Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Honey, you can NOT leave Kentucky without touring a bourbon distillery:

And for a touch of Appalachian folkcraft:

You know, I have really enjoyed this thread. After being born in Germany, living in Maryland, Illinois, Newfoundland, Texas, Newfoundland (again!), New York, Nebraska, New York (again!), Arizona, New York (again!), and now Kentucky, I have to tell you, I really do love this place.

I hope you enjoy your visit. Let us know how your plans firm up, and if you have any "blank" spots, we'll help you fill them in!

You all are making me homesick ...Kentucky felt more like home to me than Chicago ever has!

Whats going on with the castle? I heard the owner died; did it go up for sale again? Is it open for tours? I always wanted to go inside!

O.K. everybody, now I am ready to move to Kentucky. (I wonder if I can convince my hubby now that we have built a 4 -stall barn, a garage, a run-in , a hay barn and fenced in 7 acres of pasture with 3-board fence...)

There's a recent thread on the castle, it should be either on the first or second page of the Off Course topics.

It's still there, by the way... And no, not open for tours.

Drive down Ironworks Pike & go PAST the Horse Park (going east.) Just keep going straight through a few traffic lights & you'll be transformed into a different era ..... stone walls, trees lining the road, horses - of course - and the beautiful farms. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

If you do this, you will be near my place. Email me for identifying it and stopping by.

But, as for the "What else do we do?" question: Heaven is visiting horse farms. Claiborne is an absolute MUST. Even if you do not get beyond the halters of past GREAT horses hanging in the office and the cemetary next to the office (Secretariat, Mr. Prospector are two of the more recent ones).... the history will take your breath away. And the current stallions are no slouch either.

Many farms welcome visitors. Just call them to find out their visiting hours and, if you make an appointment, make sure to be on time, because a groom will be missing his lunch hour or other work to show you around. Tipping him/her is appropriate --- they are taking their time to make your visit a good one --- but the farm visit is free. Maps of Lexington have the horse farms on them, so make sure you group your visits by geography (Claiborne, Gainesway, Walmac and the Training Center make a good [long] day, then Lanes End, Three Chimneys and Darby Dan are another day.)

A horse person is NEVER at a loss of "what to do" in Lexington. As suggested above, even driving around is an event in itself. TIP: Have the less horse oriented person do the driving. Otherwise you will get into an accident as the driver rubbernecks while trying to maintain the speed limit. Especially on Old Frankfort Pike, which has swales and enough curves that paying attention to the road is a must. If you are both gawkers, have one drive Old Frankfort in one direction and then switch drivers so the other can gape going back down the road.

Others who have visited Lexington will know exactly what I mean. The horse farms are so awesome, that it can be truly dangerous to try to dirve and look at the same time.

Carlydee-- I know EXACTLY how you feel! I was born down here, have family down here, but parents moved to Chicago 'burbs and I grew up there. As soon as I graduated hs I hightailed it back down here!! I HATED Illinois. I hope someday you too can come back "home"!!

PS- I'm coming up for Wayne DuPage this weekend though (parents DEMAND a visit ) It's my first trip north since Wayne July '02.

Thanks everyone. You have given me enough to do in three weeks not to mention three days. I will be coming back again and again so we will have plenty to do on all visits, thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions.

You will indeed get a full report with photos when I return.

Lord Helpus - Please check your private topics and I will ask my friend to do some of the driving so I can gawk a lot!

AJ - we should talk - I'm narrowing down my plans to "get the heck out of here" to Lexington.

I expect I'll be moving on out of N. Illinois by May and transplanting elsewhere (Lexington is #1 on my list!)

I know half a dozen people there well, and probably 20 more in cyberspace.

THE TRICK IS - I need a job! I've been diligently looking for companies to investigate for employment (horse related?!) and contacting people I know there to "network myself".

Perhaps I will take up the advice to have a KY realtor send me a KY newspaper. But I'd feel guilty considering I definately am not buying a house anytime soon!

This thread has been informative for me. Keep the chatter comin!

I'll keep my ears open for anything down here... Meanwhile I keep hearing this ad on the radio for "helpwantedlexington.com" never checked it out myself, but hey it might be worth a try.

INoMrEd-- In regards to the "driving" experience, it's also pretty neat to go at night. Farms like Adena Springs and Ashford (both on Versailles Rd) light up the barns at night. You can't see any horses, but it's still a nice view.

