Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • I find the lack of sympathy and understanding and the unforgiving nature of these posts offensive in the context of other posts where there was such immediate and vociferous defense of adults who admitted their participation in fraud and worse offenses.

In the context of weak excuses for when horses have been found to have been given illegal substances the "Not Me" excuse seems so valid.

Yet, we have a teen ager whose mother has been informed and a teen ager who did nothing to actually injure anyone but herself so unforgivable. I am certain that this mother you consider so incompetent will take the necessary measures to correct her child with therapy or whatever else is needed.

Do you seriously believe that exposing her to more cruelty and abuse will cure her or do you think that the rejection will drive her further away from reality?

          • I guess I had to sit through too many bomb threats in school to find sympathy for her.

I graduated last year from high school and so was a jr and senior in the hot and sensitive time RIGHT after 9/11. We had a bomb threat at least once every term. Mostly from teenage girls with nothing to do. One of the excuses I liked was "I needed more time to plan a surprise birthday party for Jenny." So please pull all 2,000 of us out of the building to stand in the -20* windchill for 4 hours. Thanks.

How is that ANY different from this little "miss thaaang"? I'm sick of dumb brats playing with people like this and wasting everyone's time. I guess I wouldn't have been so nice as Flsh - I would have tracked her down and given her to the police.

The people who did the bomb threats got 1-3 years in prison. They knew what they did was wrong, and so does she. Sorry, too bad honey. It is our choices who make us who we are - not our surroundings. Perhaps she should have chosen differently.

Hey, I'm not excusing adults who do stupid $h!t, either. Age is not a factor here; lack of responsibility for one's actions definitely is.

In the context of weak excuses for when horses have been found to have been given illegal substances the "Not Me" excuse seems so valid.

And this has WHAT relevance to this discussion?

Yet, we have a teen ager whose mother has been informed and a teen ager who did nothing to actually injure anyone but herself so unforgivable.

Wrongo, Snowbird! We have a teenager who REPEATEDLY threatened (however "jokingly") to come and take someone's property, with or without their permission. That's not a victimless crime.

I am certain that this mother you consider so incompetent will take the necessary measures to correct her child with therapy or whatever else is needed.

Oh, I see; the mom saying "She gave her password to her friends; I'm sure it couldn't have been her" is indicative to you that she intends to discipline this sprat? Is the weather nice in your world?

Do you seriously believe that exposing her to more cruelty and abuse will cure her or do you think that the rejection will drive her further away from reality?

Gee, perhaps she should have thought of that before cyberstalking someone's horse? And then doing it AGAIN after she'd already been busted? Snowbird, are you for real?

Being a "Drama Queen" as compared to a "Drama Princess" reflects not age but the effectiveness of the drama and the level of expertise.

Now, there, I agree with you. But I still say that those who think this kid should have her a$$ kicked into the next county are neither drama queens nor drama princesses. In fact, I daresay that we are more concerned about her future mental health than you are, since we think she should be disciplined and brought back to reality as to what is right and what is wrong. You don't seem to want to do her that favor. So who's more cruel?

              • I really don't understand this hard nose tough stand for a kid, when there have been all these threads about how adults do a mia copa and suddenly they are forgiven all kinds of heinous crimes. I have certainly been flamed plenty when I wanted to take the hard road for sexual offenders. There's a thread on TH where some kid was giggling about KK flying planes stories. Now, we know that's not the flying he was doing. But it's roll out the carpet and welcome back into the very world that made the crime to do time in rehab.

This tough judgemental stance seems quite acceptable regarding this 15 year old youngster to all of you. Sure what she did was terrible and sure she needs to learn her lesson and not do it, and if you don't think her Mom will do that well this community can do it but with a little compassion I hope.

If this is such a forgiving community why not this kid too? Why is this kid an exception is there something I've missed?

Yeah, Snowbird, I think we all got your point about how this poor little girl shouldn't be held responsible for her actions. We just don't agree with it.

And who says KK or anyone else guilty of sexual abuse is welcomed back into any venue? Just because a known sex offender shows up somewhere doesn't mean they were invited or welcomed.

Really, you should make an effort to get off that mountain top and visit the real world occasionally. Might be interesting................

And just FYI, it's "mea culpa" - my fault.

                      • Snowbird, any consideration of other wrongdoers aside, could you point out to me where the kid *or* her mother issued any sort of mea culpa?

Because all I saw was a variation on "my little precious wouldn't do that."
And my patience with that went out *years* ago, when my apartment in the barn where I worked was broken into and things stolen. Local cops knew who it was, but couldn't get anywhere with the parents, who refused to believe that their darlings would do anything like that. (Nor seemed to wonder where all the new possessions came from...)

My only comfort was that they stole a bottle of rotgut rye that I was using to hold the window open, and I figured they got good and sick on it.

                            • OK! here is my mea culpa I like children and I believe they are the future of the world. I believe as adults we have a responsibility to them and that if they have parents who don't teach them we and our horses should.

I am a mother and a grandmother and therefore the donor to generations that will be taking over the world when it's their turn.

I believe that when an adult does an illegal action and commits a crime it is unforgiveable, because by then they should know better. Adults do their evils for things like power, money, greed, selfish pleasure and control. Children do their crimes as a cry for attention, love, self esteem and security with their own identity.

I was blessed in my teen years with adults who chose to take the time to teach me better ways to cope with the disappointments of life, or I might have taken the wrong path. I feel obligated therefore to do the same for other peoples children.

I read the forgiveness in the thread for Ken Kraus, I read the thread for forgiveness of Paul Valiere and the ones on defense of Barney Ward. These were adults who pursued pleasure, greed or power and yet you forgive them.

This child of 15 that you do not know, who's life you do not know, who's family you do not know you are willing to judge guilty. You judge her mother as permissive but you do not know this mother!

OK! by your standards I am guilty of compassion, I am guilty of sympathy for a youngster who is in need of help support and love and I am as permissive as her mother because I am making excuses for bad behavior. I am guilty of asking you to hold your judgment and not to judge her because of the evils that may have been done to you by others.

That is the crime of being politically incorrect and I admit it I am guilty, but I do not apologize.

                              • Snowbird, you're making several unwarranted assumptions here, among them that those of us who don't find the girl's actions amusing want her crucified, that her mother *is* doing something (admittedly we don't know she isn't, but she did blow off the caller when informed of the daughter's actions),and, last but not least, that everyone condmening this child's actions feels forgiving and all sweetness and light towards some of the adults you keep dragging into this (and who have no more to do with it than does Donald Rumsfeld.)

I'm not advocating slamming the kid into amaximum security prison, but dpn't you think that 15 is old enough to start finding out that actions have consequences?
