Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Not again! severe flooding threatens the Pacific NW

Just a quick note to ask you to send some positive thoughts towards those of us here in the pacific NW. I just moved back home on Thanksgiving following the flood in Dec. 2007 (yes, that is nearly a year that I was homeless!)-- now we're expecting RECORD flooding in the Lewis and Thurston counties yet again. Last time, I had four feet of water in my house and barn... and it could be worse this time. After all the time, money and work I've put into rebuilding, it's heartbreaking.

I guess on the positive side, we had a little more notice this time (rivers are supposed to crest Thursday afternoon--last time, it was "sit tight, the levees will hold..." and then at 11pm, I got a call that maybe they wouldn't... and fifteen minutes later, I had two feet of water in the barn as I drove away with my horses and dogs). I evacuated horses today and got everything in the barn up into the loft. Now I've got the house and garage to do. Am taking just a second to drink some coffee and take a breath before I get back to work.

--Deep breath-- Okay, we'll get through this. Again. I guess we'll wait and see-- but do cross your fingers for us. We need it.

    Stay safe all.

Ouch. Are you in the 100 year flood zone? Around here the zoning board/ city council (developers, basically) redrew a bunch of those arbitrarily so they could build on the land, and a lot of people who were new to the area bought houses that they believed were ouside of the 100yr. They're not, to put it midly, and they are not happy about it.

This has been such a wet and cold winter so far. I still have almost a foot of snow at my place. For the last three weeks we have so much snow, now it is torential rains tonight, 40 mph winds, ugh. I hope you weather the flooding! It's been tough!

I hope you and yours stay dry and safe. This time, while stressful, is better, you have a warning. It still doesn't help since the house and barn can't be evacuated but I remember seeing pictures of the farms underwater and the animals standing on whatever high ground they could find.

        I hope they are mistaken.

          AAGGHH! It's Nasty out there!

We have never had so much water out in our field and it is now encroaching on the barn etc and my basment is flooding rapidly. I think the combination of about 3 ft of snow( out here in the Fraser Valley over the last 2 weeks) plus frozen ground plus record breaking rainfall in the last 12 hours are making for a scary situation. On a positive note...I can now see my riding arena and all my trot pole/grid work that I laid out a month ago and haven't seen for 3 weeks

Just started my own whine, er, thread on this topic in Off Course. I spent about 6 hours evacuating 16 horses to the local fairgrounds. I am exhausted and it hasn't even really begun. I'm back home, in the floodplain, to care for the horses that we chose not to evacuate. They are the hardy ones.

Jingles for all affected! May it (please please pretty please) be less severe than currently anticipated.
Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.

My barn has been flooding all week. Mr. DDK finally got out there with the tractor and dug huge trenches to divert the water away from the barn and this morning the barn was not flooded. I just hope the horses don't fall into one of those trenches.

Getting to work this morning in the dark was a nightmare. Lots of water over the road way that can't be seen until you are right on it. The radio is saying that tons of roads are closed and we are supposed to get another 4" of rain before Thursday When will this stop!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this -- will have to be by hand. Will need to still have horses in the field around it. So how wide/deep is effective yet not too dangerous?

This winter has been sooo tough. We were hauling water by bucketful for 9 horses - have had water back for about 2 weeks now, but we're just exhausted. We've got a few piles of snow holding out from where we had shoveled it into a wall, but it's been gone from most areas for about a week.

Trying to decide whether to go to wal-mart and stock up before they flood out again (lewis county) or to just figure if they do, I can just go north to the major stores where it's not flooded.

                  ARG!!!! I WANT TO RIDE!!!!!!!!!

To the OP - sending tons of jingles your way... Luckily our place only has one pasture that is prone to some flooding and it is far from the house/barn, but my heart goes out to those of you in our area that are not so lucky.

My frustration is that our arena still has snow in it!! We don't have footing beneath yet (it's just dirt), so it's still too slippery to ride in, plus it's so wet that things would just turn to slushy mud instantly if I did. I haven't been able to ride, beyond bareback up and down the driveway and on the roads, since this all began and I'm going nuts! To make things worse, the driveway down to where our trailer is parked is also still snowy/icey, so I can't even trailer to somewhere that has an indoor. I WANT TO RIDE!!!!!!!!! Will this ever end???

                      YIKES!!

I live on the flood plain of Sumas Prairie in the Lower Fraser Valley. I have in- out stalls wih drained paddocks and a perimeter drained hog fuel arena. In all the record breaking rain storms we have had in the last 6 years (since we redid all the drainage around this place) my barn, paddocks and arena have never flooded. My stalls are soaked and my arena and paddocks are under water this AM. We are under flood watch for the Nooksak right across the border which apparently is close to the edge. However....I know I am lucky compared to some of you further south in Wa state. My prayers are with you and your families and horses this AM

I am almost to the Canadian border and there is alot of water here. I made it to work with only one detor but several coworkers have messed up engines now because of crossing too high water.

My barn is now dry since Mr. DDK put trenches around the barn. My horses have dry stalls and a rather large area to get out of the standing water. I am not complaining at all after watching the new last night and seeing those poor people down south.

It just depends on how much water you have. We have some that are 2' wide and 40 ft long and then one that is only a few inches wide.

Jingles for all you west siders! Those of us on the east side are completely cut off from you with all the passes closed so I can't offer any help. However, if there is anyone in Kittitas County needing help, let me know. My road is now open after being closed yesterday due to ice.

Our roads are closed (every one, in every direction - no escape!) and I am out of grain. I am GLAD that I don't have horses at home right now! My boy is safe and sound at his well-stocked boarding barn, but our goats are another story. We are feeding them a homemade mix of human foods (oatmeal, molasses, cooked rice, etc.) to keep them in calories until my husband gets back from his attempted run to the feed store over washed out roads. He promises not to drown himself or the car, but I couldn't get the goats to promise not to lose weight in the 24 hours between proper rations. I have learned my lesson about stocking up, and will never again assume that I can run out of feed and just run to the feed store before the next meal is due!

We're okay in Lake Stevens. Fortunately we live up on a hill so no danger from major flooding. I don't think the horses have ventured outside since Monday.

                                  The Orting Valley

Calvincrowe, the Orting Valley was the first place to be evacuated. They knew what was coming and started earlier there than they did in many other areas. There are some livestock evacuation sites listed on NWCN, so maybe the horse went there.

JoZ, how about a clean-up party on Sunday, if 'the river don't rise', or at least if the water goes down? We can all bring our own cleaning supplies, food and water. And an extra couple gallons of bleach and a bucket.

I can bring some brushes and hoofpicks, since you'll probably need some replacements.
