Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • LMH,

Of your list, my picks go Bullet Again, Winter News, StevieWonderful. I really don't have anything to say about Stevie at all, because that's such a bad, blurry picture.

No All Great? I LOFFED him.

    BnF and free,

Blush is to be my new event horse. Or dressage horse, if she doesn't like jumping I've ridden her twice--she's very uncomplicated; just green. She's quiet, but she has an *attitude*! My first ride, I spent time just being still, giving her support when she needed it...you know the drill. But the next time, I refused to hold up her head--which she did NOT like. So she nodded it, looking for contact, for the first 15 mins or so. Then she relaxed and settled, and we had a nice ride. I think that's going to be typical of her. She's fun--I couldn't be happier with her

    • I like Winter News. Why? In my totally unprofessional opinion, because in addition to having a stunning conformation, he looks totally relaxed. He's just hanging around, getting his picture taken. He looks like a kind soul.

      • Simke, your girls ARE lovely! I think Blush wants to be a hunter! I'm sorry about Yaya. Whats wrong with her? I got my Canter guy because I had to retire my last young horse. He's baarely pasture sound and is out with 2, 20 something yr olds. He's 9 now.
I was looking for a mare when I bought Rave. Sometimes we just can't help ourselves.
I really wish I could afford another horse. My husband says go for the investment, I know better, I fall in love. I bought Rave thinking I was going to do a little "Horse-trading". Now I can't imagine ever selling him. My trainer would kill me if I did, he's her green horse. Oh well, I'll see what I hear about Leo. I have 2 friends that will invest with me. Oh dear, this could be more work for me.

LMH, I don't like Winter very much. He looks like a sweet enough horse, but not my kind of horse.
I love Bullet, and I'd wait for him..pending vet approval.
I don't like high withered horses. And he's built too uphill for me. He's a beautiful horse and would do well in a lot of places, but I think he'll just be another horse in the show ring.
I look for fancy enough to be in the big shows. They have to have that look. I wish I could put up a conformation picture of Rave, before and after.
You asked for a Devils advocate before so here goes.....My concern with Bullet is that he looks so mature and hunterish. He should look like a race horse, but he doesn't. I know he's a 4 yr old, but he's a very mature 4 yr old. What I like about Leo, is he looks like a 4yr old racehorse that's hunter prone. He looks more immature, which would allow me to develope him the way I want him. Does that make sense? My trainer and I talk about counterfits. Horses that look great and just aren't anything. Just make sure the vet or someone from here takes a peak and watches them walk at least. The beautiful counterfits my trainer has bought, sold fast and easy...no profit, but good homes (I can't stress enough that countefits and ALL horses are wonderful and do deserve to be in good homes and be loved and do have jobs and are good at them) and she moved on to the next. That is why I would buy horses with pretty heads. Not everyone wants a show horse. Bullet is pretty enough that if he's a counterfit he'll sell well, and if not, he has the look for the big ring!
I got very lucky with my boy. My trainer says, yes, she'd clone him in a heart beat! Laugh, it's a joke!

        • Oh I'm sorry, I should of said Stevie(?) is too high withered for me and built uphill, as I read it it looks like I'm still talking about Bullet. My brain goes faster than my fingers.

          • For what it is worth- I really like Winter News. He seems to have the kindest eye and I am a huge sucker for that. I also love a red head. It's so hard to tell a lot from the pictures. They all seem pretty nice. I am sure you will be happy with which ever one you choose.

              • inmotion,

Ya-ya started 17 time on 2 bone chips in her left fetlock. She doesn't have much cartilage left She also had two chips in the right fetlock. They were all removed in July. She actually looks pretty sound now--you can *barely* see a hint of something not quite right, but I'm trying not to get tooo excited. I know the minute I think she's sound she'll go dead lame again!

About Winter News--does it bother anyone else that his lips are mottled? I wonder if he could have that copper deficiency disease. LMH, if you go with him, ask the vet about that, okay?

