Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

The kids love calling him that. It makes them giggle.

Cool has gotten turned into Coolish, Coolio and an assortment of other names not suitable for a family-friendly BB. His star is S-shaped so imagine something starting with that letter and ending in "head."

Star, who actually has a blaze (one I always thought of as comet-shaped, until DMK's comment about her horse), somehow got turned into "Dar-Dar" by some of the barn members. His show name is "Aldebaran" (an actual star, one in the sky--not Hollywood) which the announcers somehow turn into "how do you pronounce that?"

Conny is also known as Killer, and will answer to it, since I've been using it equally with Conny his whole life. Makes people snicker when I call him that, since he's all of 14.1 h on a good day.

Casper is known as Crazy Horse. Unfortunately, when I first got him that name fit him perfectly. Not so much now but it's stuck, so that's what we call him.

Not a horse, but my Great Dane Lexi I call Pookie Butt. Why? I have NO idea, but I've been calling her that since she was a puppy.

Peggy, I think Star's blaze is more comet looking than, uh, a bodily fluid...

However "Aldebaran" sounds familiar. Is that a name for something other than a star (because we can safely say I do not know the names of any stars unless they are called "sun"!)
Your crazy is showing. You might want to tuck that back in.

OK. Pistol - georgeous palomino QH who didn't realize he was gelded I called Handsome Sampsom. Or "Hance" for short. "Hey, Hance, how ah ya?"

My girlfriend's OTQH was named Hancock Venture, barn name was the uninspiring "Sonny" but to us he was affectionately and forever the "Magic Dingus" because he was always hanging low.

For some reason our bratty chincoteague palomino pony was dubbed "Pone Pone".

Our pony Vegas is often referred to as "Veggie." My mare, Dee, is "The Black Mare." My other mare, Murphy, was called "The Giraffe" because she liked to stretch up to look over the top of the stall wall, and she liked to eat leaves off the trees.

My horse's show name is Alesia, but she has been called:

                  Ally (her "official" name)
                  Tank
Studly (for the pony stud neck she sports when in good weight)

My husband sometimes calls Clancy "Clancy-pantyhose". He thinks he's a little girly sometimes. He also calls Star "Star-bar Samolian" - he's got a thing for making up odd names I guess.

My gelding, Vegas, was known as Veg, Veggers, Vegs, Vegie, Vega-saurus Rex, Bubba, Geek, Geeker, Toad or Toady. But most often, Poo. No, not Pooh as Winnie. Rather I shortened Poopie Head. It wasn't out of the ordinary to find him up from a nap with a flattened ball of poo stuck to his face. Liked to use his messes as pillow. I miss my Geeker!

My new mare's registered name is Miss Classy Delight. We immediately started calling her in from pasture shouting "Yo! Classy D!" And somehow I started calling her Classy-mo which evolved into Mo-Mo. Oh, yeah, can't forget Hussy when she's being rather mareish!

My poor old jumper probably has a serious identity crisis. When he first came to my old trainers barn he was T4 (he came from a horse trader who's first name started with a T- all the ones we got from him that didn't already have a name got a T. Then T2, T3, and so on). Problem was, there had already been a T4, so he got called T4-2. I know, original, isn't it. It went from T4-2, to "the brown horse at the end of the aisle". That went to "the brown horse".

I was out riding him one day and out slipped "Charlie the brown horse", hence he became Charlie. My dad called him Chuck, I called him CharWee. Somehow CharWee became Bubbee, which became Bubbaloo.

Poor horse is all confused. His official name is Charlie, but I still call him Bubbee.

Not a horse name, but animal anyhow. We have a cat named "Baxter." We used to live in an apartment complex where the manager lived on-site with his young 3-year old daughter. I once heard her calling Baxter, "Sylvester," which was weird because she looks NOTHING like Sylvester - she's a hairy Maine Coon type. Anyhow, I told the apartment manager that the cat's name was "Baxter." He said, "Oh, I know, I just think it sounds too much like "Bastard" and I don't want my daughter saying that." It stuck - to this day, we call her Little Fat Bastard. She knows it's her name - it fits.

My horses all have boring barn names - nothing fun...No, WAIT! Peanut (registered name Seville) is, um, very easy to tell when she's in estrus. So she gets called "Hoochie" sometimes. Rosie is Rose-Monster (because she once chased my friend Amy who came to visit the cute cuddly little 4-month old filly - told me she was being a monster that day).

oh my gosh, so many. i have problem w/nicknaming my animals.

                            hannah is regularly called:

                            banana boat
                            banana butt
                            hanner b
                            miss b
                            citizen b
                            senator b
                            bubble
                            punkin'
                            punky brewster
                            senor mudpack
                            citizen dirty
                            and, my favorite, "son"
                            (yes, she's a mare)

further, depending on the song that's playing on the radio as i groom, my barn mates are often tortured with ridiculous chatter such as.... "who's my big blister in the sun?" or, "hannah b crazy train!"

                            it's a sickness.

Indian Summer is either "Summer Dummer" or "pumpkinhead". And I sing an awful, made up "pumpkinhead" song to her a lot lately - she is on stall rest and its our entertainment while I wrap her legs. I really don't know why I started calling her pumpkinhead - it was around this halloween so I guess I just had that on my mind!

                              Inca is "Inca Dinka."

My other 3 don't have to suffer the humiliation of any horrible names. They simply go by their barn names of Magic, Tomboy (actually her registered name!) and Wylie.

I used to own a very beautiful, very well-bred bay mare that was an absolute PITA. She was known as "Pyscho Bay Mare" or PBM for short.

Like most people here (it seems) I never call anything by it's given name:

My Lab Anna is Do-ers, or Pooterkins. My cats Bethany and Indiana are Squibby-Kitty and Butt-head (respectively).

My yearling-- well, my sister refuses to acknowledge her nick-name, though I don't see anything weird about it. My sister calls her yearling So-So (Sophie), and I made a joke, "watch, one day Roxy will become Ro-Ro." My sister protested loudly, but unfortunately, letting those simple syllables roll off my lips started an addiction! Roxy is now my Ro. To Sophab (my sister), she is a more acceptable (it seems) Roo.

                                        My fiance, Shane: Turkey.

I will let Sophab's nickname lie since she posts here too, and would kill me

                                        • Sundance (22 years young) is Old Man, Handsome, Dusty butt or Good lookin. I also affectionately call him Stop Drop and Roll - cause next to eating, that's his favorite activity of all! Minstrel's Tune (9yo appendix QH) came with the barn name of Blue which morphed to Blueboo (cause of all the ways he managed to 'ding' his hide - and worse) or BooBoo (same reasons) - and when he's acting up, he's Bluebutt. My mare, Pirates n' Dreams (TB) came to me with the barn name of Classy, but I most often call her Pretty Girl or Princess (and is she ever.... she has a way of looking down her nose at EVERYTHING she doesn't approve of )
