Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

          • On top of my mountain we've had it all and it includes 3.7 on the richter scale for earth action. The mountain is made of a granite that moves pretty frequently.

We had a tornado go over the farm but it didn't touch down till the valley where it wiped out a barn. The Horses just turned their back on it. And we had one touch down and wipe out our loafing shed in the field 100'x 30' picked it up and dropped it in the driveway like a pile of toothpicks. BUT we were lucky it missed the houses and the barns. Theoretically a tornado follows a draft like lightning and when we moved in I was such a dummy that the farmers tried to teach me. If you have the doors closed on your barn or if you have at least one end closed there is no draft and the tornado bounces like a ball on a pool table and changes direction, the same with lightning.

I followed that practice and so far 26 years and we've been fine. At the worst if there is global warming we might be seashore property, or if the Oakland fault opens we could be an island in the middle of the Delaware. We would lose electricity and the phones if the world blew up but we would still be here and you can bet I'll still run a horse show if you want to come.

            • Well, at least we all know where to go in a pinch Snowbird. I had no idea you had tornados in NJ either. Ever been in one Snowy? I'd take a quake anyday. At least I don't have to worry about the horses being sucked up.

I didn't realize Flshgordon had filed a police report. I thought she was waiting to follow-up with the mother to see what the mother had done first. Guess I missed that part. I agree those are the only things that need be done. In fact, the police report would have only been necessary for future protection, in case nothing was done about the girl and she ended up being worse than we thought and started to do more than just emails with other people. Initially, the police would only investigate and do the same thing Flshgordon did with the mother, I think. So I guess Flshgordon didn't wait for the mother's response and filed both a police report AND talked to the mother? I must have missed that part.

I never knew that. I've lived through tornados and I always wondered why people said to keep the doors shut. Now I know.

I'm sure they didn't, because usually they investigate it first. The mother may have assured them it was only a teenage prank, as she did with Flshgordon. However, at least something is on file just in case the girl does anything more than send emails. Plus, the police would probably need to know that it has happened to more than one person, and I'm not sure anyone else reported what the girl did.

I seriously doubt the police laughed about it. This girl caused fear, worry, and aggravation for Flshgordon, and the police never laugh about that. Now, whether the police can do anything about this girl's actions, well, that's another story entirely. I'm sure at this point, they'll leave the matter in the mother's hands, but at least a report is on file in case the mother is unsuccessful and the girl decides to continue along these lines.

xegeba, as the daughter, cousin and niece of police officers, I can tell you that there are definitely some frivolous reports filed that the police laugh about.

flshgordon's report would NOT be one of those.

                                • flshgordon filed the police report BEFORE she knew it was a teenage girl. If you read the first part of the thread, it is VERY obvious how worried flshgordon was about the possibility of her horse being stolen. It was a VERY real threat. Only after she filed the police report did she find out it was a teenage girl that was sending the e-mails.

When someone e-mails that they are coming to pick up your horse and they know where you live, I certainly hope the police don't just laugh about it!

                                    • Unfortunately in my experience the police do not get involved until after the horse is stolen or rather the threat has been executed.

We had threats from disgruntled ex-employees and it was the police who told me to buy a 12 guage shot gun and keep it at the ready.

Hence, your visions of Snowbird sitting on the tractor with a loaded shot gun guarding the farm.

Looks like this has caused quite a stir since I've been gone the last couple of days. I guess I'll post an update, then I am about done with it.

ETBW....Had I known you were the court appointed expert on such situations, I would have come to you first. I simply posted the topic looking for input on whether or not it is normal to get these type of responses to a sale ad. There was no flying off the handle or lynch mob in my original question--I just asked if anyone thought that was weird or standard op procedure for sales. I have not sold a horse before and therefore am not familiar with the odd responses one might get. From other topics I have only seen goofy questions from children that can't spell. This obviously did not fall into that category. SO....while you may think less of me for "starting a freaking topic on the internet about how to handle the situation", I really don't give a flip.

I'm new to selling horses and a lot of people on here do this for a living. I came here asking for advice (which last time I checked was a pretty regular use for this BB) and got lots of it. Personally I think it was a good choice because it eventually led to someone helping me track the little brat down. A person whose opinion I respect and value suggested I should call the police and file a report immediately and I did--BEFORE we knew who it was.

Personally I don't want to lynch the little darling, but if I were her mother, her butt would be grounded for a good while. I can't stand it when parents make excuses for everything their children do as though it's always someone else's fault. They have the means to contact me to apologize, IF they wanted to. Growing up in the south, manners are pretty important and apologizing for something when you are wrong is a big deal. I don't think this kid is going to grow up and be a stalker, but if no one ever calls her on anything, who the heck knows. I have called her twice again and no one answers the phone. I'll try one more time and then I'll probably drop it....not because I want to but because I have far more important things to do with my time. Obviously she knows she's been busted because I haven't heard from her again. Maybe that is enough just that she knows the internet is not completely anonymous and she can be caught.

Maybe I'm just a big weenie that I don't like to get anything emailed to me that I perceive as vaguely threatening, but I'm not all that worried about it. I haven't done any permanent damage to this girl by contacting the police, OR her parents and I'd do the same thing again.
