Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

See, I knew I was in the wrong place when they did publish that BAR series. Also, I think there was some author who had a series of articles about her adventures with keeping her backyard horse and DIY stuff. It seemed more like a blog (then not yet as common as now), and an article meant to make readers feel like they can relate rather than learn.

I do remember articles written by, say, BNTs' grooms who described the care they gave the horses in their charge. As a kid, I did like the detailed articles about tack cleaning or doing a spider wrap on a hock. By the way, I still haven't attempted one of those.

The better (if different) replacement for PH was Mike Plumb's Horse Journal. They had some useful information and reviews in there. I remember it in the paper-with-three-holes-so-you-could-keep-all-the-issues-for-future-reference, early days. Is it still around and the same in its focus and quality?

I'd be curious to know from the person who has the 1970s PH issues if she, too, sees the meat receding and the fat increasing in PH's content.

I think with almost any topic focused magazine (horse related, cooking, decorating, crafts) - the content becomes repetitive after a time. You first subscribe when you are less knowledgeable about whatever the topic is, but over time, there are only so many ways that what is more or less the same information can be re-packaged and retain appeal to a broad audience.

Ha, I think this is actually where I learned to do a spider wrap! Horse ripped her knee and the wrap working beautifully.

Not to drift off topic, but does anyone else still miss the first few years of Equus magazine (1970s), when it was basically a gorgeous horse-centric arts magazine?

My parents gave me a subscription as a kid. There was a monthly "How My Horse Stumped the Vets" column, but the main articles focused on the art and science of horses. Photography and design were incredible, and the articles were written at a much higher reading level than you'd ever see today. RIP, original Equus!

My grandmother got Equus from day one. They had a black cover and looked very scientific. I learned a lot from that magazine.
Anyone remember the high end Spur magazine that came out around the same time but didn't survive long?

I don't think so. I used to take Horse and Rider many years ago. Like when it was privately owned. I ran into an old issue a few years ago I kept for, like, 30 + years because I bought the horse on the cover of that issue. I sat down to thumb through it and read the darn thing- it was pretty good, lots of helpful articles, big name guest writers, fewer glossy ads. Of course they that mag has been sold several times and now has the same publisher as PH and has simlarly dumbed down.

Along those lines, my trainer was invited to write a few articles for PH circa 2004, before the nadir of BAR, and I still have one of those issues because a picture of moi appeared with the article. Same thing as with the other old issue, no comparison between the current repetitive drivel sandwiched between glossy ads and product testimonials aimed at beginners and the actually insightful issues of even 10 years ago.

Good publications keep up with new material and new takes on older subjects by current name writers active in the sport or skill, they don't aim lower and lower and lower.

Farm magazines today are free, the ads alone more than pay for them.

I expect some horse magazines may have to go to that, when enough subscribers quit them.

At least COTH the magazine still has purpose with the show results, neat articles and wonderful pictures.

Horse Journal just went out late last year. A client was giving me all her copies, then was all bummed out saying they were sold out to Equus. Frankly, I thought BOTH of those do waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much fear-mongering and making horse ownership sound like something halfway between raising orchids and brain surgery. Also, when the "content" amounts to little more than an infomercial for some blanket or supplement company, that's irritating.

I'd rather read an actual AD than feel cheated by a feature "article" that's nothing more than an ad in disguise. I also think too many of these "product placement" pushers are shills for some of the silliest excesses we see on COTH of what you "need" to own an everyday horse.

It's too bad; years ago I subscribed to PH, Horseplay, Dressage & CT (now THERE was a real one!) and at times even Western Horseman and read all of them cover to cover in addition to The Chronicle. COTH went through a period when it seemed little more than an A-circuit mutual admiration society, but is MUCH improved in content lately. The rest are repetitive and mostly aimed at beginners.

I'm also someone who is going to allow her gift subscription to run out. I already told my sister, (who has gifted it to me for years), not to renew. Of course, it will be another 2 years or so as they continued to send her renewal reminders and she just kept re-upping, even though it wasn't time to renew and it added to the tail end...

I have been getting that magazine since the 80's, black and white issues. I would devour the articles for the masters that would contribute. I agree that the content of the magazine has really gotten kinda fluffy. My absolute favorite section of the old days was the "What's Wrong With This Picture?". There would be a shot of some type of horse activity, clipping, loading onto the trailer, leading, etc, and you would try to find the dangerous and careless mistakes. When I catch myself doing something pretty stupid around the horses, I say out loud, "What's wrong with this picture?", and sadly, no one (other than hubby), knows the reference.

I let go of them in the late '80s because of the encroaching nonsense!

I'm another longterm subscriber who gave up 6-8 years ago. At that point I was only reading for the GM critiques and even those had reached the point where I could have written them myself in my sleep.

My favorite BAR article was "How to Put On a Halter".

Not to hijack the thread but if anyone DOES get the magazine and did not use the coupon in it for Southern States/Triple Crown feed (it was in January '15 issue between pgs 16-17), I would sure love to use them. I'll pay you to mail them or whatever works, thank you! Please just Private Message me here.

I had the old 3-hole Mike Plumb's Horse Journal (fantastic for a while, then it seemed like Mike or whoever got tired and the quality went down a little) and Dressage & CT (*very* good stuff in there in the late 90's!). But alas - nothing ever lasts.

Is Nancy Whatshername still with PH? She's a genuine journalist and I've seen her byline lately in other publications on the East Coast. Her stuff was interesting and usually quite timely.

I gave it up probably six or sever years ago.

Ahhh yes, Practical Horseman, it was the first horse magazine I subscribed to back in the 80's. LOVED it when it arrived in the mail, and I would sit and read every page - go back and re-read again.

And then it started getting crummier, I got more experienced. I think I stop subscribing around 1995....
