Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I've been following this thread with much interest and have decided to finally weigh in. At the very beginning when some posters commented that the person in question might be some kid, I immediately discounted the idea, thinking it sounded too much like a stalker intent on creating fear through threats. It certainly scared all of us! Later when it was discovered that the person in question was, indeed, a kid, I was quite surprised; however, it did not change the fact that the situation involved a stalker intent on creating fear through threats. This was a very definite power and control game, played out by someone feeling very out of control in their life.
I was relieved when I learned that due to Bea's great detective abilities, Flshgordon was able to contact this kid's mother. Way to go, Bea! I think that knowledge helped a lot of us. Personally, I felt that a lot of the subsequent comments about what everyone would like to do to this kid were merely indicative of the fear this kid caused all of us and were merely a form of letting off steam in that respect. I never took any of those comments seriously, and I don't think anyone else did either, for the most part.
Normally, I would agree with Snowbird with respect to allowing parents to discipline their children, as opposed to immediately pressing charges with the police, thereby potentially causing even further problems down the road. Turning kids into the police without first trying to work things out with them could only cause further psychological problems in the kids. However, in this case, I don't feel any of us have any sense of closure here. I know I don't. If I were in Flshgordon's shoes, I would feel it my duty and obligation to other horse owners in the world to make sure I have properly ascertained that this problem has been taken care of, and I don't think I could move on in good conscience without doing so. I would call the mother back as merely a follow-up and ask her what she discovered and what has been done about it. For instance, if it turned out her daughter's friends did have her daughter's password, as she claimed might be the case, then I would need their names so that they could be reported to either their parents or the proper authorities--or both. If it turned out that the mother discovered what her daughter had been doing, then I would need to know what has been done about it. I would also use that opportunity to inform the mother about the other incident involving her daughter and her computer, and let her know that this is apparently more serious than we originally thought. If the mother's responses were satisfactory, then I would simply leave it at that, knowing the matter has been taken care of. But if I still did not feel that I received a satisfactory explanation regarding the situation, then I would proceed with the police.
As to the "kids will be kids" comments, well, parents have said something similar all these years with regard to young boys--"boys will be boys"--and it only enabled sexually aggressive behavior in boys, sometimes even creating future rapists. So I don't think this is something that should be written off as merely "kids stuff," because it is not. However, I don't think it's something that needs to be immediately reported to the police (unless we never knew the identity of the parents), as would be the case with adults. I think what Flshgordon did was the right thing--contacting the mother first and giving her a chance to address the problem. It's just that at this stage, we simply don't know if the mother has done anything at all about the problem, and that's what's needed for closure here. I, for one, can't even walk away from this thread until I know that this problem has been properly addressed.
Just my two cents, for what it's worth ...

Mystic... God no.... please no kids at 46!!! And I admire a woman who knows she doesn't wants kids and DOESN"T have them! the reason for my query? things have changed since you and i were ding dong ditching. The internet. The kid that did this needs something other than a smackdown. Is she going to get it? Nope. What kids are up to today is shocking to our generation. Too bad most parents today are more concerned about what kind of car they drive, the club they belong to and when their next Botox appt.is. My bet is , this kid is involved in way more than terrorizing some horse owner.the simple fact of the matter is... no one posting here is going to make one bit of difference. Period.

I agree that Flshgordon did the right thing. What I don't see is how the rest of us need "closure" on this.
Did any of the recipients of this girls whacked emails actually believe a trailer was going to pull up in the barnyard and haul the horse off?
Her responses the the advertisements were so off base as to be ludicrous. I can easily see one of us having posted "You wouldn't believe the loony tunes person that responded to my ad, lol what a clown" and the entire thread being just another wierd people and the goofy things they'll say topic.
Threatening email? I have been the recipient of a threatening email and can tell you this kids is not.
Mine came the day after my mare died. It said "I wish you had died instead of your horse"
I noted the email, found that it was from a corporation, went to their website and forwarded it to the Eastern Region president as well as the CEO. AFTER I called Fairfax County Police and reported it. The sender was fired after the police visited her employer.
That's threatening, not some kid who is obviously in lala land and needs to have her parents put a lock on her computer access and find something constructive for her to do.
Yes, Flshgordon was right in notifying the parents. Good work on tracking them down. It's up to them now, not the freaking bb, to worry about what their daughter is up to.
Snowbird, I wish more people in this world had your patience and compassion.

Now, I certainly see both sides. I respect both sides. What I take strong exception to is the notion that she's "just a kid so still learning" theory because be that as it may, I can tell you at fifteen she knows better. Being fifteen is no excuse. And you go, Mistic! I hate hearing the "kids/ boys will be kids/ boys" because although children test thier limits, this is NOT, IMHO, an acceptable way of doing so.

lol, ETBW I was thinking the same thing! I hardly need closure every time someone I only know over the interent gets a prank email (no offense flshgordon
)
She's a kid. A stupid annoying kid who deserves a good talking to sure, but last time I checked being stupid and annoying were not yet felony offenses. She probably didn't realise how someone might react b/c she's young and lacks life experience....