THanks for the tip Simkie-the main reason I left Winter News on is he is with the same trainer as Bullet...so he is riding on Bullet's coattails.

I added All Great to the final list-I do like him however I am curious if anyone else feels he has a curb on that left rear?

                    • YAY, I'm glad to see All Great on the list--he's my pick! I really don't think he has anything on the rear. If he does have a curb, it's probably from scrambling in the trailer or something. My gelding had totally curby hocks (and I mean CURBY) and it was NBD.

Have you called All Great's trainer? I wanna hear about him!

                      • I like horses that are level. I like a good strong back without high withers or peaked hind ends. My horse is 4 and I bought him as a 3 yr old. All my babies go hind end up first then level up. Hunters (as I see them) are built level or slightly downhill. We want a horse that drops his head and jerks its knees. The uphill horses are desired jumpers, not necessarily good hunters. The neck set is everything over fences in a good hunter...and it starts with the hind end, back, withers/shoulders, and neck. I've only had 4 horses...my old girl who taught me everything..including you can win without talent under you, Maestro, my poor crippled boy Indy and Rave. I'm an amatuer, an older, I found and started Maestro...who under Scott Stewart became one of the top conformation hunters in the mid 90's...and my Rave is nicer than Maestro with the same amazing jump. I found horses for friends that have gone on to titles in the hunter world. I don't usually see many horses that I really like, there is a huge list of reasons, and looking at pictures is a slim start. They need to have good temperments, be sound, be hunter athletic. This is why buying horses is terrifying and exciting. The old "what have I done now!" My trainer says all the time, how she didn't like Maestro when I got him, and she thought Rave was ugly! She asks all the time, did I know he was going to be so beautiful? Yeah, I did. She calls him her swan....the ugly duckling thing! I don't know the formula, but I just start with seeing something in the eye. Quiet intelligence to defiance. Almost like being the lord and overlooking all us pions. Rave knows he's spectacular. He loves being in the ring, alone and he wows everyone. He is a true show horse. That is what I like to start with, presence. Horses like Bullet have that presence. People need horses to be diferent things for them. I jsut want a horse to be the best they are built to be. I don't like seeing people making horses things they aren't. Rave will never be a jumper...but he has the scope to be a working hunter, he's just too stylish to go fast. That's why I talk about all horses having jobs. The job I look for is to be a show hunter....potential for going all the way. I am anally fussy. It took 8 months to find Rave, and I looked eveerywhere with a 10,000 budget. That's why I said in the beginning, don't impulse buy. We can pick this up in the spring or continue all winter. I'll call about Leo, but he'll have to be everything for me to involve my friends with a purchase. I would pursue Bullet, as I said he's pretty enough that if he doesn't work for you, you'll be starting him right and can pass him into a good home.

                          • FWIW, I like #3 and #4 the best. The overall package is more balanced and athletic.

Something bothers me about #1's hind end. It could be the way he's standing, but he looks long in the gaskin and weak behind. #2 looks like he may be a bit light of bone (leg-wise) for his big body, but the poultice makes it hard to tell. He seems to have a "loaded" (heavy) shoulder at any rate.

Despite #4's apparent curb and rather long back, he has a balanced, athletic, intelligent look to him...and his front legs appear very clean.

#3 also seems to have a lot of class.

Still, you can only tell so much from a photo. I'd go see them all!

Who do YOU like the best?

When I was thinking about buying Blush, I had a window open with her picture on my computer ALL the time. I just loved looking at her. Even now, I have one of her pictures as my desktop. I just think she's lovely and can't get enough of her.

For me, All Great has that quality. I *really* like him, and if I were in the market for a gelding, I would snap him up.

Who has that kind of "wow" factor for you?

                                • I don't like the last one (from Michigan). His back is too long and he has a common head. Heis camped out behind and his hocks are too high off the ground-I think that makes it hard for them to reach up under themselves. Nice angles in front though!
