Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

ok, I will look-wasn't sure, saw one line went up but have to admit I didn't look too hard either! Thanks---if it's true it's an extensor in the knee, then it would be responsible for picking that knee UP -ie in every movement, much less jumping, right? It doesn't sound great.

Have to ditto this. When things start not matching up, then you start worrying.
I vetted a horse, a TB actually, from someone who told me he was 6 and did this and that, etc. Turns out upon vetting & checking the tattoo that he was 10, stopped racing due to serious knee injury, etc. Suddenly she was willing to drop the price drastically.
I liked another horse when I tried it- a non-raced TB. Well the story changed between the first & third times I talked to the owner. I started checking around, contacting the show organizers and anyone else who may have had any contact. Their stories of him and her stories were two *completely* different things. I passed. I worried there was too much baggage, esp. the unknown, that I didn't want to get into from the very beginning with that horse.

So be very skeptical. I say this because you are in PA and for all I know you could be looking at the same horse. (I won't say where the PA gelding was located on a public BB, the owner was a shady gal. )

            • I just read the first few pages of this...GIVE HER A BREAK!! Every horse I've owned has been an OTTB...including one that was starved when I got him back (long story, he'd been on a free lease on the otherside of the country bc I was still on medium ponies and didn't need a horse yet...) Said starved horse was a SAINT. He was terrified of the vet...and didn't cross tie but you could put any kid on him and he'd do everything from walk-trot to 3'6" at the local shows (twisted his back end a smidgen over 3'3" so he wasnt going to win at the A shows in the juniors). I guess what I'm trying to say is not all horses are the same...some are the exception--even at a young age!!

I trust my trainer completely, and I'm sure there are other people out there that do too...if this girl trusts her trainer and the horse is right for her than give her a break and be supportive.

Let us know if the horse vets, and good luck with your riding!!

sigh. why don't you cut everyone else a break? I'm glad that you think that its awesome for Tiffany to go and buy the first horse she sees. Honestly I don't care that the horse is a TB. I wouldn't care if he was a purple pumpkin people eater for all the hell I care. I just know that horse shopping is FUN. Why miss out on it? I'm glad you think that I'm hassling her and i must of course be giving the girl nightmares showing these beautiful *which I would give anything to have one of them BTW* horses. I must be terrifying her by trying to tell her not to miss out.

I am a horrible person... *sniffle* may I please have a hug someone? Please?

Unless you are personally (and by that I mean standing in her barn with your DVM degree in your pocket) associated with any of these people I can't understand why you are beating this issue to death.

Sure, her story has inconsistencies, but that may very well be just a function of someone who, unlike all of you (said with dripping sarcasm), can't relate facts well in written form.

Why can't you armchair experts just wish her well and let it go?

Thank you Hitch I've stated I wish her all the luck in the world, but it doesn't hurt to show her some real cool horses. I had fun looking for them anyway I don't claim to be an armchair expert at all. Hell I don't claim to be a folding chair one I'm not second guessing anyone just talking to Tiffany as a friend. • Tiffany, since you aren't going to vet him until next week, why don't you see if you can go spend some time with Beanie, and maybe schedule another ride, in the meantime? Any reasonable seller, knowing that you are serious about buying the horse, should have no problem with this. I had the opportunity to spend time with and ride my new horse SEVERAL times before I handed over the check, so I felt really good about the purchase when it happened...I KNEW this was a fun, rideable horse for me, and loved spending time on the ground getting to know him. I pretty much knew the horse was right for me after just one ride, but I still would have been a bit uncomfortable handing over the check based on just one ride and limited contact (because I did that once before, and regretted it later).

                            I finally set up a photo album...take a look!

I test rode the horse for a long time and we spent well over 4 hrs there talking to the owner. My trainer has faith in me and thinks the horse is prefect for someone who wants to move up from ponies to horses. Im sorry to everyone now i feel like ya'll hate me. but i have to follow what my trainer says she is my godmom and has known me for a very long time.

                                • Tiff, nobody hates you. People are just trying to share their experiences to make sure you don't fall into some of the same traps we've fallen into ourselves. If you really trust your trainer, then nothing anyone else says matters in this, and you are doing the right thing. But we're just trying to help.

There are some things you've mentioned in this thread that people asked for more information about, and you never followed up on these requests. How do you think the people who asked these questions feel? It would be easy to think that you don't like US because you won't answer our questions. It's okay if you don't know the answers, just say so. But it works both ways in terms of having a conversation.

In any event, good luck with your horse purchase; I hope he's everything you're dreaming of!

                                  • Tiffany I don't hate you. Promise

I just wish you wouldn't be put into the position that I was a long time ago, and would hate to see you go through that.

No one wants to see you stop posting about the horse. I'm sorry that you can't see that even though some express it in different ways that everyone DOES care about what happens to you, some people are just a little more forward (yes I will even admit it Rude) about it.

Tiffany we all care, honest. And no one hates you. I swear on a stack of horse illustrated.

Tiffany also, I know that you love your godmom, she sounds like a great lady, but parents tend to get 'overzealous' sometimes. Try talking to her, asking if you can look around sometime. Since she's your godmom wouldn't she be willing to spend some time ago and even go horse shopping in your area for a while? Even if you are totally set on beanie, itd be fun and a nice day out, right?

Good luck Tiffany, and keep us updated. In the meantime, maybe try printing out some of the research that was given to you about beanie boy's injury, maybe even a couple of horses you deep down in your heart like on the internet but havn't really said anything. Godmoms love you. She wont get mad And theirs no hurt in a little research and a little looking into things right?

In any event, no matter what happens, if you do get him I hope he's the horse of your dreams. If not COTH will be right behind you.
