner's son - the owner is with his raceorses in Ky
and he said to go ahead and haul her to our vets clinic, so the guy who works out here part time will be here in an hour to take her to the vet's house, where she will be put on IV fluids, given antibiotics get more tests run on her, like a urinalysis. The vet is also going to sit down with the lab values when she gets home, to really study them better. I am just glad that teh owner's son made the right disicion.
I am going to go now and change the title of this thread, because I hate seeing "I think Moose is dying" every time I log on.
Thanks again everyone, just keep jingling/praying. Keep fighting Moose baby!!

Oh Freebird - that is GREAT news!
At least now she will be monitored and looked after and they will find out exactly what is wrong with her.
Poor girl and poor you. Hang in there, cuddle your son and reassure the poor little guy that everything will be back to normal again soon!
Continued jingles for all ...

I know a dog is different from a horse, but right before my lab (has since passed on) was diagnosed with diabetes she dropped a ton of weight and was extremely lethargic. She lived for 5 years after that with diabetes getting shots two times a day. She went blind and finally went into kidney failure and started having seizures. That is when we put her to sleep last february. So who knows.

Jingles from Canada!
I have been following this thread with worry lines on my forehead and my heart in my mouth: not much I can do or say from here that hasnt been done or said.
However, I have been thinking of the number of these kinds of threads on both this post and EMG in Canada that our wonderful equine community shares in and provides support for each other.
While that is wonderful, the number of times this sort of gutwrenching worry occurs has led me to the realization that the farmers are right - we horse people are all nuts to be in a sport where such heartbreaking worry occurs so often! But I know everyone will join me in saying that they wouldnt have it any other way: the love for horses is what makes us care so much.
Good luck to you dear Freebird and your sweet Moose and I hope you can hear our jingles from Canada!

Like Riggs, I've been checking in regularly, hoping for good news. I'm so glad they owners could finally be reached, and are doing everything that can be done. I hope you get a chance to get some rest, too.

It sounds almost like she may have Cushing's, and now might be foundering. That would explain her staying off her feet, and drinking so much water (indicative of Cushing's). http://www.crmdvm.com/cushings.htm
Good luck with her.

Jingles for Moose! Awaiting an update here.
I first thought ulcers myself, but she would probably be in extreme pain by now if one had ruptured.
I lost my dog on christmas to a gastric ulcer over an artery and he lost 20 lbs in 2-3 days, became lethargic, went down, pale gums, low glucose, high white, low red. So same signs but when he went down he went down really fast and really hard. My thoughts are that she would have gone downhill already.
Hopefully its not an ulcer or anything that is immediately life threatening.
I hope my post didn't scare you, but just wanted to open you eyes to another possiblity.

Tommy and the guy with the truck and trailer left a whil ago with Moose, and should be at the vet's house any minute now. The vet won't be home for 2 more hours, but they are going to fix her up in teh round pen with lost of water, and soem hay. She was looking better before she left, though she hasn't had a poop yet. It was a bit stressfull though because the guy with the trailer - who works out here part time - was being a total A hole. He's one of those "I am older then you, therefore I know more about horses the you"...even though he has about as many brain cells as a tree stump
I know that sounds mean, but right when he got here, he started saying all this stuff like we don't care for our horses. He looked out in the pasture, and saw Moe, who is on the verge of being really foundered verses slightly foundered, and said how we need to take his muzzle off and start feeding him. Umm, I don't think so. Yes he is a touch thin, but I'll take a touch thin over foundered ANY day - and the vet agrees. Then he goes to the other pasture and sees the water trough is turned over. Now we had just checked it a few hours before, and it looked like it had JUST happen, but he said "Oh, are we not giving those horses water now?" Now, I must explain that we have a year and a half year old bull calf, and whil is is small for a bull, he silll weighs about 800 lbs, and when he's bored I guess, he likes to dump teh water trough - even when it is completly full. Anyway, so now the guy is saying that he thinks that the only reason why Moose got sick is because she got dehydrated (in other words, we let her get that way) UGHHHHH!!!!!!
I think he's just afraid of the truth because him and this other guy were the ones that picked out all these horses for our boss, and lets see so far we have 2 chronicly foundered, 1 mental case, 1 with some kind of neurological thing going on, and then there's Moose.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling and venting.... Hopefully the vet will call later this afternoon.

What a JERK! The last thing you need right now is some know-it-all spouting off about all the things you are doing *wrong* (none of which of course are true!)
Keep you chin up and don't let this dumb*** get to you. You have done everything you can for Moose. Good luck!!!If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on my cats.
