Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Well here's a new twist. Just got a call from someone who was looking at our horses up at the fairgrounds. Presumably another evacuee? Called to say that they have "no water" (water was filled this morning) and buckets were tipped over or pooped in (yup we have a few bucket dumpers and poopers). And it looked that way when she was there yesterday too! And SOMEONE was going to call Animal Control... not her, but she was warning me that SOMEONE was SURE to call.

In retrospect I should have said "hey, pick up a hose". But instead I just burst into tears and sobbed in her ear till she hung up. Now I have to leave work early to head up there before something else happens.

Yes, I want to have a clean-up day on Sunday even if it's not 100% ready. We have to get them home.

    • JoZ, I'm sorry that everyone is not helping everyone out there. Since all the horses there dont have owners 24/7 you think the first thought would be "let me get these horses some water" not "let me call animal control"

Hopefully after the weekend you can get them home. I wish I was closer to help.

      • JoZ - sorry to hear about the phone call you received. That's awful!!!

I wish I could join in the work party on Sunday, but I have previous plans that cannot be changed. If you have another work party, please post the information. If I can make it, I will. I hope you have a good turnout and are able to bring your horses home soon!

We would welcome any help at the farm tomorrow, Sunday, January 18. Around 11-12 would be good but if you have different timing needs just let me know. I am going to be away from the computer most of the day today getting stuff done but will definitely be on tonight. Please PM me and I will respond with phone number and address -- don't feel comfortable posting it in public, hope you don't mind. I can answer any questions at that time. Thank you for all of your support and help!

HUGE thank yous to Stryder and her DH. It was a beautiful day for flying but Stryder's DH wasn't flying, he was working amid the muck and mire inside and outside our barn. And Stryder -- well, maybe she doesn't fly, but it wouldn't have been too hard to find something more fun and less taxing than a day at our farm. But they spent the day here, and I am so extremely grateful!

A lot of progress was made. A lot remains to be done. I'm actually more surprised at the progress than at the things that remain.

We have a total of six horses home. Just 24 to go, hahahahaha. (Yes, I'm tired.) Just got in from the fairground because after all the work here at the farm, there were still 24 horses wanting dinner up there.

We could probably bring 7 more home tomorrow and Tuesday. We are doing most of the hauling home with my 2-horse trailer since I don't feel it is appropriate to ask for help to get them home -- not when we have twice required assistance to get them OUT. There's no urgency to bringing them home!

I am lying in bed typing on the laptop. If I don't post in the next two seconds I'll be asleep and the cats will finish this message with a series of nonsense letters. So I'll wrap up the way I started: huge thanks to Stryder and her DH!!!

                    • Well, it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining (a rarity itself in the PNW in January), blue skies and a nice drive out to JoZ's. It was clear to see the water's path - grass and debris to the top fence strands, some fences crushed under trees.

JoZ and her group have made tremendous progress. Water had been 3-feet high in the barn. They've been pumping like crazy and really just a few puddles remain. They've shoveled muck, manure, ruined hay, bedding. Weird what's left. Pelleted feed in a plastic garbage can with a lid - wet, swollen and bad. Supplements in a metal garbage can - dry as can be. They've walked the fenceline and retrieved halters, tack, little plastic containers of bute, wormer - all the stuff we buy, use and never really itemize.

Weird to pluck a leather Western saddle off-billet from a mud puddle, covered in slop, and have the price tag fall off.

Our little group hauled out blankets and tarps, threw them on metal fences and hosed them off before they got really nasty. (They were pretty nasty, already.) We washed feed pans and dipped them in bleach solution.

We shoveled, scraped and raked, trying to make a few more stalls inhabitable so they could bring home a few more horses.

There is a huge mound of "organic" debris - manure, ruined bedding, hay and feed; piles of cracked and ruined water tubs, bedding bags and other plastic that will go to the dump.

Really, the amount of progress that JoZ and the other people on this property have made is inspiring.

My DH and I are a couple of desk jockeys. Glad to help out.
There will be another day to fly for him, and I was able to get a nice evening ride on my own sweet mare.

Even if people can't come for an afternoon and lend a hand, please cheer all of them on. It's a daunting job.

Woo hoo! The horses are ALL home!

Our friend Bobby spent the whole week scraping and shoveling our barn (and also did probably 3/4 of the feeding and watering of the horses at the fairgrounds). Yesterday was Bring 'Em Home Day!! We had brought some home throughout the week as stall rehab allowed, but yesterday Bobby made... lemme see... well 7 or 8 round trips to get the remaining horses. We figured out... 30 horses, 2 horse trailer, but two horses had solo trips back so that's 28/2=14+2=16 total round trips. The fairgrounds is 17 miles from here, so 34 miles round trip. 34x16= 544 miles of trailering!!! That's like a trip from here to Spokane and back! Just amazing.

The horses are all doing well. No foals yet, and the broodies are settled and relaxed. There is still some clean-up... there will be clean-up until summer probably, of some sort or another. We are going to focus next on the arena, since we have no place for the horses except their stalls at this time. Hopefully they can be turned out in the arena by the end of the weekend or early next week. They are good eggs though, well-behaved and attentive despite their incarceration. No scratches, no illnesses, a bit of rain rot to treat. Not a bad outcome at all!

Thanks to everyone for their support. I heard through the grapevine that there might be some funds for us up at Monroe Farm & Feed, which will be greatly appreciated. You rock! We will probably be up there this afternoon for some supplies -- the big restocking will wait until the feed and tack areas are in better shape. The stalls took precedence! Also Bobby wants to put in shelves for us so more stuff is UP, in case something like this happens again. Three times in just over 2 years makes it seem like a recurrence isn't out of the question, as scary as that seems.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart... <3

Am so glad your kids are home. What a relief for all of you.

He said Wednesday, which made me raise my eyebrows, considering all the work that remained when DH and I left last weekend. But he wasn't far off.

First flood foal is here, safe and sound!

The first of my two bred mares, safe back home after the flood ordeal and evacuation, foaled a delightful healthy filly last night, 2/6/09 at 9:30 p.m.

                                  Pics here

Thread about my silly mumbling mare here

Since so many of you followed our saga and gave invaluable support, I wanted to share the good news here (also in case you don't visit the breeding forum). My second mare is due in a couple of weeks. She however is a pro at motherhood. Jewel, who foaled last night, was a maiden, at least as far as I know, so I was particularly worried about her mental and physical health. She is handling everything extremely well, just as she handled the evacuation, and she obviously did everything right, since she had a big strong baby girl.

Also my first-ever homebred filly! Much relief and celebration here this weekend...