It's useless if you want a "horse related" job. Some top prospects: Rood and Riddle (tech jobs), Hagyard Davidson McGee (ditto on the tech jobs), USAEq, USDF, The Jockey Club (okay, so the last three are "office jobs" but you can make many, MANY horsey connections through them), the larger farms often are looking for grooms... I'll post more as I think of them.

Keeneland is very, very difficult to get into. From what I have heard it is a fabu place to work and no one ever leaves.

You can try and get seasonal work at the horse sales. Consignors pay per diem and many of them pay very well, but it is hard, hard work and long, LONG days.

It is NOT cheap to live in Lexington. And you get hammered with local taxes coming out of your paycheck. But it is doable.

Oh, one last thing. Kentucky has a bit of an identity crisis, best evidenced by the side-by-side placement of "Southern Living" and "Midwest Living" magazines in the grocery check out line.

More than mere geographical location, this stems back to the "recent unpleasantness" (a.k.a. The Civil War) in which Kentucky was politically part of the Union but the hearts of many Kentuckians were firmly allied with the Confederate States of America. This schizophrenic political situation left scars still felt deeply and very, very sincerely by many Kentuckians to this day.

To anyone looking for a home/job in Lex--you don't need to get a paper sent to you, you can look at everything online!

just go to www.kentucky.com, it's the Web site for the Herald-Leader. You'll get all the stories here plus all of the classified-- real estate, jobs, etc. They do have the national search engines for those things prominently displayed on the site, but if you go directly through the H-L's classifieds, you can find everything.

Martha-- what kind of career field are you in? Hitch is right, there are ALL kinds of horsey jobs down here, and they do advertise in the paper. Good luck to all!

Oh believe me - working WITH horses is NOT what I want my "career" to be.... HORSES are my passion, not my job.

BUT! That said - I am currently "Director of Marketing Media" - meaning I work in graphic design for a sales office. I 'am' the marketing department for this little distributor and put together all the large sales proposals, literature, videos, etc. Plus manage the sales support people.

I also enjoy working with people - saleslike - so sales of equine products is reasonable. My degree is in Sociology - marketresearch angle.

I *know* if I try hard enough, I can find a job that is horse-related that my particular talents are suited for - marketing, sales, whatever.

Anyway - I will be checking out those links! I've been on monster.com, careerbuilder, etc... just to get an "idea"... and I *DO* have a personal lead in a sales job there right now that I will pursue.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> It is NOT cheap to live in Lexington. And you get hammered with local taxes coming out of your paycheck. But it is doable.

As far as I can tell, living in Chicagoland (Naperville, in fact), it highly unlikely that living in Lexington is more expensive.

Rent here starts at $550 (if yer lucky) for a closet studio apartment, and finding board *with* any kind of decent quality-of-living for a horse....if you can find it within 25 miles for less than $600 you are LUCKY. Many places force training fees on boarders and jack up the monthly costs.

Someone I know just sold 2.8 acres of property with a tear-down house for $1.2 mil. Can get a nice little chunk of land in a fancy house in Lex for that money!

So I'm definately ready to take my money and get out of here!

I am VERY much looking forward to meeting all you KY'rs, someday.

Martha.... yeah, I think you are definitely looking at a DECREASE in cost of living coming from that area! Holy cow.

Your background is somewhat similar to mine (I am a publications coordinator for a non-profit horse organization, degree in journalism, background in PR/adv./journalism). There are definitely good horse job opportunities in that area here, especially with all of the horse publications.

Also, once you make a few contacts in the horse world down here, even if it's at the barn, a whole bunch of doors open up for you. When I first moved down here I sent out like a million resumes to all of the ad agencies and non-profits down here, but ended up finding my initial job (at another non-profit horse org.) through an ad in the paper. If (God forbid) something ever caused me to lose this job I have now, I feel like I have so many contacts I would be able to scrounge up something by word-of-mouth.

If you can, snag a job out here at one of the organizations based out here in the horse park-- it is a complete, absolute dream to work out here!

Feel free to PT me with any specific questions you might have about the job/housing/boarding/etc. market down here.

                                        Well, how was the visit?

We all got together and arranged some pretty darn decent weather for you, no thank you's necessary!

                                          Kentucky, here I come!

The packers are downstairs, turning my house into chaos. They're packing my computer at noon. Two days to load the truck and one to drive, so next time I get to post I'll be an official Kentucky resident. Yippee!

INoMrEd, I hope your visit was a good one.
