Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Florida bound!! Get me out of the cold!

Its too cold up here anymore!! I need a change, I'm thinking palm trees and sun 365 days a year! My dream is to sit on the beach on Christmas! Now I just need to find a way to live down there!

You would not have wanted to be on the beach today....I'm about 25 miles inland, and it was 51 with HOWLING winds today.

That being said, at least we can ride *almost* every day...I don't know how y'all stay motivated in the winter!!

I'm outside of Jax and it was 28 at my barn this morning.
It never got above 52 today with a wind chill in the low 40's
so I don't think you want to do the beach .

I'm heading to Wellington for a week next month to hang out with a friend who lives there. I lived in Wellington before getting married and buying a house in Loxahatchee. I'm back in MN now, but sometimes I still miss FL....especially on days like this when the high temp is -1.

I'm going down just after christmas for couple days to visit my aunt and uncle in Naples. I can't wait.

Believe it or not 50 degrees would be a sauna compared to the 17 degrees, even lower with the wind chill we had this morning. And did i mention it was windy!? The grass was so frozen yesterday after all the freezing rain and sleep I didn't put any horses out. Afraid the old guys at the barn would take a fall. Better safe then sorry.

I always "wanted" to live in FL, but after moving to S. FL for school this year I can't imagine anywhere with more amazing weather for a horse enthusiast. I love Middleburg, but I am very, very cold during my break.

                  yep

I for one am glad I got out of Montana last week. UGH! It was -34 the other day!!!

My parents' place is comfortably in the 20's and I am going down to visit my old stomping grounds in Fl (hi Flightcheck!) around my birthday, I think. Look forward to even warmer weather.

After 10 degree days in MT, 50 is definitely a heat wave. And it would still beat this 20 degree stuff here in hotlanta.

But then again, I grew up there so I'm a little biased about how great Fl is...

Dont tell my FL neighbors but I have to laugh when they start to blanket(unclipped horses) at 50 degrees! My NY horses were out yesterday for a good part of the day and it was single digits with wind chills well below zero! (pssst.....most had no blankets AND no shivering!) Happily I wont have to deal with that any longer this winter!

Just remember, we have four seasons: kinda hot, sorta hot, real hot, and damn it's hot......

I purchased a horse from Michigan a few years ago, and the first time I tried to put a blanket on him he looked at me in complete disbelief. Had to take it off of him. He wanted absolutely NONE of it.

                      Still doesn't.

You don't have to shovel heat!

My husband and I want to move South. When people complain about it being so hot my husband always sez...you don't have to shovel heat.

We have had 39" of snow already in December. It was 50 below on Sunday with 50mph winds. Yesterday it made it into the single digits below zero. Of course now that it is warming up we are getting more snow 4-6" today, 4-6" tomorrow, etc, etc. And I haven't been able to ride for almost a week.

I may get sick of the heat. But, I would at least like to try it.

I have to say, the winters here always make me want to stay (and then when the hurricanes, heat, and mosquitos come back I want to go back North!).

Sunday we went on a 2 hour trail ride - it was 79 degrees and sunny! My fam is coming down todya for the holidays to get out of the cold.

We are 45 min from Wellington, 5 min from the beach, and 15 from horse country (well, the S FL version - Weston/Davie). I am going to take the family to the beach tonight for dinner.

Honestly though, I have become the biggest wimp since we moved here - I travel for work and was in Tulsa last month and nearly died! I am just not equipped anymore to deal with the cold - I'm just too spoiled.

I have spent a total of 4 weeks in Florida, at different times for different purposes. That is one state that I wish to NEVER set foot in again. Sure, 70 degrees in January sounds appealing, but wait until it's August and it's 102 with 95% humidity and you have tree frogs in your sock drawer and scorpions in your bed sheets. Then you'll change your mind.

My most recent visit was October 07. When I walked out of the airport to get in the shuttle, I almost had a heart attack. The heat was so opressive it was like suffocation. I was traveling with 2 other people and we all dropped our bags and stared at each other and shrieked "What the ****?!?!!" I had sweat dripping off my head and my shirt was soaked before I even got in the shuttle. When we left WI, it was about 50 and I was wearing a coat. When I stepped out of that airport, it was about 99 with the same humidity. Unbelievable.

