Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Kicked! Another lucky:unlucky sort of thread (and bruise contest challenge)

First, let me confess this was entirely my fault. Of course it was -- as it always is with horses.

Last Thursday I received love kick from my wonderful 17-hand, 4 y/o, steel-shod warmblood. It resulted from my poor handling during a playful jog around the pasture after a long day and trailer ride to the vet school (where he'd just passed his recheck with flying colors) followed by several stops on the return trip. We needed some exercise, things got frolicky and passagy, I got careless, he thought we were celebrating, did his patented spin-kick maneuver -- WHAM!

Four days later, here's my leg:

    http://s73.photobucket.com/user/hfou...25438.jpg.html

And now you've all seen me in my underwear.

Lots of ice and ibuprofen and sulking for me. I won't even attempt to describe the pain. However, I do feel lucky that he found the fattest part of my body instead of my knee or my elbow or my face.

Anyone care to enter the "gigantic and spectacular bruise" contest?

      Eeeeyowch

I don't have any good pics of horse-induced bruises, but I had a wallop just like that from my mare when I was a kid. I was cleaning her pasture and she was running around and bucking and kicked out as she ran past me (I call that a drive-by) and nailed me in the thigh. I had my 8th grade dance the next day and couldn't walk! I still have a dent in my leg from that, which looks like gnarly cellulite. The gift that keeps on giving. I can't complain though because if she had nailed me in the knee I'd probably be crippled right now.

Maybe some topical arnica would help you, along with rest and ice? Do you have access to one of those fancy Game Ready machines? That may be helpful as you heal as well. Good luck!

No, I don't have a Game Ready machine but I have numerous ice packs in the rotation and I just fasten them on with an ace bandage. I also have a few different arnica products and I will switch to that eventually. Right now I am using Voltaren gel (double dipping on the NSAIDs), though the ice seems to help more than anything.

I have a picture of a bruise on my butt from a few years ago when I fell off my mare. I used to think that one was spectacular but now it looks tiny in comparison. I do have a permanent lump from that one, though it's buried in my butt fat and no one knows it's there except for me, Mr. Larkspur and, most recently, a sadistic massage therapist who thought she'd found a knot -- um.... NOT!

          Ouch!

I heard somewhere along the way that a bruise bigger than a couple inches across should be seen my a doctor. Due to potential blood clots.

I have never followed that advice but your leg looks bad! lol

Can't talk though. I got struck across both calves by a then 2.5 yr old big filly. I turned around to pay attention to boss and she got me when she pawed/struck out with front leg. Don't have pics of those black bruised legs!

I got nailed in the side /armpit area by a "drive by" but fairly intentional kick that I dodged. Was attempting to catch a gelding ( 2-3 yrs tb racehorse) in a small yard for the farrier. Farrier thought he nailed me in the head. Somewhere I have a pic of those bruises.

          Jingles for quick recovery!

This was a day after it happened (as you can imagine it only got worse)

This was about a week and a half later. That swelling turned into scar tissue and is still there 4 years later (although thankfully not nearly as big!!)

That is a gnarly bruise and i hope it stops hurting soon! Ouch!

Whoa! That looks impressive in a creepy, morbid way.

I took an un-scheduled dismount years ago when a quail flew up my horse's butt. Landed on my side on a log - ended up severely bruised with a cracked rib. I had a routine doctors appointment that I had to go to a couple days later and of course my ribs were pretty colorful (not to mention painful). My regular doctor was on maternity leave and was quite familiar with horse related "incidents". The other doctor grilled me relentlessly on being a victim of domestic violence - being in denial, protecting the attacker, not pressing charges.

I should have taken pictures but that would have involved a "boob" shot. Not something I want circling the inter-webz.

I have been kicked a few times, mostly when I was much younger, but my worst bruise came from being stepped on. A similar spot to the OP's. The mare spooked and then lost her footing in some rough plow, I thought she was going down, so chose to bail. My bailing allowed her to regain her balance....by stepping on my left thigh and rt heal. THANK GOD it was a plowed field and my body had somewhere soft to depress into or my leg and foot very well may have been BADLY broken.

