Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • HSM's....Who here has quit riding so their child can ride/show?

Hey all! I've been MIA from COTH for a while now. So long in fact that my Baileybff name has long been forgotten, ha ha.

I have ridden and shown since I was 7 years old (so 25 years). I just sold my gelding in September to save up for a pony - for my 6 year old daughter. While I'm saving, we are leasing a small for her to start showing in the walk-trot's this year. I'm so excited to now be a HSM!!! It's a weird feeling...not being the one riding/showing. However, to watch her ride is AMAZING! She's not your typical 6 year old either. As Wild Horsefeathers states - she would rather clean a stall than her room. She lives to groom, pick feet, all the little things that go along with the riding part. She has no fear - and is all business when it comes to the riding part. We purchased her first pony when she was just 2. We lost that pony the end of May 2008. We then leased her a small for 6 months - and he returned home November 1st. She hasn't ridden since - until Yum Yum got to the barn a week ago yesterday. These two hit it off...and are (yes, I'm biased) absolutely the cutest little things EVER! They will be making their walk-trot debut on the 24th of this month!!!!!!

Just wanted to meet some of the other HSM's here on COTH. Since I can't talk about my personal riding experiences - I must talk about my daughters, ha ha.

If you made it this far - thank you for listening!

Oh my god, that is SO CUTE!!!!! I love your photography also, by the way. But that pony..... that is the cutest pony and your daughter is a fantastic little rider, but you knew all that already That pony looks saintly. I need a pony like that. No really. Never mind the fact that I don't have any kids yet and can't ride a pony that small. I NEED one And the name? Don't even get me started on the name. So cute.

Thanks so much! I ADORE the pony - and she IS a total saint. Boy are they hard to come by (as everyone knows). Isn't her name the cutest!!! Of course, at 6 my daughter likes to come up with names - however, Yum Yum Bubblegum came with her name and my daughter LOVES it so much, ha ha.

So you had to sell your big bay cutie? I apologize, I can't remember his name, but I remember when you got him. Sad, but dang! Yum yum and Sydney are ADORABLE! My son is 6 as well, and just rode today one of the school ponies. He enjoys it, but loves golf more! Very cute, hope everything works out well!

I haven't quit riding, but became the show mom as my daughter has grown old enough to show my gelding. This has worked out for all of us, the horse is dead broke from all the years that I showed him, and I taught my daughter to ride, so she knows how to ride him well.

I'm enjoying being the "show mom" more than I enjoyed showing myself.

Hey Jenny - yeah, Nikolas now lives in Pennsylvania. His new mom loves him VERY much! We keep in touch - and I do believe that I found the perfect new home for him!

Awww...yeah, my son (who is now almost 12) gave up the horses to play soccer when he was 6. So I've been waiting until my daughter was ready, ha ha.

Thank you Ambrey and Munchkins Mom! I do hope that one day we'll both be able to ride and show. Right now I just don't have the time or the money to do both (and we even own our own farm, lol). My photography keeps me pretty wrapped up time wise. I'm pretty psyched at the idea of her showing!!!! I will let everyone know how it goes

                  Joke heard at Pony Club:

                  "I'm suffering from PMS."

reply: "Oh, dear, it too will pass."

"I don't think so - it is Pony Mother Syndrome".

Don't know why, but it just stayed with me.

You're daughter is super cute, and you're so lucky to be able to start her off so well.

I guess its sort of the flip side of watching your youngsters follow their dreams.

I figure it this way. My daughter will be off to college in 4 short years, and the horses will be all mine once again. And I will miss having her home with me!

She is not as horse crazy as I was at her age, and I think part of it is because we have the horses here at home. And that is okay, I never wanted to be one of those rabid HSM's, if she enjoys it, that is a plus, and if she tells me she doesn't want to do it anymore, that is okay too. Because it was my "thing" first anyway.

Yum Yum Bubblegum?!?!? Why oh why did I have to miss out on the ponies by not taking up riding when I was little?!?!? Actually I would have grown out of the ponies when I was about 10 (damn you DNA!).

That kid....and the pony.....are the cutest things ever. Love the clip job!

I love ponies too - and was secretly very disappointed that I had all boys who are not remotely interested in riding. I console myself with the thought that "it's more horseyness for me then".

However, I now have a niece and though she's less than a year old, I've got her whole riding career started for her - starting with her wonder horse this birthday.

I didn't start riding until I was 12, billiebob, I know the feeling - and at 12 I was tall enough for a horse. So, I ogle ponies that everyone else has - something so adorable about a little equine (but I'm not fond of minis...go figure).

Hey There! I too gave up a horse I loved and decided to be full time HSM! I have not ever regretted the choice. I figured I have zero talent so let the kid have a crack at it!!

It is so much fun and I have met some great people along the way. Your daughter and her pony are so cute and remind me of my DD and her little small back at the start a few years ago. Please visit our blog as well. We even have a section in which we put up photos of other kids and their horses/ponies! Good luck and have a blast!

HSM here. I haven't given up riding but with every pony purchase, "my" horse seems to fade further and further into the distance.

Your photos are great (I do remember seeing your talented work before) and your DD and Yum Yum are too cute! Have fun being a HSM. I wouldn't trade it for the world!
