Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    LMH,

Oh yes. They look icky to me. Look how there's not a smooth line along the front of his leg--his fetlocks bulge out there. And it's not just a LITTLE bit. I could forgive fetlocks like that, maybe, in something that had a lot of starts. But he hasn't! I would really, seriously, pass on him.

Compare his legs to Lurch's. Lurch HAS started. See how much cleaner he looks?

Free, I think you should buy the Springhar mare. I just bought Blush, I'm not due for another CANTER horse until next year Oh, and WHAT is the url for the Name Database?! I switched computers and don't have it on this one...cry!

As a proud new member of the "owned by a CANTER cutie clique" I can honestly say ... if any horse gives me the same kinda vibes that my dear sweet Topper gave me just by looking at a picture on a computer, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

A sweeter, kinder, gentler 3-year-old I have never known. And besides that, his first time just playing at free-jumping, he got so into it that he kept cantering around jumping the little oxer even while we were trying to take it down!!

I worked with Shane Spiess. I would do so again (though I'd likely subtract an inch or two from the horse's height ) or with Phil Hartman, a genuinely nice man who hauled Topper from Michigan to Arizona for me.

And for what it's worth, I really like the looks of Lurch, too.

      Good luck to everyone!!

      ***** I muck, therefore I am. *****
Congratulate me! My CANTER cutie is an honor student at Goofball University!

Question about Bullet Again-is there anything in his hind end that bothers anyone?

I know he is a crowd favorite-so now I am getting pickier and asking more detailed questions

Goodness knows someone has to maintain a level head!

And Simkie since you pulled Lurch back up-is there anything we DON'T like about him? Other than the fact the ad says "Seller Busy" and I am afraid to call!

LMH, Bullet Again appears to be a TAD straight through the hock. But not too much. I still loff him.

I like Lurch quite a bit. If I'm going to be nit-picky, I think his neck is set on a little low, and is a little short. I really think that with some long and low work, his neck will lengthen and he won't look so upside down. I think you should call on him!

Here are new pics of Bon Feu. I took these today. He has not been at the track for a few weeks now. He is on the farm he was foaled at in Navasota, approx. 45 minutes NW of Houston. The colt is almost 16.2H. He was good natured and kind even on a windy, blustery day. The farm manager told me that an intern from Texas A & M has been riding the colt W-T-C at the farm and that he has been very good natured with no bad behavior. He has been sound for the riding. Although he was diagnosed at the track (via scope) with stress induced pharyngeal (sp?) issues (the flapper issue), the manager and farm owner both told me that they have not heard any noise after the colt has been cantered by the intern at the farm on repeated occasions. The intern was cantering, though, not breezing the horse.

Also, despite being surrounded by mares (it's a breeding farm), this colt did not appear to have any stallion behavior and was oblivious to the mares around him. He remained quiet and focused on his handler.

Although I have no personal stake in the colt, I own his mother and have purchased several horses over the years from this owner. Each time the horse was very fairly represented to me. This owner takes excellent care of his horses and is a very conscientious race owner, as evidenced by the fact that, as soon as a potential problem was identified, this colt was retired from training. He never started. The owner is an older gentleman who is dispersing his horses due to health reasons, and the fact that no other family members are interested in the horses. He has owned most of his mares for years and raced almost exclusively homebreds. I was at the farm today taking pictures of his horses in preparation for a gradual dispersal.

As far as his legs looking "icky" in the pictures, they looked normal enough to me when I inspected them in person today. That said, I'm not a vet and it's also hard to pass judgement based on one picture. As far as the owner and farm owner are aware, the colt is sound. I saw nothing about the legs to make me specifically question soundness, but , as always, a vet check is prudent.

The best phone number for more information about the colt (now that he's at the farm) is Sue O' Hara at (936) 825-6984. She has known the colt his entire life and foaled him out.

I have the perfect solution: buy four or five horses and then loan them out to BB'ers! (Not helpful, huh?)

I liked Lurch, and Bullet Again. What about Winter News? I also really liked the looks of Royal American. Was there something about him you didn't like? (Just curious, maybe I missed something).

I still like Starlight Marquis from the Northeast site: Starlight Marquis
(Also probably not helpful). Sorry, I just want to be saved from myself.

                      Happy shopping!

                          I could EASILY do 15.3!!!!

OK, I'd call about Leo, then call the Canter folks at the tracks of the horses you like and get vet references.....get the vets out for checks..either simple or with x-rays(what ever you're comfortable with)....AND assessments of temperments, size and movement. Most(all) vets know what we hunters are looking for. We can improve movement but we need something decent to work with. The ones we (note I said we!)like do tend to get sold.
I still say Bullet and check Leo (he's not as developed but still very nice). Check that thing Simke was talking about on him.

Thanks, I was surprised at how pretty he was when I saw him. CANTER didn't have pictures of him up on their website so I went to see him on a friend's recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. Most TBs that I've been around have rougher heads, and his looks almost part Arabian to me.

I don't know a lot about TB bloodlines, but he's Nasrullah twice, which I keep hearing is good, plus Mr. Prospector, Native Dancer twice, and Bold Ruler. His JC name is Primer Coat.

I've been very happy with him. The picture I posted was taken several months ago, and he's coming along well. I'm not quite sure yet what I'm going to do with him, but he's a lot of fun.

                                  Hey LMH,

Of COURSE you know this, because you've bought CANTER before

but those heights they say are sorta fictional. For example:

                                  Ya-ya was listed at 16! She's 15.2!!

Blush was listed at 15.3...and she's 16 and change.

So, yeah, take the height listing with a grain of salt

To the best of my knowledge, Keely at CANTER Illinois (the Fairmont horses) sticks the horses and the heights are accurate. I have never seen one height wise that wasn't as presented.
