Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Hello. My name is Amanda Smeltzer. My husband and I own KC Ranch in Michigan. I am interested in the horse you had advertised on Agdirect.com. We are running a jumping program here and we use the horses for lessons and showing. Please e mail us back and let us know any injuries this horse has or has had and how you think they would work in our program. I would also like to know the asking price for the horse. The only other information we would like to have is the reason for the sale of the horse. Thank you so much!

                • I think maybe we need some perspective on this (or I could be wrong ). I definitely think getting the mother involved was the RIGHT thing to do, and if the mother is worth anything at all, she will take care of business. If one of my daughter's ever does anything and tries that old "my friend had my password" excuse, SLAP me if I believe them. To me, you are liable regardless and that would be my answer to them...you gave out your password so it's the same thing (although I think that excuse is nonsense).

BUT, does anyone remember calling people on the telephone (yes, rotary dial) and asking if their refridgerator was running? Isn't this like a modern day phone prank? I doubt this means the girl is headed for a life of crime. I got caught in the worst way pulling a phone prank. Of course, I grew up before the advent of caller ID and *69, so we always thought we were clear. There was an old "trick" that took two to accomplish. You'd call from your home phone a number just ONE digit different from the home number and whoever answered, you'd responded "MOM! (or DAD!, accordingly) I'm at the movie theater and I need to be picked up!" To that you'd be told wrong number. You'd proceed to go ON and ON, saying that was your last quarter (no cell phones either ) and could they PLEASE call home for you and ask them to pick you up. They'd agree, nice people that they were, and your friend would answer as "Mom." "Mom" would then rant and rave to the poor stranger on the phone, keeping them on there as long as possible, saying "I gave that girl $40 dollar and she doesn't have a quarter left! That good for nothing..." Blah blah blah. Anyway, I failed to realize that a lady in my mom's choir had a # ONE digit off from our number and recognized my voice when I called from the "movie theater!" Talk about busted! It was my last prank call. And I'm happy to say I turned out relatively normal.

My point? Let Mom deal with it (and we'll hope she does) but I don't think the kid is necessarily the scum of the earth. I give her points for creativity. Hopefully she'll channel it well and turn out just fine.

                  • I think more action needs to be taken. The parent can be involved in this matter with another phone call. She needs to be bothered to deal with the problem, especially with new evidence that she's not only done this to FLSH, but to others and who knows how many people have gotten emails from this same person. Last year I got emails from someone and after spending lots of time and money sending out photos and video info. I was finalizing details of an actual sale. Sent out the sales contract and never heard from the person again. This was probably the worst case of "time-wasting" that I've ever experienced, however this sort of thing is running rampant online these days and it's costing all of us money in the long run, let alone valuable time spent answering inquiries. This person obviously knew how creepy they were sounding, they were intending to creep someone else out, and they deserve whatever punishment they have coming.

My last suggestion is to try to gather together more evidence against this girl BEFORE calling the mother back. Try to get some information from anyone that you can find who has had emails from this same person and take action at that point with all of the evidence that you have. If the girl claims someone else had her password, which frankly I do not believe, but it could possibly be true... they will have to deal with that from their end. It sounds very much like she is the exact person doing this, not some mystery person with her password, otherwise why would SHE have answered dear "Billy"?

The police are bound to take this more seriously if you have proof from other individuals and can gather more complaints against her. She will not stop having fun and playing creepy games with people if she does not get seriously busted. My gut tells me the mom wants to protect her offspring, thus the reason she offered the excuse that her daughter may have given out her password to someone else! That just seems obvious to me. Mom is going to protect her offspring, so other action needs to be taken immediately, otherwise more people will be victimized by this.

I believe that the person has been located....we shall see...and may possibly be a teenage girl. After Bea tracked the IP to it's origination, she then did a lookup for the supposed name and voila....a probable match. Then the lucky part---a separate phone number at the same address for the parents!

So I just finished conversing with the mom about said teenager. She was genuinely shocked to hear from me I believe and said that she would be really surprised if her daughter could do something like that but she would definitely talk to her when she got home from school today. She sounded seriously concerned. She also threw in some bit about "well I know some of her friends had her password at some point and were pretending to be her but I think she changed it"....nice try mom but I ain't buyin' it!!! Mom also said she didn't think that daughter had been on the computer much lately, BUT I have it on pretty good authority that she was using that email as recently as this morning.

SOOOOO...if anything else happens, I'll share. Maybe I'll get an email apology, who knows!!! I did find out something cool in all this though---if you want to block your caller ID from showing up on someone else's phone, you can dial *67 at the beginning of the call--COOL!!!

                                    • interesting saga - glad that it has turned out okay for you flshgordon!

Reminds me of a barn I boarded at years ago. Daughter of the BO got a job with their vet and took his cell phone once day, and then she and her friends got busy using it to call everyone.
Vet calls *his* call phone, stupid daughter answers it - ***BUSTED***!!!
BO then asks me if I could please return this bag of "things" to the vet when I go there today to pick up some meds.
Sure - no problem (I had no idea what was in the bag)
Vet's wife was SO ticked off when I showed up with the phone. She (and I, once I heard the story) felt that the most intelligent thing the BO could have done was sent the daughter there to apologize and face the music, but nope - had a boarder do it instead.

Boggles the mind how parents wrongly *protect* their children from reality ...

BelladonnaLily, I too remember the refridgerator phone calls we made as kids. And therefore, I'm not sure if I think what she's done is criminal in the strongest sense. And if I had been caught during my refridgerator calls I would have been made to feel terrible about bothering those poor people. And forced to apologize and cease and desist.

Does it really matter what these affectionate people do. So long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses? Mrs Patrick Campbell (1865-1940)
