Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. How do you lose a SADDLE?!?! UPDATE - The lost has been found!

    UPS lost my dressage saddle on its way back from repairs. The tack shop DIDN'T INSURE IT and the owner of the shop had the gall to haggle with me how much she thought it was worth. She ended up giving me "store credit" on another used saddle. So $900 later I did get a better saddle, but it wasn't in my planned budget at the time.

    LESSON LEARNED: Get it in writing from the sender how much insurance is taken out on your saddle!!!

      I have had mostly good service with UPS. Correct box packing inside will make a huge difference as CJBean said. Use extra tape, to cover ALL the flaps and seams. Cover the WHOLE label with clear tape.

      Locally, we have several stores who will ship UPS for you. Drop off the package and they will give it to the driver for you. If you call UPS, they can have a driver stop and pick up packages the next day. THEN you have a tracking number which is available to keep the package found. It helps know where the package is if you call to ask with a slow delivery. All the bar code labels really do help tracking.

      UPS has it's hub in Chicago. If there is bad weather in Chicago, it may affect how deliveries are going out. Big snow was predicted, not sure what they got though. Still snowing here, so storm tail may still be hitting them, along with Lake effect making it even worse. GLAD I am not out delivering!

      We sent a certified letter with a certified check to a person for our NEW HORSE several states away! Owner called 5 days later, no letter, sounded doubting! Yick, now we were deadbeats! We called the Post Office for tracking, they couldn't find it. We called her back, sent the money by Western Union. She was happy with that, we were OK again. Had bank cancel the check, got our horse and all thought of missing letter went away.

      About a year and a half later we got a letter from the breeder, which happened because we were keeping her current on horse training. Opened the letter and found a message from her that the certified letter had been delivered just a couple days ago. She was returning the certified letter. The certified envelope had stamps on it that letter had been "Found in Empty Mailbag" with a recent date. We were rather shocked to get it. Real nice to have been proven honest, yet still really puzzling that they had lost letter in the first place. With tracking number, seems letter should have been checked off as bag was emptied, to verify arrival at the midpoint location.

The boxes with my grandmother's china looked like an elephant sat on them. Totally squashed and mangled, opened and retaped, totally terrifying. Nothing broke though, I assume since I declined to let the UPS store people pack it for me and packed it myself!

        Agree with whoever said post office's tracking system is terrible, a tack store shipped a saddle to the manufacturer for me, and gave me the usps tracking number when the saddle was late arriving. The post office never once updated the tracking number, even after the manufacturer called me to confirm that they had received the saddle.

          USPS insurance is a joke. I had a $200 eBay item (brand new in original box and securely packed in another box) shipped to me insured. It was damaged beyond belief (I opened it up right there at the small town post office in front of the postmaster). Filed a claim showing proof of value - my eBay printouts plus printouts from several stores selling that same item. The post office said they felt the item wasn't worth what I claimed and gave me $50.

          I prefer to ship UPS or FedEx but I can go directly to their main hubs in town here and avoid the markups of those shipping stores.

            I lost my future horse....kinda. My mare was at the vets to be bred, time was right, called the breeder, she collected and shipped via FedEx.

            Soooooo, the Equitainer never arrived. Seems they delivered my container to some dude in Philadelphia who was awaiting the arrival of his Rolex. Bet he was surprised

            He refused to give it up till he got got his watch. Sigh. I have NO idea what he did with the straws, but I hope enjoyed them

            Worked out ok in the end, but I was NOT a happy camper at the time.

              I have had mostly good luck with USPS but I can tell you - a few times I have won items on Ebay at *really good* prices and they have mysteriously been "lost" in the mail... sometimes even after tracking #s have been sent. I got refunds from the sellers who apologized profusely and bashed the PO.

              As it turned out, it wasn't the PO after all. After being tipped off by another Ebayer, I found out that in fact the sellers just decided they didn't get enough $$$ for their item ... so they never shipped it. If you do the shipping documentation online it will issue a tracking number - which is meaningless if you don't actually SHIP the item - but the tracking is never updated since the pkg never actually gets handed over to the PO. Seller then claims the item is lost. They are often happy to refund the money since they know they can resell the item later for a better price.

              And yes, I kept an eye on those sellers and after a few months, found the items that had supposedly been "lost" offered again for sale. Don't know if that is what happened to the OP here but just in case... here is your PSA.

Which if it was going from NY to CA that is a good 5-7 business days. Also keep in mind that days of transit are counted as business days, weeekends and Holidays don't fall in there.

                To avoid packages getting lost, please please package your items tightly in the box, fill the box with firm packaging material. This will lessen your risk of getting the box badly damaged during the shipping process where it could break open or get the label torn off. Keep in mind these boxes go through many many conveyors before they get to the recipient. They fall off the conveyors, sometimes get run over by forklifts etc. They also get stacked and could end up with a heavier box on top of it which then smashes your box if you don't use a firm packaging material.