My bruise was as large in area and had a TREMENDOUS knot. I didn't go see the doctor. Ice, advil, arnica and a short period of rest. I ended up with a divot in my thigh, most noticeable when I squat. I'm guessing I tore a good bit of hamstring. That area, 4 years later, still hurts if I over do it. And it's the first area to want to cramp if I am low on Potassium.

Healing wishes. I have a photo....somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

I was trimming my Sammie's feet, (I literally sit on the ground- he's short!) and he pulled his hind foot out of my hands, and promptly stepped on my shin. BIG bruise all down the side.... he got smacked for THAT one! Also taught me not to trim feeties in shorts....

Unfortunately no pics, but my worst bruise came from when I fell off and landed on the corner of a concrete step. I had a huge bruise on my lower back, and still have a divot there, and I think there was nerve damage since if I touch it, I can't feel it on the surface, but light pressing sends pain through my back. (Probably should have gone to the dr for that one :/ )
And the only kick i've had so far hit me on the side--I did have my regular dr check that out since I had to go see her a few days later anyway. It didn't really hurt, but she said I was really lucky b/c it easily could have done internal damage if it was a few inches up or down.

In that case I have missed a lot of doctor's appointments!

I have switched to regular aspirin, since it is a blood thinner as well as anti-inflammatory/analgesic.

Don't take a blood thinner (ie Aspirin) -it will prolong the blood oozing into the site. I would also take it easy on the Advil/Aleve family as they can also prolong bleeding. You need ice and Arnica for 48 hours, then you can use the NSAIDs to help resolve the bruise. Try to keep it up for a day or so.
My daughter's horse fell in the old trailer years ago and splintered the hardwood centre partition. (I said it was an old trailer, didn't I?). She kicked me hard in the thigh as I was trying to extricate her, and while the initial bruise was impressive, the discolouration which tracked down to my ankle as the bruise resolved was REALLY spectacular. I also have an indent at the site of the kick.

My biggest was from when a horse bit me in the armpit and I was wearing a tank top. It was huge.

WOW!!!! Those are some impressive bruises!!!! I thought the one my pony gave me was bad! On a side note I went to the dermatologist for my yearly mole check while I had my gigantic "Africa" bruise and my Dr. almost freaked! She told me I should have been seen for it due to the chance of a blood clot. I still have scar tissue that makes me look like I have a saddle bag on that thigh to this day. My trainer coined it the Africa bruise due to its resemblence to the country. If you scroll through the album you can see its progression.

I had one very similar to yours a few years ago. 2 Mares got in a snit and I got in the way. One trip to the ER for x ray as I could not bear weight on my leg. Then 2 days later Orthopedic surgeon took off 1 liter of blood in surgery. Sadly at follow up appointment had another half liter that they aspirated in the office. I still sport a lovely hoof shaped dent in my ample thigh. I will have to look for pics when I get home tonight.

many many years ago in a lesson, I was riding a known rearer. He went up and I must have been leaning forward trying to turn him. His neck and my glasses bumped and I had a HUGE black eye!

this happened on a Friday night and by Monday it was impressive. It looked like someone clocked me in the face. Everyone around me guessed it was a horse-related injury except the folks I had a meeting with that day.'

and I had to stop a cube buddy from telling everyone my DH hit me.

Impressive bruise! I think any of us who have been around horses long enough have more than our fair share of war stories!

I had a bruise pretty much same place as OPs with a bit of road rash as well due to unplanned dismount. Also led to me peeing blood that night!

Worst injury I had and one that had quite a few in the hospital coming in to see my injury, got bucked off young TB mare and stepped on, my sternum. Lovely hoof print between my breasts. Led to 60% loss of both lung capacity (yep came about as close to dyeing as you can!) and two chest tubes and 6 day stay in ICU. Thankfully the lungs sealed up, no surgery required and no lasting scars. Surgeon was amazed I did not have any broken ribs. ER doc probably saved my life, it happened on a Sat, he was going back over the films trying to see if there were any fractures following Mon, none, but found the lung blow out, 2% at the time. Called me to say go to Dr. NOW, went to GP pulse was weak and thready, immediately to ER where was whisked away for emergency chest tubes. Fun time with horses!