There were lizzards zooming all over the sidewalks and crawling over the toes of your sandals. We went out on the porch one night and there was a coral snake coiled up right outside the door. We stayed in a nice hotel and we were swimming in the pool when this "thing" swam past me. I don't know what in the freak it was - but it was like a big walking stick bug thingie. Oh my god I wanted to cry.

And have you, by chance, laid eyes on a palmetto bug?! I used to work at a company here in WI where we got regular shipments of parts from Florida. Every few shipments, the guys would find a palmetto bug in the crate. They'd tie a string around it's leg and attach it to a chair to provide the day's entertainment. One of my friend's craziest stories was he and his drunk buddy trying to kill a palmetto bug - it's almost impossible.

My aunt and uncle lived in the gulf side and I remember one particular visit when we were fishing in the canal and everybody started screaming to run - there's a aligator! We had to jump off the dock and run to our cars because the aligators were coming out of the water to sun themselves. My uncle's back yard was solidly fenced to keep the gators from stealing his dog - or his little kid.

I also lived in TN where the spiders and snakes were big enough and deadly enough to give you nightmares.

NO.THANK.YOU. Give me several feet of now ANY DAY over that crap! Of course I just heard on the news this morning that 2 guys froze to death when their cars got stuck in a ditch last week.

We have 4 seasons also - winter, more winter, road construction, and snow plowing season. But it's STILL not cold enough or snowy enough for me. I was in Alaska in June 06, and it was in the 50s and 60s with snow still melting. I thought - now THIS is my idea of summer! Moose, bears, and whales are FAR more appealing than palmetto bugs and spiders.

I use to live near Tampa, Fl and did like getting to see all those great shows in the winter. Now live in North Dakota where in the winter you wake up and it's -22 with a windchill factor of -37. Have more snow this year then in the last 7 yrs. My boss doesn't want her horses out in anything below 0 so they have not seen anything but the inside of a barn. We have no indoor arena so I have not ridden in awhile. I tried putting my horse out yesterday we were up to 12, but with the wind felt much colder (-14 with the wind chill). She wanted no part of that, this is her first winter up here. I got her from a girl on the East coast. I told my husband when we get our own farm built all I want is a indoor arena and a barn, heck with a house.

                                  oh, you made me homesick

That is the funniest post I've read in a looong while. Thanks Auventera, yep, doesn't sound like Fl is the place for you!

When I moved out of Fl, I missed all the lizards. I'll admit, I don't miss roaches but I really missed the treee frogs and lizards and afternoon thunderstorms.

I am so homesick for thunderstorms that I bought thunderstorm cds...

I remember when I was little, we'd go to other states and my eyes would get as big as dollars-this is GRASS? Its not springy! And THIS is a tree? And there's black dirt UNDER this grass?

I like Florida, probably because in all its flat, crowded glory it reminds me a lot of New Jersey. With bigger reptiles and fewer gun laws. I don't want to live there, but add me to the list of people who want to visit now that it's 19 degrees in the morning, and gets up to a blistering high of 32.

Originally posted by Auventera Two View Post

I kind of liked the lizards running around my hotel, but I admit the reptile aspect of Florida must have gotten to me more than I thought - I had snake/lizard nightmares for weeks after I got home.

I will admit though that walking out on a sandbar into the ocean and seeing a ray or a lemon shark not 3 feet from you, somehow just "connects you to the earth." Or seeing a dolphin leap into the air. Somehow you feel like you're on a different planet where there's no clocks and no jobs or shopping malls. It feels like time just stops. You're just "out there" with the ocean life and the water soothes your mind and soul. You can't get that kind of feeling from a river or a lake, not even from the Great Lakes. You have to be on the ocean to really feel physically connected to the greater world.

But - Alaska's on the ocean too! You might have to trade the dolphin for a beluga whale, and the stingray for a bald eagle, but I'm ok with that.

LOL!!!! I love your post, it's too true!

You forgot the sugar ants. We have sugar ants (that live in the palm trees) in (yes, IN the house) our house from June-November. You can't get rid of them, there isn't a bug spray, ant trap, poison, barrier, or exterminator that will keep them from invading my house. Every unsealed food container in my pantry gets put in freezer bags. There is no food left out at any time, including the cat food. Ugh - shudder!

The lizards provide much entertainment for my two cats - who love to hunt them! They also can get in the house no matter how tightly the doors and windows are shut.

We had Palmetto bugs in SC too, so those weren't new to us. But the lizards certainly were.