                The nice thing with the major carriers is they have a lost and found dept, so they keep track of items if they fall out of their boxes, they can then get the description of what was lost and then see if they can locate it and re box it for you and get it on its way.

                Just thought I would give some suggestions to anyone who ships.

                Thanks for the packing tips! I have been doing a little FedExing myself this month and all advice is appreciated.

                  The PO lady told me this recently when I insured a taka turnout and rug I was sending to cowgirljenn. It got there, but if it had been lost, I'd have been unable to collect cause I bought it from an ebay store a couple of years ago, but I would have had ebay go thru my old records to find the items.

                  One menthod you can try if you are shipping older items like saddles is to go to a local tack store and get the owner to write out an estimate of value for you before you ship the saddle. Don't know if this will be accepted if you have a claim, but it is better than nothing.

                    Lucassb - not surprising, and something similar did happen to a friend of mine (it was a ladder). I do think that this seller is on the level, though. Same goes for the boots this spring that got lost (they actually made it to Atlanta and then disappeared from there). That said, would you mind PMing me the names of sellers to watch out for? Thanks.

                      About 4 years ago, I bought a used crosby saddle off of an Ebay seller. The saddle was shipped via UPS. The seller actually boxed it, labeled it and taped it up and then placed it in a bigger box that was stuffed with packing, labeled and taped up also. I thought that was really smart. If the outer box was damaged the inner box still had all of the info. and was ready to ship. Seller also taped the **** out of both boxes. Saddle arrived in great shape, so did the boxes. I do this now if I ship anything of significant value.

                        I reported the sellers both times to Ebay, forwarding all the correspondence about the "lost" items and then the auction #s of the re-listed items. Ebay booted them as a result (I got nasty grams via email from both sellers complaining later, LOL) thus the names wouldn't do anyone any good now.

                        Of course there is nothing to stop them from setting up new accounts, I suppose... but with the new feedback rules, it can be easier to spot. For items that have significant $$$, I make it a rule only to trade with a seller who has more or less perfect feedback. I understand if there is a problem and a buyer is perhaps unreasonable so I will look at both sides of the transaction if there is a negative, but more than one or two red flags mean I just don't bid.

                          Another shipping tip: put more than one address label on the box. Sometimes paperwork gets lost.

                          My husband uses UPS in his business and he says the only packages that have ever been lost are the ones where he didn't double label them.

                            To the poster who said UPS stores have a mark up.

                            I work for a UPS store. OUR prices are UPS' prices. As a UPS store we are not allowed to have surcharges. But if you go to a local place who offers UPS or a Stapples then yes you will pay a surcharge. And often times a hefty one! Not only are all UPS services (ground, 3rd day select, 2nd air, next day air) fully trackable, insurance above the complimentry $100 is affordable and sold in incruments of $100.

                                once a year I ship boxes to Albania, which is VERY strict with its requirments! I use marshmallows as packing materials! it has worked perfect, they are cheap and very light weight plus my nephews loves my "packing materials"!! and think I am the greatest aunt so thats a bonus too!

                                also, like someone else pointed out, don't have "air pockets" in you box, that is where the marshmallows comes in, tape ALL seams, edges and flaps of the box, and tape over the ENTIRE shipping label!

                                  Well there was the time my mailman's truck burned up... really. Luckily I wasn't expecting anything, but I can't imagine how they would figure out what all was lost. We got a letter the next day explaining what happened and apologizing for lost or damaged items.

                                    Unless they've recently changed their software, UPS Stores don't have a markup on shipping rates. They can and do charge more for insurance, but the shipping costs the same at the UPS Store as it does at a hub.

                                    ETA: Guess I should've read page 2 of replies before I posted. I see 2LeftHooves already addressed the UPS Store charges issue.

                                      These PO insurance stories are scaring me! I sold a very nice aged western saddle for a pretty hefty amount. Sent it to Canada, and it took forever to get there. Luckily it arrived in good condition- but I guess if it hadn't I probably would have been screwed?

                                        Bought a saddle for just under $1K. Paid via paypal. Package was insured. Seller was going out of town and would ship it on Saturday. So on next Tuesday or Wednesday I asked for the USPS tracking number. Wouldnt work. Hmm. Now Im doubting. On Thursday I started to get worried that it hadnt been shipped.

                                        Well it wasnt shipped till Wednesday.

                                        It got here, well packaged and undamaged. So yes sellers will lie and USPS numbers wont work. But I cant remember anything that Ive lost thru USPS, and I sell sometimes on ebay.

                                          Not always. There is a UPS store (not a Staples, only UPS) in my 'hood. I priced the costs for a few boxes, which seemed unusually high. I then drove to our UPS hub (a pain due to construction) and the cost was significantly cheaper. When I mentioned the other pricing to the guy behind the counter, he agreed that there is often a substantial markup.

                                          In any case - I use FedEx. Easier to get to. And since I often ship from a business (university) to a business (ie rescue) it is much cheaper than UPS. FedEx tacks on a fee for residential delivery.
