Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    What a pretty horse!

Lucky was purchased based on a picture on the old FL trainer listings and a ten-minute conversation with his trainer on the phone. Overnighted the money, managed to get a hauler, first time I ever saw him in person, let alone laid hands on him, was when I got on the shipper's trailer to unload him. Worked for me!

I picked mine out of a group in muddy barnyard on Christmas eve without even seeing her move. It will be 3 years in December and she is fun.

Thanks for the moral support, y'all. I admit I'd been expecting a barrage of rather more biting commentary in response to my confession of text-message horse trading; I have sorely underestimated the lunacy of my fellow COTHers.

I'll post a conformation shot later so you all can tell me in more detail what a fool I've been.

I was hoping someone would ask!

I was looking for a confidence builder to move my daughter from leadline to walk-trot. We had a group of friends we'd played cards with back in the 80s-90s that sort of grew apart as we all had our kids. One of the friends had moved west of us, but her daughter was going to attend college in our area, so we got a poker game together with the old group, and invited her to catch up.

She had married a vet and her daughter was showing the Buckskin circuit, but was going to sell her horse now that she was going to college. I remembered her daughter as a girl... she was very quiet and non-aggressive, so if this horse was showing the open show and doing everything with her, I assumed he had to be a saint. My friend kept saying, "He's so pretty!" and I told her I didn't care if he had one ear, as long as he kept my daughter safe. We agreed on a price that night.

I picked him up a few months later and he took my daughter from walk-trot to trail riding to English/Western Open shows to his current reincarnation as a dressage horse (at 24 years!). He's a saint in horse's clothing, and I can stick little kids on him and let them go, and he just jogs around the arena, smooth as can be, and those kids are in heaven!

I think I lost about $50 at poker that night, though.

See, if you had posted you were buying a horse you had looked at that had an iffy PPE, plus you had all this history, with 10 videos and 20 confo shots, *then* everyone would be all over your case and telling you no.

                    AWESOME mare!

Did close to the same in 2002. Saw this pic on a saleboard:

                    http://www.fieldofdreamsminihorses.com/Sunbody.jpg

Fell in love immediately. But he was 1200 miles away, in another country! But I emailed the lady anyway. She told me she could get him to Toronto for under $200. Ok, cool, I can get to Toronto from Pittsburgh easily. Wheels started turning.... she got all the paperwork done on her side to import him into the USA. She sent a video, it was cool but really didn't show much but a fuzzy pony bouncing through two foot snowdrifts....I sent a deposit.

Six weeks later, final payment made, transport is arranged. He'll come in on a sheep truck, and they'll meet me at the stockyards... Ok, that kinda squicks me out, but OK. Day before he's to arrive we drive up to Toronto, we're in contact with the trucker- who doesn't speak English well, I don't speak ANY French. I ask him to please call me an hour before he arrives, I don't want my guy stuck at a slaughter yard for any amount of time.

2AM- I get a call, he's off and in a pen. Um, OK, I'm on my way! We go up, I sign my papers, and pay the driver. He says, oh, just $100. Sure, dude, no prob! Grab my boy and go.

Oh, yeah, did I tell you? It was February. In Canada. The Falls were FROZEN.

Plus, my co-pilot ended up getting sick and had bronchitis. In that cold....ugh.

Head home in the morning, going through Customs is a whole 'nother story, but in the end I had a gorgeous new boy, showed him to a Hall of Fame in halter, a Res National Grand Champion in driving and he is very close to his HOF in driving. Still have the dude, too.

I used to flip TBs, and I got a text from my old partner in crime: "Hey. Got in a 16-ish hh 4 year old mare. Know anyone looking?" It was 9 o'clock at night and I was just leaving work. I got sent a terrible head shot but she was CHESTNUT. Chestnut TB mares are my weakness. "She's by Leroidesanimaux". Good TB bloodlines are my other weakness. I pulled over, called her and said "How much?"

Went home, discussed it with my parents (my money, but I still live with them [I'm only 23 so not a total slub] so they get a say). Told them I would flip her as an investment horse. Texted my trainer at midnight and said "You're leasing Lilly (my first chestnut TB mare) now and we're going to pick up my new horse tomorrow night." Trainer texted me back, "Okay." Good thing she is used to my shenanigans.

And that is how I bought a horse sight unseen in 3 hours via text message.

Mare came home extremely skinny, the worst bruising I've ever seen on all 4 feet, with an enormous paddle, a shoe boil and she couldn't trot without sounding like she was having an asthma attack.

A year a two months later she is Not For Sale (sorry parents, I did try!) and is one of the best horses I've ever sat on. I'm so excited to see how far she can go on the A circuit and then to hopefully breed her and produce amazing babies.

