Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I guess I see both points of view-the OP and the BO.
Truely the BO would do well to hook up with Katie Price...
they could share money and dreams...

The BO should have been much more careful to make sure it was clear where the money was going.

The BO clearly misinformed the community...it showed through the newspaper article, and her website.
              I would feel duped if I was a sponser..but that's just me.

Now, next on my "to do" list, is asking mum to hold me a fundraiser so I can travel Europe and maybe get to ride with some BNTs as well....since some people find it completely alright, I won't feel bad about taking their money...

But I will tell everyone that I will use the money to feed orphans in third world countries...

So they promoted some local businesses at the event in return for donated auction items. We don't know that they plan to build an indoor and the money spent on BNT lessons would certainly improve rider/customer education.

                Where's the beef ?

The beef is that they said the funds would improve the facility and rider education, but the only rider being educated with the funds is the BO.

If the BO thought having a fundraiser to raise money for herself was perfectly reasonable, she would have been honest about what the funds were for.

I think it is a bit tacky to ask for donations to fund your privately owned facility as if you were providing some precious community resource. Is it the ONLY riding facility in the area? Aren't there farms where someone can go take lessons from someone who has taken those kind of lessons and, you know, actually paid for them themselves or put in their time as a working student to get that kind of education?

That said, I guess she's a good saleswoman...it sounds like it was presented in a misleading but not strictly untruthful way, but then how is that different from the person who posts their Saddlebred-Clydesdale-QH filly and claims it is a sporthorse prospect? Misleading advertising runs rampant in the horse world and ultimately the buyer should beware.

Now that I've said that, I'm providing a priceless community educational service on backyard breeding and bad training techniques and my paypal is...

Indeed. There were so many contradictions on what was said by the BO, it made my head spin. In one post it was for the community, and in another post, she clearly stated the funds were for herself and herself only.

We've all attended in-house shows and fundraisers, I'm sure, and most of us probably have no issue with where the funds would go...but geez, if I said I was having a fundraiser to support, lets say, Cancer research, and you all came out thinking your money was going to cancer research, and found out I gave it all to the political party you detest, you'd be pissed, no doubt! (hey, that was one heck of a long sentence, eh)

You thinks wrong. First of all, this facility is leased on PROTECTED land here in this city. There is a program that was developed to prevent the development of natural forest, lakes, and farm land in the area. All houses and farms on this land are never to be offered for sale, only leased. That being said, they are also not allowed to build on these sites. Very rarely there is an exemption given to someone who has shown great financial success over many years, and if the business on the property clearly benefits the community. This particular chunk of land is not open for building, there will be no arena.

This property was given the lease in belief it would be turned into a theraputic riding center, however there is no mention of it on their website and knowing a few boarders there, it is clearly a lesson and eventing farm.

Its too bad the local forum was deleted, you could have read it straight from the BOs mouth saying the money was going into HER pocket for training. That is NOT helping the facility, or expanding riders at the farms knowledge.

Protected land, leased barns...none of that is pertinent to the BNT-auction question that has been raised here.

Jealoushe, I don't know the players, but have been around some of the same persuasion. They try to play fast and loose, then wind up getting flushed out before their scheme gets to the finish line, so they 'fess up.

It sounds to me that you are ticked off at the BO and jealous of all manner of things involved with her. She may have started this off on less than transparent footing, but since she has come clean, it is now up to the businesses to decide whether to go forward or pull out of the auction. If you are on good footing with some of these business owners, and want to clear up the misinformation they may have been given without being snarky about it, fine. But otherwise, I do not think you are served well at all by continuing along these lines, or even by being involved in this person's activities. Surely there must be a better person, a better barn or a better cause to direct your energies towards. JMHO.

I only bring up the barn and arena because of the claim the money was going to build an arena.

The auction has already happened, the business's have no idea (as far as I know) that they were misinformed. The BO came clean on the local horse forum, most of the businesses were not horse related.

I do not think you are served well at all by continuing along these lines, or even by being involved in this person's activities.
Continuing along what lines? This is purely a discussion. I love COTH for that reason, you can openly discuss situations and get some insight.

Why do people always have to throw out the jealousy card? I can assure you there is nothing about this person or situation I am jealous of. I have strong morals, and honestly just thought it was wrong/tacky. Is it impossible to think that maybe some people really just do care when others are taken advantage of?

I just went back and re-read the original post on this thread....and I believe all of the things you mention above are very pertinent to the situation. The BR(barn rentor) has stated that funds would go to build arena etc etc, yet she can't build an arena as she leases the property. She has blatantly mislead the community as a whole.

Why would you even suggest someone is being motivated by jealousy? I don't even know who "jeloushe" is, but I don't see her (or him if that is the case) acting in any other way but to inform the community about what is going on here.

are still here and trying so hard to prove that the OP is wrong and they are right. That they are even resorting to taking the op's words out of contex . Shame on you for trying so hard to ruin a good thing. And FYI I know at least 4 disabled children/adults that ride at that Barn, they just don't advertise therapeutic riding because they accept children/adults on a one off basis. Doesn't the OP by being mentored under a BNT bring wonderful opportunities to the coaches and students at the barn?

If the BO thought HER best interests were the community's best interests, she would have put that in the letter rather than make a lot of vague claims that the money was to improve the stables.
