Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I would do some type of rescue/rehab work with horses and dogs. Not a traditional rescue, but one where I would take in those that could be rehabed and resold to as a good a home as I can find. Would probably have a few lawn ornaments from private rescue as I am a sucker for a sob story, but probably wouldn't take in any more than I could personally care for.

Would have tons of spayed/neutered barn cats.

    Would have an indoor.

And a small on-the-beach beach shanty, obviously not HR, but that about completes my list. Don't need new vehicles or a fancy house. I'm pretty low-maintenance.

Ouch, I had thought as well... Not much, really. Re-do my current stable (nothing really fancy, I would like to add some heated water system and a new roof, things like that).

There is place for 80 horses in 3 wings (2 wings would go for rescues and one for DH jumping horses), then I would buy surrounding land up to 500 acres and make nice fencing for every paddock, then re-do other outbuilding (near the house) for wildlife rescues.

Indoor arena and outdoor arena for DH, trailer and a good car to pull, and that's about it. Oh, yes, a haybarn, of course, but it would cost only few thousands so not a big deal.

Probably I would need to call MajMeadowMorgans and offer her to pay more, but my trainer would be happy to work for less so it would balance the books

DH in turn is dreaming about land somewhere in Spain or South of France to keep horses during the winter That would be a posh thing, to fly them over 2X year... Can I ask for another lottery ticket?

I think Morgan needs to weigh in here and let us know her intentions. Morgan, who's it gonna be?

First I would donate the bulk of it to WorldVision to help children around the world, and also to Sunshine Horses to keep the organization going strong so they can continue to rescue horses. After that....

          1. Pay off my Subaru, let it become my husband's car, and buy myself a truck and trailer
          2. Buy a roomy but moderately sized log-cabin style house in western North Carolina (or Idaho--I know, big difference!) with lots of natural woodwork inside, a big fireplace, and bay windows overlooking...
          3. expansive pastures, backing up to mountainous public lands with miles of trails.
          4. Build a 10-stall barn with a bathroom and spacious tack room... nothing too fancy, just very functional, complete with hot water in the wash racks
          5. Build a big, heated, INDOOR arena with great footing, as well as an outdoor ring.
          6. Buy 4 horses-- one big, kind hearted, dark bay OTTB; one 8-9 year old experienced hunter/jumper; one chill, 17-handish, big-boned draft cross to play around on; and one tough, level-headed gelding for overnight trails.
          7. Adopt 2 rescues to rehab and give happy retirements
          8. Fill 2 stalls with boarders who can look after the farm when I travel (see number 13), and the final 2 with bomb-proof, beginner friendly horses (for number 14).
          9. Hire a fantastic trainer to work with me on a regular basis (for my horses' sakes )
          10. Adopt an australian shepherd, several barn cats, and a handful of mutts from local rescues
          11. Take up foxhunting!!
          12. Buy all the John Deere tractors, 4-wheelers, and video equipment my husband's heart could ever desire (I know, he has a strange mix of interests).
          13. Travel to a new country twice a year... Brazil, Chile, Honduras, Peru, Ecuador... okay, so mostly South America! But also Italy, Africa, and Indonesia, etc.
          14. Eventually develop a program for inner city youth to come work around the barn and learn how to care for and ride horses.
          15. Improve my photography skills and take artistic photos of my animals, surroundings, and life.
Please consider adopting a horse from NY Sunshine Horses!

            I like this game!

            1. Fund my retirement. I like my job, so I'd keep working, but without the worry of losing the job.
            2. Pay off my home.
            3. Ditch the manufactured home and build the home of my dreams - small, modest, sustainable and green.
            4. Donate a bunch to a variety of educational, social/political and animal groups.
            5. A bunch of little things, like a paint job for my trailer (it's fine...don't need a new one), extra footing for the arena, etc.
            6. Buy a second horse to be my steady eddy all-around competition horse. I'd still ride my current mare, who I love bunches, but not worry about what I'd do if she needs to be retired. (She's 18).
            7. Take the trip I have planned to Disneyland, but stay at the Disneyland Hotel instead of the cheap hotel we always stay at.

We don't need much and we have simple tastes. Worst problem would be deciding which charity to help 1) one in Africa for education and AIDS ed (done), 2) Brooke Hospital for Animals (done - helping beasts of burden around the world)), 3) Charity for aged people,
              4) Don't know yet, probably something to do with society's most vulnerable. 5) Family - help with mortgages but not much else. You have to paddle you own canoe for the msot part in this life.

Have some spending money just for the heck of it.

I would guess there are professionals who help with these decisions?

Oops think I messed up. Meant to post Fun! Actually I won $117 on lotto tickets from gifts this year. Too bad its already gone...

I would pay off student loans, pay off DH's soon to be student loans, pay off debt () THEN purchase one nice cute house with decent yard for the dog. rescue a few poms from pomeranian rescue to keep current pom busy (and tired!). Also purchase time-share in CO for DH to snowboard (he doesn't ask for much). I would actually keep my horse where he is with my wonderful trainer but I think I would purchase a nice jumper prospect and actually get to show both!!!

We would take a 3-year honeymoon trip back to Aruba, invest some, purchase a nice 2-horse truck and trailer, and make a nice donation to a deserving charity or 2. Yep, I can dream, can't I?

Buy beautiful farmland in the Charlottesville VA area. Must have direct access to miles and miles of trails. Start foxhunting.

Build a completely green/energy efficient Dwell home and state of the art barn w/indoor and outdoor rings.

Take my mare to the Middle East for a long trekking vacation in the land of her ancestors. Would love to circle the Pyramids while we're at it.

                  Seed an Arabian rescue/retiree foundation.

-Buy high dollar camera and all accessories so I can get NICE pictures of me and my horse at shows of just around the farm and then I can use for amazing wildlife pictures while pretending to be a photographer
-Hire professional photographer and pay them very well to come at any moment to take pictures at shows and stuff...kinda like a personal paparazzi but use my camera so I would have all print originals and only have to put name on pictures for photo credit
-Pay off any student loans which may be acquired (still apply for scholarships since it's kept me out of debt so far )
-By lots of land in Maine (or anywhere in upper New England)
-Build scaled down version on the log cabin I made blue prints for and make sure it is as eco friendly as they come
-Build matching barn also eco friendly with only 4 stalls but with all the UTD features, equipment and fully loaded with premium feed/hay, indoor, outdoor, full set of jumps, and some nice field hunter fences on property
-Hire someone to take care of said farm since I want to be able to travel with no fear of my horses having problems
                      -By summer home in Alaska
-New Truck/Trailer with air-ride for long hauls
-Keep my current horse forever and start foxhunts/field hunter trials, let my mom keep her horse at my barn if she so chooses, purchase a made hunter since I've never had that experience and keep one open in case something pops up.
                      -Buy 2 New Foundlands
-Save the rest with occasional splurging on the things (horse and not-horse related) I've always wanted.

It's been fun reading everyone's "dreams." Fun to see some pretty responsible thinking, actually. Why don't folks like you guys ever win these things???

I have a running conversation with a friend of mine about what would you do with a $60 million lottery win? His first answer was to take all of his friends on a trip to the Lake of the Ozarks! I about laughed my arse off and asked him what he planned to do with the remainder of the $59, 999, 998? ha ha

As for me, I would pay off my farm, add on to my house, build a bigger barn tricked-out with everything needed for a barn, build an indoor arena ... and send a whole big bunch of it to Sunkissed Acres. Invest some. Give more to charities. Buy a pony for the granddaughter and another nice trail horse for me.

I would keep my job because I like it, and I would invest a huge chunk into it so my son would have a great company to keep going after I retire.