Here is her progress in photos, over the last year: https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...3e&oe=54776A0C

I can't wait to see more pics!

My OTTB was "purchased" sight unseen....before the internet was so common. Back in 1997, when I was 14 and had two ponies and ready to get a horse, my farrier kept telling me all these stories about this crazy TB his cousin/brother/some relative had. I wanted NOTHING to do w/ this horse, plus, I didn't like chestnuts. Well....one day he said he wanted to trade the TB for one of my ponies b/c they needed a kids horse and the TB was NOT a kids horse at all. He wanted my show pony so I declined...but the next time he came and mentioned it again, I offered my other pony (who was my first pony and a saint. I had outgrown her.) He agreed to that so we talked to my dad and next thing you know, my grandparents are hauling me and my fat little mare two hours to get this TB I've never seen and have only heard stories about how crazy he is. He was skin and bones and very underwhelming. The rest of their horses were all in good shape. These people had no idea what to do w/ a TB. So we took him home and left my pony with them (yes I got to check on her and see her again...she did great with them). So here we are 17 years later and it was the best decision ever. That horse that they called "Slim" was renamed Chance (since I was taking a huge chance on him!) and he is my heart horse. He's 24 years old and still my sweetheart.

I bought my second horse via email. Saw some pics and videos and we made a deal. I drove 11 hours to see him. Did a short ride, gave them a check, loaded up and headed home. He was only three when I got him and there were many times that I wanted to just sell him and get my money back....but he grew up after he turned 4 and I've had him 5 years now. Now I don't think he will ever go anywhere.

What a story, all is well that ends well.

I hope the OP is as pleased with her new girl a year later as you are.

I have bought plenty sight unseen, off pictures and some videos.
Some of those didn't look at all like the pictures, some the people didn't represented at all like I would have, not at all what they thought the horse was, or maybe fibbed.

Anyway, one horse was a strange case, supposed to be very quiet and polite, comes here and is mobbing for treats and walking all over short me.
First day and a half, I ignore him, don't give him any treats, thinking he will get over it.
Then he gets worse and I, almost run over this one time, turn around, walk towards him forcefully as I berate him in a low, but serious, grumbly voice, "that is e-n-o-u-g-h, quit pushing me a-r-o-u-n-d", turn around and proceed to walk on, leading him.

To my surprise, he follows nicely, completely quits pestering and/or ignoring me and becomes a completely different horse???

I give him then a treat, that he stretches his neck out for and picks up very politely off my hand.
We keep doing other stuff around the barn and he keeps being such a nice boy, he gets rewarded here and there when he waits for an invitation to take a treat and is polite about it, that is every single time.

I expected he would revert by next day, but he has been the same nice fellow since then.

If someone had told me that story, I would wonder about it, such a complete change just doesn't happen and so fast, but, well, it did happen to us.

My point with this story, do what you normally do around your new horse and let her get used to your ways, even if it may not quite seem at first those are her ways.
She looks like a smart horse, you too may be surprised how smart.

OP - what a lovely girl! Now we need details - breeding, what you're going to do with her, etc.... And more pics!

I bought one sight unseen too... Saw an ad for an Oldenburg colt for low 4 figures. Between the price and the gangly, fugly yearling picture I honestly don't know why I clicked on it... But I did, and he had a video which I really liked. There was something there and my gut said do it. So one phone call, several emails, and two weeks later the shipper showed up at my door from GA and there he was, refusing to get out of the van Two years later he has gone from ugly duckling to swan and whatever I saw on the video is really developing into something lovely... Plus he was an absolute dream to start, SO easy!

Here is his ad photo: https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...88359389_n.jpg

I bought my haflinger sight unseen a yr ago in March. E-mailed with the owner quite bit for a month or two, then she e-mailed & said I could have him for what was about half her original asking price or she was sending him to a trainer on consignment. So, I had to make my mind up by Tuesday (this was Friday). Called a hauler I've used & they were headed from CA to WA the next day. Slept on it, bought him - wired $. Haulers picked him up Saturday evening. In the middle of the night I realized not only had I not seen him in person or had him vetted - I hadn't even seen a picture of him under saddle, much less video. I almost had a panic attack.

Haulers loved him, threatened to keep him . So I knew he was at least nice. Got him home, had a trainer do his first ride & he was everything the lady said he was. Tracked down a previous onwer on FB & found out he had done everything I was told he had. Lady I bought him from was a little scared of him (he was pretty pushy). That was easily corrected & I have a perfect, short, fat little "pony".
