Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Need Some Advise

I moved to North Carolina in March and wanted to get back into riding. I quickly found a small stable down the road from my house that specialized in hunter training. The owner is an amazing lovely person, but I was never crazy about the instructor/trainer she had. I started looking around at other stables and interviewing instructors to find the right match for me.

In the meantime, they had a 1/2 Arabian Mare that had been sitting in a field for a year, because everyone was afraid of her. So I approached the owner to find out if I could work with her. She quickly agreed. I worked with her in the evenings as that was the best time for me based on my work schedule. I fell in love. Thirty days in and I again approached the owner about purchasing the mare. I offered her what I believed to be a fair price at the time of $2000 and explained my goal to move her to another facility where I could work with a dressage and jumping trainer. She and seen me take quite a few falls from this mare and laugh when I told her I would pay $2000 for her. She said since I had put all the work in on her and she just wanted to see her go to a good a home she would take $1500. The trainer was cut out completely from the sale.

When I was moving her a week later the trainer came up to me and said that Bella wasn't even worth the meat on her bones and she was going to laugh when I brought her back. I let the comment go.

Fast-Forward, I just took her to her first show a little over a month ago. Local hunter show. She cleaned up. All first place ribbons. The trainer was there with some of her students. I heard from some people that she was going around telling people she had trained her. I again said nothing.

Since then she has been bad mouthing me all over town. She told the owner of the local feed store that I cheated her out of her training fee. And called me a bunch of vulgar names. I'm new to town and I don't want my reputation to be bad off the bat. I have been told though that people know what type of person she is and take everything she says with a grain salt. Should I approach her about her accusations or should I leave it alone.

Also, on a side note I want to purchase a new saddle pad for christmas. I'm thinking of investing in one of the more expensive brands like thin or fleeceworks. Any advice?

It's hard to not want vindication, but your show scores & ribbons will speak for themselves. "They" already know who/what she is. You rise above and shine!

Pay her no mind and go about your business. It sounds like sour grapes to me. You've already shown you're a better person by not rising to her bait to give her something else to denigrate you with.

There is no reasoning with vindictive, crazy... umm.. person. Sorry, you would get a better result and be less upset reasoning with a rock. If I were you, I would leave it be, and in time the 'trainer' will get hers.

Congratulations on your hard earned success with this horse!

Great job with your horse, we expect photos.

I'd let it lie. People like that can't hide who they are. Anyone who listens to her probably won't be worth your time, she is doing you a favor.

          Enjoy and have fun!

Meh, the people whose opinions are worth anything already know what sort of person she is, and anyone that pays attention to her isn't anyone you need to worry about. So ignore her, let her run her mouth. She's just digging her own hole. Now, more importantly, pictures!

Thanks everyone. My normal approach would be to ignore the comments. I guess hanging out with this younger generation at my barn got me a wound up. I will defiantly be sharing some pictures. I'm so proud of her. She has come a long way from the first day pulled her out of the field. It has defiantly been a group effort and I am so thankful for finding the trainers that were really able to help me get her where she is today. I'm a competent rider and would have eventually got her here, but they really worked together with me to put a program together that served both of us.

We went to our first dressage show this month. She scored 62% and a fifth place ribbon. Our halt was very sloppy and she was stiff to the left, but otherwise we rode it exactly as I was hoping. I am more then pleased with the score and the ribbon. It feels so good to again be working with a horse and actually be able to accomplish goals you set out. Cause sometimes in real life it feels like you never get ahead.

I would carefully pick a couple occasions, maybe the feed store guy, some other folks... Say how proud you are of this mare, especially since you did it on your own, without help from any trainers. :-) positive, no bashing.

Which is not true, she has already praised the team and trainers who helped her in her posts. In any case, I am sure that any time someone praises the horse the OP will give credit where credit is due.

When I read the original post, I thought you paid too much for the horse. So, I'd say they probably thought they were taking advantage of you. I'm delighted the two of you are happy together.

Sadly, bad mouthing is all too prevalent in the horse world. It seems like some people feel like criticizing the abilities of others puts them on some sort of pedestal. I make a point to distance myself from the negative nellies and just enjoy my horse. Do your thing, be safe, and have fun....and congrats on your success!

Thanks everyone... Here's two pictures of my girl. They are both from a friends farm this summer. We went to a small clinic there and stayed for a few extra days to go trail riding and spend time together.

http://imgur.com/NNm1UHB,1A1Zyg4 Okay please don't judge my awful equitation or clothing. We were going to go swimming with our horses in the lake in the back ground, but her horse was acting crazy which was making my girl nervous so at the last minute we threw on saddles and bridles to get some energy out in the ring. The pants I was wearing over my bathing suit were so thin and the strap was rubbing my leg... So please ignore me and just look at her. After 15 min of trot work we stripped the tack and headed for the water. It was a blast.

http://imgur.com/NNm1UHB,1A1Zyg4#1 This is me and her at the clinic. It was different and really a neat idea. My friend had a local judge come out and they put on a kind of mock show. At the end of each class we talked about how to get better noticed. Why you were scored what you were scored. A bunch of different stuff. The judge gave me a hard time about her feathers on her fetlocks, but I love them and I'm not ready to part with them.

Do you guys have any idea what breed she might. I always say she is 1/2 arabian cause her trot and canter is all arab. My hunter trainer says arab/welsh. My Dressage trainer calls her a Heinz 57. Not that I care I just love to hear what people think.

Most everyone probably knows what that mare, and that trainer are all about. She was known as "unrideable" and "untrainable" before. That trainer probably told them all about her years ago. Just pay it no mind. Hard not to tell the truth and zap the trainer, but best if you let your results speak for themselves. People know about that trainer's propensity to take credit where none is due- they might not run up to you and say so- but they know. Smile, sit straight, pat your pony. Congrats on your success thus far, and keep on truckin'

Push the ignore button on the bad mouthing trainer. Really when someone bad mouths someone it is really more of a reflection upon them, not you. Keep in the positive and never let the bad behavior of others turn your behavior as well. The proof is in the pudding and your results speak for themselves.

Glad you and your mare are doing so well!!!
