Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Championship swag-- buy it if you didn't win it?

    This made me think:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/WEF-Horse-Co...item3cf331f697

$35 for a WEF championship cooler.

Would you want it? I mean, for $35 you are getting a deal in general……and a helluva deal if you think about how much it cost to win it.

Yet I can't imagine using it and liking that. I'd always know and feel crappy that I didn't win it.

Same goes for cowboy trophy buckles and saddles. I imagine some guy unable to pay his rent and selling off the stuff he won to raise the funds…..

How do you feel about this?

I would, if I thought it was a nice cooler/good deal/whatever. My current cooler is a championship cooler I didn't win (won the year I was born). One only needs so many cooler/saddles/buckles. Selling them off makes sense.

If the person who won it didn't want it for whatever reason, I see no reason why it can't be used by someone else. Better than throwing it away or stuffing it in storage never to be seen again. Some of the good higher level people with multiple horses probably end up with tons of these things.

I wouldn't feel bad using it either - anybody who knows me sure would realize I didn't actually win that

I have a trophy saddle, was a real bargin on ebay. I liked the brand-name first, but couldn't find one I could afford until this buy-it-now saddle appeared for a low cost and I jumped on it! Saddle was brand new, never used at all, has All-Around Cowboy on both fenders plus other information on the skirts. I figure the kid selling needed the money, he priced it, I bought. Both of us were happy.

Best part of all? Fits my Sporthorse BEAUTIFULLY!! This is about the 6th Western saddle I have purchased in trying to fit him, none of the others did.

So I need to polish my horsemanship a bit, to be a credit to the horse when I ride the saddle in public. I want to look as good as my "advertising" says I am!! Ha Ha

I feel nothing of sorrow for the sellers of trophy objects. They don't want them anymore, so I stick my hand up to buy them if I need the item. I have several old (ancient!) cooler squares from winners at the harness track. They work well cooling out my horses, wash like a dream, letters on the sides don't mean anything to me beyond that I have the CORRECT cooler side up while on the horse! Ha Ha

I have a couple of reject coolers (mostly from our local hunter circuit) that I've acquired from consignment shops or yard sales. I never really gave it much thought.

Meh, no big deal. Lots of trophy saddles are sold, most are just not comparable to the ones the rider won in and how many saddles do you need? Coolers, etc are the same. If I needed, it would buy it at a good price because pretty sure everyone at my barn knows I didn't win it, nor would I try to pass it off as such.
Again, most are not distress sales, just too much stuff.

I personally would feel odd about the cooler. The price is tempting if it is in good shape, but I'd just feel odd. I have to admit that I'm not a huge cooler person unless we are showing (so I'd def not use it at a show) or bathing.

Honestly, I don't feel strongly either way except it's not something I would buy, or use in public (there I said it).

I have a trophy saddle that was given as a youth prize. I am way past youth so I have fun with it! I have people that have said, "I know you did not win that" I always respond "is it because I look old or that I am not good enough?" Lol

one of the championship coolers that one of horses won... it is used as a dog bed as our golden decided it was hers... it only cost about $50,000 to win that thing

Why not just donate the unneeded coolers to a therapeutic riding center or something??? I think that someone who can win at WEF would rather have the tax credit than the $35. I recently sold a bunch of stuff on ebay, and my husband totaled up the cash I got and then figured out that it would have been almost the same advantage tax-wise to have donated it all. Plus I would not have had to deal with the headache of tracking, shipping, etc.
                      Man plans. God laughs.

I almost ended up with a trophy saddle. A friend working at a tack shop called to say my dream saddle had just walked in. A jumper rider had won it but didn't like it! Sadly it was too small. I see nothing wrong with buying/using the cooler. Given the new owner is not claiming the win.

I would totally buy that if it weren't pony sized. That is a great price.

A friend of mine was oohing and aahing about having picked up a collection of silver-plate horse show trophies for a couple of bucks at the Goodwill. I blurted thoughtlessly, "Why would anyone want to display trophies they didn't WIN?"

I bought something similar for a steal of a deal & use it all the time. I've gotten a few weird comments about it, but it doesn't bother me since I don't claim to have won it. I just use it .

If I needed a good cooler, I'd snap that up for $35.

                                  Reasons to buy the swag.

1 it's functional and you have a use for it.
2 It might at some point be a collectable
3 you lost yours and it is a similar replacement
4 deception you want to display in barn to give your establishment more panache. If asked you just say that horse isn't here now. Don't mention it never was there. Unethical but I bet there are people out there that do it

I bought a championship cooler because it was a steal and I needed a cooler for a horse I had up for sale. I didn't want to spend a fortune and no one has ever commented on my green bean being champion of the a circuit when he just started showing.

And it lets me dream sometimes that it did happen,

Size right for my horse and great deal. I am trying to not bid on it. I would likely try to remove the 'champion' wording because that will just lead to to many unsolicited conversations when I'm already edgy at a show. If I were just using it at home, then I would leave it.

No I would not use it if I didn't win it, it was marked "championship" which indicates you were there.

Although I do think it would be cool to use one if it was "historical" item or something else special about it.
