Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Poll: Riding Alone

I know we have had many threads about riding alone, the safety of it etc. I am curious how many actually prefer riding alone then riding with others.

Personally, I relish SOLITUDE. I prefer to ride a alone - especially trail riding.

Just me, my horse, fresh air, open spaces and wildlife.

I have been riding out alone since I was 10 years old, its been a way of life for me for 26 years now!

I now board at a "big barn" with many riders. I am constantly getting asked to be joined on rides.

I make excuses, "oh I never know what my schedule is!" "I ride fast - are you able to trot and canter the whole time?" "I am going on a LONG ride today" - finally another boarder said - do you prefer to ride alone? Which I confessed to- YES!

Then of course all of the questions - "aren't you SCARED?" "don't you get bored?" "how did you train your horse to go out alone?"

And the answer is no, I don't ever get scared out on the trail! I NEVER get "bored", and I train my horse by DOING (and that not being scared part helps).

So cothers - Alone? With company? How do you like to ride?

I trail ride alone all the time. Out in the canyons and regional parks. I actually enjoy my quiet time out with my boy, it's like my zen time (ya, I'm from SoCal ). It allows me the opportunity to work my horse as I wish, as well.

That being said, I do love riding with my friends, too. We trailer out all sorts of places and camp or just do day rides. But I am particular who I will ride out with. Not a fan of riding with yahoos, those who can't control or are fearful of everything outside of a ring, or those who take completely unnecessary risks with their horses. I prefer riding with likeminded people when I go out.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who enjoys the solitude of a lone ride. :-)

If I didn't ride alone, I'd never get to ride.

I grew up on a farm/ranch. When I'd get a spare moment, I was off riding my horse.

Now that I'm on my own, I currently have to board my horses, although I've never boarded at a "big barn" per se. The place I used to keep my horses, me and the lady that owned the place would sometimes ride together but not usually. She had her routine for her endurance horses and I had mind for my barrel horses.

Where I keep my horses now, I am the only one who rides on a regular basis. Once in a while, I'll go with the group on a trail ride, but I ride to keep my horses legged up, which means lots of trotting and loping. Riding with the group means we walk. ;-)

I do carry my cell phone when I ride at all time, and it is attached to me and not the horse. And my husband knows when I am out riding, so I try to cover my bases there as much as I can.

I even ride my coming 4-year-old colt by himself out on the trails. The more you do it, the more confident they become. He's already quite the good trail horse.

I like my alone time with my horses!
It is not enough to know how to ride; one must know how to fall.

I mostly ride alone, and I'm not bothered by it, but it would certainly be nice to have someone to do conditioning work/ hack with sometimes. Not always, though, just sometimes

We tend to get a lot of nice things done when it's just the two of us; but sometimes it is nice to have others around as there are a lot of things going on out on the street and it's hard to get her to relax when we are alone sometimes.
          Still, prefer alone.

I prefer to ride alone and 95% of my rides are alone. Every once in a while I'll get together with a couple of girlfriends and we'll ride together, but it is mostly walking because we are busy gabbing and catching up. My rides vary when I'm alone: slow-pokey walking rides on the buckle, bareback rides where I work on my seat, drop-my-reins rides where I go through up and down transitions and steering with no hands, trotting/cantering up hill rides, long straightaways where I can work on lateral exercises, conditioning rides, etc.

I'm never scared riding alone and always wear a helmet and carry my cell phone with me. Mr. PoPo knows where I'm going and he knows the trails well in case I don't return in a timely manner.

What I consider good footing and what others consider good footing can be vastly different; I don't trespass, others have no qualms about it. I don't always trust other people not to be yahoo jerks and I don't like most people anyway, so I'm very happy to ride alone!

I always preferred riding alone, and would get grumpy if there were others at the barn who I knew wanted to go out with me However, these days I'm really starting to appreciate having good company out on trail rides. I'm by nature a very shy person, but I'm really trying harder these days to be more social, and I'm actually starting to like it!

Now, if there is someone in particular that I am very opposed to going out with, then I do everything I can to avoid. I don't mind helping along the greenbeans or the newbies to the area, I actually enjoy that as well. But if you or your horse are not trail safe then I don't want to spend my only ride that day going over emergency situations in my head.

I ride alone 95% of the time. I'd never get to ride if I didn't. However, I also enjoy riding with people that I know, however, scheduling is frequently difficult.

