Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I figured you were one of the few people on this board that would be grateful for new knowledge. I can't believe how offended some people get when someone tries to HELP them by educating them.

One:
People do not appreciate other people who are smarter than than they are, they usually prefer people who are dumber and will look up to them.
Therefore, advertising your intelligence is rude, unnecessary and just makes you feel smarter but proves you're not as clever as you think. Good manners would require that you overlook the errors of people and judge them by their intent and not their grammar or spelling.
There are many people who would be in the genius category and may make errors spelling especially when typing instead of writing long hand.
Two:
It has been part of the "Rites of Passage" from childhood into adulthood since the discovery of communication for teenagers to make phony phone calls, write phoney letters and pass on phony rumors. Getting caught usually helps them to realize it was stupid, but at the time they being bored just enjoy stirring the pot. It is a simple way to find out how to manipulate your environment. So please let's not act as if this child has committed, a major crime by living in a "wishfulment world" sending a harmless letter.
It would not be fraud unless she mailed a bad check or actually made moves to make a purchase. Lighten up, there are worse things that will happen in your life as you grow up.
By the way, I went back and corrected three spelling errors and there may be more of them so don't judge me by my spelling either. I just think faster than I type.

Snowbird....while I would agree with you that it is mostly a childish prank, what would have happened if we didn't figure out who it was, and I turned the info over to the police and they figure it out. No backing out of it then. It's not like saying I like your horse I'm sending you a check and the check does not arrive. This is like saying---"I'm planning to come take your horse with a $9000 discount and there's nothing you can do about it." What if the horse ends up missing in a totally unrelated circumstance---who do you think we would be looking for?
I think there are harmless pranks, and then there are more serious pranks that *could* have consequences. I'd settle for an apology.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That's rediculous, you certainly would not turn over your horse until you know that the check has cleared! If it was COD you would certainly require a Cashiers Check.
The horse could end up missing and it would have nothing to do with these circumstances. Horses get stolen out of pastures by lots of horse thieves.
If someone makes an offer on a horse that you have for sale and you don't accept the offer and the horse disappears would you be immediately suspect the person who made the offer.
Even if you did, she would have a traumatic lesson and never ever do it again but unless she actually stole the horse, she wouldn't be convicted of anything and you would be guilty of harrassment and maybe false accusations.
You cannot do business on "Maybe" this or "Maybe" that if all you have is an offer whether bonefide or not. What would stop someone else from making you an offer that didn't have the remotest idea of how to pay for the horse; OR even better if they knew they could resell it at a profit within 7 days.

snowbird, having been one of those kids making refrigerator calls (thank agains Kels
), I feel justified in saying that I don't think I had a criminal mind. Having said that I certainly knew if caught there would be consequences.
And what stopped me from participating in ringing doorbells at night and running away was the time I saw a group of kids do that. And an elderly woman who obviously lived alone and was terribly frightened came to the door.
flshgordon deserves an apology. And the girl is lucky it was flshgordon calling up her mother and not the police.

The "refrigerator running" kind of pranks have nothing like the consequences of this girl's e-mails. Not only is she hurting people by scaring them, she is stating intent to commit fraud at least or felony at most ("stealing" a horse at 1/10th purchase price), cyber-stalking people (saying she KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED), threatens to take our horses whether we like it or not (is THAT going to make someone feel good???) and a multitude of other things like this. If it were only of the "refrigerator running" variety, do you think the police would take an interest? No, this person upset and scared our original poster, whether she actually carried out her original threat to take the horse unauthorized whether the owner wanted her to or not (called "staling" in normal conversation). No, this IS serious. It hurts us where we care, our livelihood (horse sales), our comfort and safety (where we live being known to obvious thieves), and our lifestyle (keeping being able to sell horses on the internet). WAY too far-reaching for a "refrigerator running" kind of prank.

I would also agree with the others in disagreeing with Snowbird. Something like this isn't 'innocent'. She is maybe young and DUMB, but she needs to realize what she is doing is NOT RIGHT. Because by saying she's coming, no matter what, knows where you live, etc... That COULD be very serious and we're not mind readers in knowing that she's just a kid that doesn't know any better. This is the internet and we all know how dangerous it is, so things like this must be taken seriously.

Wow, thanks for that
It was a joke, and I knew Bea would get it. If you look at all the other threads I've posted on, I overlook 99% of spelling errors. I think that a BRAND (Fridge) having SO MUCH impact on every-day life (that people now use that brand to SPELL the actual word) is amazing. I want to start a company that has that much power over something like SPELLING!
And Snowbird, no one said I was perfect.
But yes, I have to disagree with you saying that it is just a rite of passage.

If you read what she said a little more carefully you will see that I was not given an option to turn down an "offer" so to speak. It was just "I'm taking the horse and I'm only paying $1000 like it or not". I don't spend 24 hours a day in front of this horse's stall so for all I know she could show up and leave a check taped to the wall.
The horse could end up missing and it would have nothing to do with these circumstances. Horses get stolen out of pastures by lots of horse thieves.
Yes they do....but guess who the police will be looking for first. It's a little more serious than your refrigerator getting stolen

Actually Frigidaire is the brand; fridge, according to dictionary, is a noun meaning refrigerator whose etymology is from shortening and altering the original word.
The "I know where you live" part would have completely undone me. For me that took it from the realm of prank to potential threat. Maybe having had a note on my car late one night many years ago makes me a little sensitive about words such as those.

Me too! As long as it's honest and legit, like you did...not nasty, like some. "Fridge" is one of those I have to think about every time I spell refrigerator. And I'd MUCH rather get one polite correction than be wrong forever. Do you know how long I pronounced it ofTen . . . thinking I was making the extra effort to pronounce it correctly...until I was, corrected!?
