Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

No fireworks tonight. Our "exceptional drought" has made them illegal, and I'm not crying over that!!!
"And now," cried Max, "let the wild rumpus start!"

the stupid fireworks started here around 8:00 and it sounds like a war zone, driving my dog crazy. Seriously, I don't remember people shooting fireworks on New Year's Eve when I was younger. It is EXTREMELY annoying and unneccessary. Hope the horsies are ok...

I live in a small "equestrian community" not the nice ones you see in magazines, the more red neck kind, and I love it. So no worries about fireworks here!

My dog is not happy, but he is only upset about the VERY LARGE booms now. I have set up my room so he is near me but cannot lean over me and drool on me. He is not happy about that and tried to find a way to climb into my bed through the walls of all the other rooms that touch this one. I am trapped behind a piano bench and a piece of plywood, but he seems more calm when he gives up hope I can stop the noise.

Laptops and dog drool do not mix.

We are not dry so no fires. Yeah!!!!

This is my first New Year's at this farm. The neighbors across the street and over the hill are shooting off fireworks. It's really nice so far. They're close enough to see, far enough away not to make me fret.

Well, there were a few shotgun blasts from the neighboring farm, but none close enough to cause a concern. They shoot over there all the time and have a private range set up for themselves. Last year someone over there cut loose with a full-auto.

I can't get over it - nearly midnight here and not a sound.

Don't suppose the 20-degree temperature tonight has anything to do with it, do you?

It sounds like a frigging war here. All around me are fireworks and gunshots. I just went up to check and I have three ready to jump out of their skin. I hope they don't colic. I re-hayed and put some lights and radio on.
                    Happy freakin' new year.

Are you "The Quin the Eskimo"? Or is it just really cold up there

Damn dog has gone into defcom level II. The economy has not hampered the ability to but fireworks or bullets.

                        1. It really IS that cold here in the midwest. The snow/ice all melted because it got up to nearly 60 on Monday and Tuesday, but the temps dropped like a rock last night.

                        2. The song was one of the things I thought of when I decided to call My Little Pony "Quin". I actually named him Harlequin, but I generally call him Quin. Quin the Eskimo. Not only does it still sound like a gang gun fight around here, but now of course I hear the sirens heading to the car accidents that have no doubt occurred! Gotta love the stupid revelers.

One Corgi is hiding under the bed and the other is standing at the slider barking his head off. The cats don't even notice. It's been going on for about 3 hours now which me off because they are illegal in my city. I guess the cops are busy chasing down the drunk drivers...

Our neighbors managed to run from about 8:30pm until a bit after 1am. The one group had a really nice, professional-grade display. The horses startled at the first few, and some of the bigger booms later on, but then settled pretty well. Of course, they are rather used to them, as people frequently have fireworks "just because."

Fortunately, my neighbors are all sensible and courteous; they did the fireworks very safely, in appropriate locations, and two families had their teenage kids periodically popping in at the horse properties to check that no-one was getting badly spooked.

I expect there will be more, smaller displays through the weekend.

County, brrr! It was too cold at 34 F for me to watch the neighbors' fireworks outside for very long at a pop! I enjoyed them much more through the bedroom window with a nice cup of very Irishified coffee in hand.

Ugh my POOR dogs. They ran THROUGH a door to get upstairs. Granted this was one of those sliding divider doors and they are 130 and 50 lbs so it didn't take much lol.

I could not get the puppy out from under the bed though. She was shaking like a leaf and hyperventilating. I honestly would have drugged her but didn't have any ace on hand at the house. The cats hid under the bed at first but once the BF and I went upstairs and sat with them everyone but above mentioned puppy seemed to calm down.

I went out and brought the horses in early before any fireworks went off, so hopefully they didn't get too upset inside the barn. I wish I had them at home so I could have went out and checked on them though.

Not a bang, not a boom, rather a change from the apartment complex where the neighbors in the complex next door would be rattling off small arms fire until the wee hours, and yours truly slept on the floor in the hallway Just In Case. Fourth of July on the other hand, went on for several days with a nice quality display from a house two three ridges over. I like the farmette.

I'm with county - we were the ones setting off the fireworks.

My horse is a couple of miles away, but the three dogs and my cat who were all right here handled it just fine. Two of the dogs sat outside with us and watched; the third went back inside, but I think it was just because he has no winter coat and was cold - it was -5 here last night. When I checked on the cat, he was curled up on his favorite chair half asleep, booms and bangs and all.

Not ALL animals are freaked out by fireworks...

We will be tonight. The first year we lived here for the 4th, I figured everyone around us would be shooting them off so we might as well. (My husband loves fireworks). The horses did fine - I fed them extra hay and kept an eye on everyone. My stallion stood out in his paddock and watched. Since then, we've done them every new year's and Christmas. I always worry about whoever is newest here (whoever I'm fostering at the time), but they always seem to be fine after watching my guys ignore them.

Right now, our neighbor is setting off black cats next to the small pasture. Both horses aren't even raising their heads....

All of that said, the first year we had moved back to Texas, my guys were stalled and went nuts at all the noise. It was probably because the neighbors were shooting them off OVER the barn and the horses couldn't see what was going on, only hear the sound. I make sure the fireworks never go near the barn and everyone can see what's going on.
