Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I'd just like to add...whatever horse you do end up getting. Please still post pictures! There have been some comments about judging from pictures, and I just wanted to say that some of us out here - or maybe just me - are absolute picture JUNKIES! I don't care who it is, what kinda horse, and how great you ride. I just love to see happy pictures of horsies and their humans. So when the big day is finally here..please share!

I think that we should all just keep our personal opinions to ourselves. Obviously Tiffany has already heard the same advice over and over again, and personally, I don't think she needs to keep hearing it, when she didn't ask for it in the first place! I just want to wish you luck, Tiffany, and I hope that Beanie (who sounds very nice btw), or whatever horse you get, works out!

Dont worry MSOP...I replied. Let me say, i have no problem with you posting topics like that on the public forum from now on, its everyone's business. I felt my post was just as malicious and appropriate as everyone elses, and you should know if it was directed at you. Sometimes it takes that much to get the point across and considering this topic consists of 3 1/2 pages of people preaching in an unecessarily rude tone to a kid, it was put in a tone i felt most would understand. Okay, I dogchushu (the ultimate in nervous novice riders), bought--as her first horse--a six year old TB.

And she's as quiet as quiet can be. A perfect, patient teacher horsie whose been the light of my life since I got her.

That being said, my trainer and I were more than a bit apprehensive about a TB of that age and whether she'd be as good for me long term as she was when I first rode her.

So, we made the horse prove that she was the wonderful girl we hoped she was.

I rode her maybe 5 separate times before deciding to pursue the purchase. we thoroughly vetted her for any drugs that could be keeping her quiet. We also took her on trial for a month. I know a lot of sellers won't do trials--but it seemed so odd that this horse was so dead quiet that we wouldn't get her without the trial period. During that trial period we hoped to see how she'd act in different environments when we were guaranteed no one would be lunging her or riding her down before I got on.

She stayed just as quiet and just as patient as I could have hoped. And her drug tests came out clean.

So there are dead quiet 6-year-old TBs out there. However, since they seem to be the exception rather than the rule, I'd say don't rule out purchasing this horse--but be careful to do your homework and make sure this horse is really the horse you think he is right now. If he's very underweight right now, be aware that he could be a totally different horse once he starts feeling better. And ride him a number of different times in different conditions (eg. try him on a chilly or windy day and outside--not just in a warm, friendly ring) to see all aspects of his personality. Make sure before you ride that no one has been on him before you or had a chance to lunge him into quietness.

Even having bought a wonderful-for-a-beginner 6-year-old TB, I would look for a lot of proof before assuming that another 6-year-old TB was appropriate for me.

He could be a wonderful horse for you and I hope he is. Just make sure you look at him carefully and critically before buying him. He could be another exception to the "young TBs are hot" rule--just do yourself a favor and make sure he proves that to you before you buy him.

                  Good luck to you!

A good story and a bad story. Bad one first!

At age 23, I got my own horse, a 6 y/o OTTB. Green, underweight, but cute and athletic and fairly quiet. Mind, at this time I had been riding for 15 years, ridden tough horses, bratty green ponies, loved a challenge. With this particular horse, I was lucky in that I was the one who rode him to show him to prospective buyers, so I got to know him quite well. Well, you probably know the rest of the story. He gained weight, got fit, and turned into more than I could handle, after 4 years I finally admitted it and sold him on.

The horse I bought to replace him was a green, 5 y/o...OTTB.
She has been an absolute joy, sweet, quiet, and very forgiving from day 1. Good thing, too! LOL

So, it CAN turn out OK. Especially if ( as it seems) the horse was never raced. My 1st one was on the track for 3 years. The second one, 3 races. Huge difference, mentally.

Anyways, hope it works out for you Tiffany! Good luck!

ps...he's related to my mare too, she has Exclusive Native on the top also. Yeah, I know, he's in a LOT of pedigrees, LOL.

****Indecision may or may not be my problem****

Good luck Tiff! I'd like to just make one suggestion if I may. After you vet the horse, ride it one more time before you make your final decision. If its good then you know its meant to be...if not, then it may save you some $$$. Fingers crossed that this is the horse for you.

Wow, I agree that you naysayers ought to be ashamed of yourselves. I recall getting a very similar nasty/judgemental reaction when *I* posted about buying my OTTB, with his minor soundness issues (OMG, is there no veterinary medicine these days?) AND without a vet check (dear God, I must be insane!). But what y'all are forgetting here is that imperfect, "flawed" horses do NOT always end up as lawn ornaments. Just because you've heard a hundred horror stories about a given scenario doesn't mean it never turns out differently.

And you know what? I am imperfect. I am flawed. But I do the best I can, and so does my horse. His best is good enough for me.

Tiffany, I will be hoping that you find the perfect horse, no matter what form he or she takes, and that you will know in your heart when you've found "the one."

Heart in a horse is every bit as important as it is in a person. ~Jimmy Cruise

Just wanted to say that our BEST schoolhorse is Native Dancer's grandson. He is such a good boy and has been a school horse from day one. He is very quiet and has taught so many kids their up-downs even though he was right off the track. Good luck! Don't let people get you down.

I, too recieved negative comments on the dressage board when I wanted to buy Sol. But actually everything the naysayers said was absoltly right: it wasn't the right time in my life to buy a horse. I was going to Japan. Who knows what will hapen when I'm there etc. They have absolutly good reasons for saying what they did and everyone else told me pretty much the same thing.

Although no one told me Sol wasn't an appropriate horse for me since they don't know my riding and my trainer put me on him in lessons which means he thought it was ok for me to ride Sol and Sol although being young is a very well behaved horse and he is also termed a "hot blood" because he is a Lusitano. However, I have ridden many other lusitanos at that age so that wasn't really the issue.

It was more of the face that he had OCD surgery (only preventitive) and what would I do with him when I went to Japan etc.

But they were right. And I knew they were right and I tried to listen to them and rationalize it to myself but I couldn't. I love him so much I just couldn't pass him up. I knew it would be difficult at first but I had the opertunity and I didn't want to pass it up.

I am really glad I bought him. I love him so much and my riding has improved over the short time I have owned him. Dressage has become so much fun because of him. I figured something out for him while I am in Japan. Although it is not ideal I think it's ok and he is not unhappy.

Just wanted to share my experience. I think other people are looking out for your well being, Tiffiny. It seems that you have gotten this message although some other posters havn't. But in the end it is your decision. It is good to keep in mind what the posters have said because I think they speak with truth and experience and a desire to help you, not to just preach at you. A starved horse is different than a fat and happy one. And I would be worried about the injury, too. But if you feel he is the one no one can stop you except your parents who i am guessing are paying for him? Anyway if they aren't then disregard that last statement.