I ride every weekend, and they know that, so every now and then I get to ride with someone.

I like group riding well enough, but I checked prefer to ride alone because, as someone else said, if I didn't ride alone I'd never get out on the trails. I much prefer solo to groups that are deficient in basic control of horse and/or trail etiquette. I for sure don't worry about the safety aspect of it, even riding amongst cougars and snakes.

I trail ride alone, but I make sure I've got my cell attached to me and that someone at least knows I'm out, if not the general direction I've gone in.

Depends on the "company". If the company is under control (both in a ring, and on the trails) and not too numerous (2-3 riders max) , I am just fine riding in company.

I rode alone for years and years and loved it. I enjoy silence while trail riding, you can see a lot more wildlife that way, and it's just peaceful.

My current horse, however, hates trail riding. She was like that from the time I brought her home from the racetrack. Very herd bound, would get nervous going away from the barn, and try to race home. We worked on it and made a ton of progress but she still isn't any fun going solo, and only marginally better in company (unless we are trailering somewhere, such as to hunter paces etc, then she is fine).
So, I haven't been riding alone on the trails much these past years *sigh* even tho I thoroughly enjoy it.

Both. I'm happy to ride alone, and sometimes want to ride alone for thinking time, reflection, just enjoying the silence, etc. I'm also happy to ride with others and enjoy spending the time with friends. Depends on the day, my mood, who's around, what I plan to do...

I live alone, and have my horses at home, so riding with company is not an option.

No trails, though, but I do take him for a spin around the yard occasionally when we're done with arena work.

My horse is 100% better alone. He is very brave by himself, but other horses make him more nervous as he picks up on their attitudes.

In the arena, I love to ride alone, he is much more serious when alone.
On the trails, he is less spooky alone and we can canter without anyone complaining that his canter is "too slow". And we can gallop without him getting too wild.

I do love to trail ride in company though. I never go more than 20-30 minutes when I'm alone. With company I could ride all day.

Where's the option for "I prefer to ride alone, but rarely do"? I board at a pretty good sized barn, so it's rare to have the ring to yourself. I like riding alone, I can just get in a zone and work on us without having to worry about what other people are doing. It's my happy Zen introvert bubble Fortunately, I work odd hours, so it's rarely very busy when I'm out, but it's odd to have no one around. I do like my barnmates, and most of them are fun to ride with, I just prefer to work alone, though a trail ride with friends is great

I hack out alone pretty regularly, when the weather allows. I carry a cell, and my horse isn't particularly spooky about that kind of thing; I board with eventers, though, and hacking out alone to work on hills/trot sets/fitness isn't all that unusual.

Yes... if I didn't ride alone, I would never ride.
I love schooling all on my own... and our lessons are always private....
But for hacking I would like some company, so sometimes a friend will come over or I'll trailer out.
I did board the pony for Nov and Dec, but thankfully the indoor arena was not used much on week days so I had it all to myself most of the time.

That said... when someone did join us, it was a wee bit distracting for the pony, who had never been ridden with others in the ring with him.
He was fine with it... no naughty business......just at first he was gawking all over. Silly boy.
If we decide to go to a few schooling shows this year we will have to go over to that barn a few times and ask some others to join us so he gets used to it.

I like both, but it totally depends on the company. Almost all of my riding is solo unless my teenage cousin comes with me, and that's more me supervising her because she's a beginner. Which is fine because she's good company and we get along well, but I like to do more than she and the old horse are capable of. It does make me feel safer to have someone with me because the ranch is pretty isolated.

At my old barn, arena rides were probably half solo, half with others but I was the BM and generally only had time to ride when it wasn't too busy. Trail rides I usually did by myself because I never had time to plan them. Honestly......I'd sometimes sneak off to avoid having to take some of the boarders along........most of them were wonderful people that I still consider friends but I could never quite escape my job when I was with them.

I'll ride alone in the arena.

Up until recently, I did a lot of solo trail riding on my mare and it was one of the things that gave me such a sense of accomplishment, as she came to me a bit herdbound and I am far from a great rider. Over time I became able to take her out for a couple of hours on her own. But in the fall we had a couple of scary encounters with loose dogs, and then possibly a BEAR, and the mare's hardly the bravest horse in the world, though she will take care of me ... so now I'm thinking I need to stop trail riding alone, and it makes me very sad!
